Oil Can Henry's

These guys are great -- cheerful and quick. I am glad to have them in town.

These folks work in efficient teams of two and are polite and professional. You stay in your car while they work, and they give you a local paper to read while you wait. They offer several types of oil and levels of service. It is a good place to go to get your car servicing done quickly and conveniently.
I believe the pricing for the basic services is fairly competitive, especially when compared to services provided by similar types of companies. My main problem going places like Oil Can Henry's is the constant upselling pressure. It is not done in an unfriendly manner, but it is relentless. I do not enjoy the experience of being pushed to buy something new every 3 minutes while I am waiting for the work to be done, sitting in my car, as a captive audience. The "free" extra services they provide to check things such as the battery's charge are all designed, of course, to find new things to sell you and new problems to solve for you--all of which are overpriced, in my opinion. The service and fluid-replacement schedules they push are extremely conservative, from what I can tell from talking with mechanics. The prices they charge for any extra items such as battery replacement or transmission flushing seem very high. I think this is standard in the "chain" oil-changing industry, but Oil Can Henry's has turned it all into a pretty slick science....
On the last trip I made to Oil Can Henry's, they offered to test my battery charge as a new free service, and then told me I needed a new battery and told me the price for installation. I appreciated knowing that my battery was getting old and weak. Having them install it then would have been very convenient, and I was tempted to go ahead and pay what I knew was a large premium for that convenience--again feeling like a captive audience. I chose instead to drive a block up the street and saved about $40 having a new battery installed at a shop that is not known for being inexpensive.
I like Oil Can Harry's and the folks who run it. They have an impressive system for checking and servicing cars. I do not, however, enjoy being uncomfortable and pressured through the entire process there. I am able to say "no thanks" when I choose to do so, but I don't enjoy going through that process. Since that last visit, I have chosen to take my car to my main mechanic for this type of routine servicing. It is not quite as convenient, but it is typically cheaper and I trust his service recommendations.
