Supposedly our Torque Converter went out. It was middle of the summer, and mechanics were on vacation, we were headed out on vacation . . . we decided to let the small local shop do the repairs and they GOOFED. They installed the wrong size Torque Converter (2 wheel instead of 4 wheel), ended up keeping the vehicle over the weekend because they couldn't figure out how to get the transmission back in the car. They ended up forgetting two bolts that the dealership replaced on the next oil change.
And then a week later, the transmission started going funky again. We ended up with a rental car to go to grandparents.
'Come to find out . . . the small shop forgot to install the O'ring. There was gunk flowing back and forth, damaged our new Torgue converter and we had this incredible shutter between 37-42 mph. The "shop" suggested it was the transmission and we needed to replace the whole thing.
The dealership laughed. Honda CRV's don't need transmission replacements at 125k. They referred us to Larry Morton's Transmission and Larry himself drove the car, had us in within the week and fixed the problem. The poor workmanship ended up causing us to get the whole system flushed, second Torque Converter, and repair to the damage . . . but the car has had no transmission issues since.
Larry gave us an estimate of time. Met it perfectly. He gave us an idea of what the issue was, called and kept us informed, saved all the parts. Larry stuck to the price estimate. And all the bolts, o-rings, and transmission were back in the car the first time around. When you walk into Larry's show, he has the parts to do the job. He does transmissions . . . not tires, not brakes, not oil changes . . . just transmissions. He's been around for awhile, we found out from neighbors. Well respected by neighbors who do their own repairs as well as us non-mechanical folk.
Wish we had gone to Larry the first time around, he might have known what the real problem was . . . and probably not the torque converter. Wished we had gone to the dealership rather than supporting the little shop around the corner. It would have saved us time, money, and tylenol.
Bad. I had to have the clutch replace after less than 20,000 miles which is way less than the other service company said a clutch should last. I cost me an additional $699.00 I believe Larry used the cheapest clutch available.
When I had the work done and complained about the cost Larry had a bad attitude. I asked about a used clutch and he said good luck finding one. It's a Honda the # 1 selling brand that year.
