Called about a month early to determine if company did duct work. I was told 'yes' they do this type of work and would charge $85/hour plus parts. They could come look at the job site and give an estimate, but they would charge $85/hour to do so..that they would take off the final invoice if I hired them. They gave a rough time estimate to do the work I described, which seemed reasonable to me. They said to call them a few days in advance to do schedule the job. Which I did. It turned out they were able to do the work a day earlier than scheduled which was great. The worker arrived when he said he would. Assessed the job and then left to get the parts. He was polite and friendly. The work was completed within a few hours. The surprise came when he said, "Are you aware of the $150 set-up fee?" No, I'm not. There wasn't a receipt for the cost of the parts either... which they charged $100 (plus I was paying $85/hour while he was getting them).

My wife got me on the phone and I challenged the prices. Svc. rep. said pricing was out of his hands. I declined any service from Generation, but paid the $99 service call. I called Dons Air Care and they diagnosed and repaired for $80 including the service call!! Avoid Generation Heating & Cooling -- they try to rip you off.

"THIS CUSTOMER HAD A 20 YEAR OLD FURNACE. UNFORTUNATELY THE GAS VALVE ON THIS UNIT WAS, AND STILL IS FAILING. AS ALL OF PORTLAND METRO AREA KNOWS, GENERATION IS A 24 HR SERVICE COMPANY. WITH GREAT REFERRALS. IT WAS A VERY COLD DAY AND OUR SERVICE TECH SHOWED UP, DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM, AND OFFERED TO FIX IT OR REPLACE IT BASED ON THE EQUIPMENT AGE AND CONDITION. GENERATION CALLED THE COMPANY THAT WAS ALLOWED TO PERFORM THE WORK ON THIS FURNACE DUE TO THIS AD, AND HE TOLD US THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT THEY WOULD CHANGE A GAS VALVE OUT FOR 80 DOLLARS AS THE CUSTOMER DESCRIBED. THIS CUSTOMER IS UNFORTUNATELY SHORT ON SOMETHING? SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD. LOOKED AT FURNACE ON SUNDAY. DETERMINED THAT FAN MOTOR NEEDED REPLACING. URGED US TO GET A NEW FURNACE RATHER THAN FIX IT. CAME BACK ON MONDAY WITH NEW FAN MOTOR. FOUND THAT MOTOR WAS NOT PROBLEM. DETERMINED THAT CONTROL BOARD WAS PROBLEM. SAID BOARD WAS ABOUT $700, AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS TO GET IT IN FROM THE MANUFACTURER. AGAIN URGED US TO GET A NEW FURNACE RATHER THAN FIX IT. I FOUND THE CONTROL BOARD FOR THE FURNACE (RHEEM) ON THE INTERNET FOR $298 AND AVAILABLE IN 2 DAYS. WE HAD A 2ND HEATING AND AC COMPANY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THEY IDENTIFIED THE CONTROL BOARD AS THE PROBLEM, AND A BROKEN CASING HOUSING THE INDUCED DRAFT MOTOR. GENERATION HEATING & COOLING GAVE US AN INCORRECT/INCOMPLETE DIAGNOSIS AFTER 2 TRIES. THEY ALSO GAVE US BAD INFO WITH REGARD TO THE COST OF REPAIR, AND THE TIME TO GET REPLACEMENT PART. THIS WENT ALONG WITH CONTINUAL URGING TO BUY A NEW FURNACE FROM THEM.

OVERALL, A GOOD EXPERIENCE. THE ESTIMATE WAS COMPETITIVE. THE CREW SHOWED UP WHEN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO, COMMUNICATED WELL, AND CLEANED UP AFTER THEMSELVES. THEY QUICKLY RESOLVED A PROBLEM WITH FURNACE SETTINGS THAT CAME UP IN THE FIRST WEEK.

A GREAT COMPANY, THEY WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SURE WE WERE TAKEN CARE OF. THE SERVICE TECH SEEMED TO HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS THAT WERE UNAVOIDABLE, BUT YET, THEY STUCK IT OUT AND FINISHED THE JOB, AND DID A GREAT JOB MAKING SURE EVERYTHING WAS DONE CORRECTLY. VERY IMPRESSIVE, I WOULD RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IN THE OFFICE, THEY ALSO WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SURE WE WERE HAPPY. THANK YOU.
