I removed the shingles and prep the roof ready to install. They came 30mins late which is perfectly fine with me, given that they had to drive from oregoncity to portland. Their special is awsome $30 per square to install, which includes shingles, felt and flashing. The first thing I noticed was that he installed the flashing incorrectly. He tried to install flashing over the felt on the eave, which I caught on time and told him to install it under.... it was a very common mistakes among roofers, even when one claims that they have done it for 20years (just because they did it for 20yrs+ doesn't mean they do it right). He then install the rake edge flashing under the felt, which is also wrong.... it should be over. Again a common mistake among roofers. He explained that the felt paper is nothing but vapor barrier and it doesn't protect the roof from water. That is incorrected; the felt paper is the second insurance incase of the shingles failed. If done incorrectly you will not immediately see the result until years later when one or two of your shingles start failing. I have to give him credit for installing the roof fairly straight and fast, but I noticed that there are a lot of times he has overdriven nails which counter sink into the shingles and spent no time caulking it because he wants to finish the job quickly. Prior to his arrival I installed the house wrap along the wall and left the lower 8 inches of the house wrap not stapled so that he could slide the step flashing under. Instead he installed them out side of the wrap, which later I have to fix by cutting the wrap and slide another house wrap under and over the step flashing. It's an easy fix but again he completely clueless on how to properly flash anything. I gave him a kickout flashing to install prior to installing the step flashing and he chose not to install it. I talked to him about it and he told me that it was not necessary. (EVERY TIME YOU HAVE SHINGLES NEXT TO A WALL, YOU NEED A KICKOUT FLASHING PER CODE, TO DIRECT THE FLOW AWAY FROM THE WALL TOWARDS THE GUTTER FOR PROPER DRAINAGE). To summary, his price is extrmely good but he doesn't know how to properly flash anything. I have to micro-managing everything. I recommend that you install all flashings and tar pappers yourself and then hire him just to put on the shingles so that you could save time and sweat installing shingles under the sun. He seems to rush, proved himself ignorant and incompetent in the basic knowledge of flashing and drainage. Should I hire him again? sure provided that I have to do all the prep work and have him ONLY installing the shingles.
Description of Work: Saw his ads on craigslist for summer roofing special. Gave him a call to schedule appointment to put up shingles on the roof.
