We had intended to use a water-based finish but based on the recommendation of Steve the owner we went with the chemical-based Glitsa varnish. Two coats are normal but Steve said we could go with 3 coats for a more durable finish. We decided on the extra coat. We were told that we would have to be out of the house for 3 days to clear the chemical smell, but then Steve called to tell us we should wait another day. This was the last week of Oct. Steve made other promises and didn't follow through. When we returned to the house the smell was overwhelming and we had to stay away another night. After paying for 2 nights in a hotel we decided to go home and tough it out. The smell was completely nauseating so we had every window open during the night with the heat pump running to keep up the temperature required for hardening. Steve called to deliver the invoice and we complained about the smell. He then told us it could BE A MONTH before we would no longer smell fumes. He was right, it took at least a month until we would open a closet (all previously emptied) or some other area and not have a chemical smell. The other big surprise was that because they screwed up the 3rd coat, we ended up with 4 coats, which is beyond the supplier recommendation. Next surprise--for 6 weeks or so the floor had a loud cracking sound at night as the floor cooled (it is insulated below) opening up cracks between the boards! We never had those crack before with the original polyurethane finish. Bottom line, we are very unhappy!
