Took my 2002 Dodge Dakota to Dans Auto Center in Lake Oswego because I had a check engine light on, which ended up being a bad O2 sensor. Ended up needing a new catalytic converter as well. When I drove away, I noticed a bad tapping noise coming from left side of engine. This noise was not there when I took the truck to the shop initially. I called to see if maybe someone forgot something while putting together and to otherwise diagnose problem. Thomas told me the truck was fine and to just keep driving it and the noise should go away. This didn't settle with me, so I took it to a Dodge Dealer and they repaired what ended up causing the noise, which was a warped exhaust manifold and two cracked bolts. Had this replaced, and the truck sounds great. Talked to one of the owners, Jennifer, and asked what could be done. They denied causing my exhaust problem even though it did not have this problem when I brought them the truck. They won't help me pay for this damage to my truck which I believe they caused. I do not recommend this shop to anyone.

After explaining in full detail what problems there were, they ignored the car for the day. The next day, they called saying I needed at least a thousand dollars in repairs. They said I needed to replace items which had been replaced recently! They said that their computer reader showed a certain code which I knew were false. I immediately drove there and demanded to be shown the code. As they hooked up the reader, the code they mentioned was not there! Besides ignoring the complete information I provided to the man writing them into the computer the day before, they exaggerated and created more problems than existed, and didn't even discuss the reason I bought the car in for the first place! People can be so deceived by such a money generator. I askes for my keys and took the car home right then. Later, the repair costs from another REAL mechanic were less than a few hundred dollars!

"Hello Mr. [Member Name Removed], You brought your Honda Accord in for service 25 months ago for a check engine light diagnosis, oil smoke from the engine/tailpipe, and a check over of the vehicle. We did multiple tests on the vtec system, the solenoid was intermittently going inoperative, which takes multiple test drives and scans, servicing the vanos would not have cured the problem. The code was absent when you came to pick up the vehicle because it is routine procedure to reset the Main ECU and retest the system for an actual correct diagnosis . Our scan and diagnostic computer is a $20,000 state of the art diagnostic tool. We can actually track and test each system component while the vehicle is running. Wont get that with the typical auto parts guy with a $50 code reader. The smoke coming from your vehicle was actually from engine oil and coolant dripping onto the exhaust system. Radiator seam was leaking and front engine oil seals and the valve cover gasket, all very common with this particular honda engine at that mileage. your engine at that time had 132,865 miles. Everyone here at Dan's is very honest and professional. If they weren't, they would not be employed here. We were very up front and honest about what your vehicle needed at the time. What can and can't wait. Bottom line is we spent 2 hours checking over your vehicle and charged you nothing. It would be nice to know why you wrote this review 2 years later. Thanks to all the other Angie's list members who continue to refer their friends and family to Dan's Auto Center Ethan Micich-Owner"

Their folks are very highly skilled. I have been taking both of our cars there for almost the entire time. The quality of work is very, very high. They are in touch on the price we side but I never have that I need work done that they recommended. Last service was back in the summer. I have some major seals replaced on the truck. The approximate cost of service was $1600.

A week prior to my arriving at Dan's Auto Center, I had my car in a transmission shop to diagnose a strange noise coming from the transmission. They thought it was the flex plate, maybe having a loose bolt or two attaching it to the Torque converter. They determined the flex plate was breaking apart and needed to be replaced. i agreed to their price and they supposedly repaired the problem. During the installation, I was called and told my steering was going bad and might need to be replaced for about $1600.00 and that the oil pan gasket was leaking and could be replaced for about $60.00. After he gave me a firm price to fix those items, i told him that was too much to pay and to just replace the flex plate. When I drove to work the next day I noticed a grinding noise (metal to metal) which didn't sound good. The transmission shop could not find the cause of the noise.
I found Dan's Auto Center on Angie's List and called for an appointment for an inspection. They had an opening the next morning. I told the service writer what i wanted, and what I had been told was wrong with my car. Their mechanic t it for a test drive and he found the problem. The steering was fine and yes, the oil pan leaked and the metal to metal noise was coming from the backing plate that had been bent and was rubbing against the brake rotor. He straightened the backing plate. The service was great, they got me in quickly and the price was very reasonable. I plan to use them for my auto service in the future and will recommend them to friends. Thank you.

I’ve been using Dan’s Auto Center for some time for maintenance on our 1992 Chrysler Town and Country van. I’d been to dealers for years after the warranty was out with very unsatisfactory results. One particular ongoing problem involved our power steering. It was sticking and emitting a loud groan when initiating any turns – it was especially bad in cold weather and unsettled my wife (who is the primary driver of this vehicle). This would be an on and off thing for years, going to the dealership and having no resolution. I finally gave up. After many more years/miles and many more repair disappointments, we decided to find another shop. After hearing friends talk about Dan’s and reading reviews here, I took the car for repairs. I was pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail and the courteous and honest approach. When I took the car in for service the second time, I finally broached the subject of the power steering, thinking it was worth a try. They repaired it and all was well for a month or so and then the symptoms began reappearing (which was actually better than other dealer attempts where the sticking and noise literally returned the day after I got the car back). After having spent years trying to resolve this, I just figured it was the nature of the beast and let it go – it was better but still an irritant. Fast forward at least 8 or 9 months…I needed some more service, and while making the appointment, I mentioned that the power steering issue had reappeared and while originally better, was now getting worse again. I fully expected (and would have understood) that waiting that long before saying anything about the initial repair would negate any back claim. Without any argument whatsoever, Chris (I believe) immediately said he would take a look at it and see if he could figure it out. I was called back later that day and informed that they were doing more research and needed the car another day. Chris called the next day and said that after researching the original Chrysler repair bulletin on that issue (which was the basis for the original repair) Chris was able to find quite a deep Chrysler repair history on the power steering for that model and as a result found 2 or 3 more bulletins that outlined a series of additional fixes. I was then informed that all the repairs had been completed, and since they had missed the additional bulletins, all parts and labor were covered under their warranty (several hundred dollars!) I was stunned. I’ve been the CEO of a public company for many years and was proud of the many national customer service awards we had won and always tried to ensure that our service was as legendary as the stories we heard about Nordstrom’s. It was absolutely refreshing to find someone who practiced what they preached! Incidentally, it’s been summer and winter now and the power steering has never performed better! I’ve read some other less flattering reviews from those who no doubt feel their grievances are valid…and they might be. However, I have to say that my own experience has been consistently great. I like the fact that I can talk to the mechanic if I need to and don’t have to wade through a bureaucratic nightmare to get past the “service manager”. I like the fact that a mechanic has gone out with me on a 20 minute drive to try and isolate a particularly difficult-to-trace noise. I like the fact I don’t have to go back repeatedly to have work redone (and when I did, in this example, it was an incredible experience!) I sincerely recommend giving them a try!

The electrical works fine now, but when I came to pay the bill the mechanic also told me I needed new brake pads as they were at 10% on the front and 20% on the back. Because I was skeptical, I took it to the good folks at Les Schwab for a second opinion (NOT telling them about the other 10% and 20% assessment). Les Schwab told me I had plenty of brake pads left, at least 50% on front and back.

So, I guess I can't trust Dan's. Last time I'll go there.
Response from Dan's Auto Center
"Our brake pad percentages are based on a measurement tool and visual inspection, I would like to know if Les Schwab removed all 4 tires and checked inner and outer pad wear as we did. We strive to provide our customers with information on how to maintain their vehicle for safety and to avoid more coslty future repair."

They are a great company. It was great and they are good. They are friendly and do what they say they are going to do and don't try to sell me anything else. They let me know of things that are coming up so I have time to check with someone else to see whether or not it's true. They advise me of service I'll need down the road with them. Their prices are fair.

I didn't have to pay for the oil change because I have a customer loyalty card and it was time for a free one. The visit was fine. They are a really honest place and they keep good track of what I need to do. They always give me a big heads up if there is major service coming, like in the next year I need to think about x. They are also really good in that if I think my brakes need to go, they will say no and that I am talking about 3 more oil changes before I need to do that. I feel like they are not trying to gouge me.

I took my car in because the blower motor for the heater had quit working. I explained to the tech over the phone, and to Jennifer at the counter when dropping the car off, that I believed the problem to be electrical in nature and not a part(s) problem. The blower would kick on occassionally when I'd hit a bump and then turn off when I'd hit another bump making me think it was a bad wire or a short somewhere. They called me that afternoon and said the electrical was fine but that the blower motor and the resistor needed replaced. I picked my car up the following day and the heater was working ok. I left town the next day to drive to Las Vegas for business and an hour out of town the blower motor completely stopped working. It didn't work for the rest of the trip. When I got back to Portland I took the car back to them and again asked that they check the electrical. I was assured that it was a bad part they'd put in but they would also check the electrical. A few hours later I got a call that the pins on the plug in the back of the switch needed to be repaired and that, on top of the nearly $500 I'd spent there the week before, it would cost me almost $200 more to repair the actual cause of the problem in the first place. When I picked the car up that afternoon I asked Jennifer if the parts they'd replaced previously were actually necessary. She said yes that she had asked the tech with no further explanation. They didn't offer to help with the cost of the original misdiagnosis or even acknowledge that they hadn't done the job I asked them to do. Rather than arguing with her at all and making a scene I paid the money and decided to write this review as she had asked me to do when she thought I'd be pleased with their service. Had they simply done what I asked them to do and dignosed the problem correctly to begin with I wouldn't have spent 40 hours in my car driving over mountain passes during winter without heat and probably would've spent $500 less on the repair. They'll not be getting any repeat business from me nor would I suggest them to anyone. It's so hard to find a shop you can trust!
