"Thank you for taking the time and providing a review! -Shiloh Water"
"Thank you so much for the great review!"
"Thanks for the awesome review [Member Name Removed]. We are glad you chose RO to protect your family's drinking water. Even when water is "good" it's still important to protect from potential contaminants down the road. That's why all of our employees have RO on their own homes."
"Thanks for the A review [Member Name Removed]. We really appreciate your business and strive to provide the best service, products and prices possible! Look forward to serving you or your friends and family in the future."
"Thank you for your feedback. Looks like we have some things to work on to better serve you next time. Trouble shooting old electric valves can be challenging, but rather than recommend you paying full price for a new valve, we felt the best way to proceed was to at least try and repair it. After the 3rd service call it was evident we weren't going to fix the valve. In good faith Shiloh Water Systems wrote off the three service calls, and gave you the valve at our cost. (Retail price is $1,200) Replacing expensive major components without first troubleshooting is not how we do business. We make every effort to do what's financially best for our customers. And when it is determined replacement is the only option, we proceed accordingly."
"Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your experience with Shiloh Water Systems. We look forward to helping you determine the best water solution for your own home when the time comes. Remember that the professional consultation and water analysis are always a free service at Shiloh. Don't forget about our 5% discount coupon here on Angie's List! Again, thanks for the 'A' review."
"Thanks for the AAAA rating! We work hard to satisfy every customer"
"[Member name removed], Thank you for the feedback. We apologize for the miscommunication. We strive to satisfy every single customer, but sometimes we fail. We were glad to make everything right last week, and look forward to serving you in the future."
"(member name removed), thank you for the feedback. Other Angie's list members rely on this information to choose a reliable and trustworthy service provider. Judah and our professional installation team go the extra mile for every customer possible, ensuring we maintain the reputation Shiloh Water Systems has garnered for nearly 16 years of service in the community."
"Thanks for the A+ rating. We're confident you will love the K5 drinking water system. Not only is it rated #1 by Consumer Reports, but it has a 10 year warranty and one of the cheapest operating costs of any drinking water system. Merely half a nickel more than a Brita Pitcher!!! (Fourteen cents per gallon on a non-chlorinated water source) Our favorite feature of the K5 is the option to add the healthy, natural minerals back into the water. With the K5, you are literally in control of how your purified water tastes!!! Thanks for taking advantage of our Home Show discount. Available to anyone that visits one of our numerous Willamette Valley home show exhibitions."
We have nothing but good things to say about the responsiveness and professionalism of everyone we dealt with a Shiloh (i.e. the customer service person on the phone when you call, Misti, The owner of Shiloh, Mike, the salesman, Nathan and the installer, Judah).
Two recommendations I would make.
1. If you agree on a system - request it in writing. The system we had installed is the top of the line system - but we had agreed upon a mid tier system to save $$. Shiloh made it right with us and charged us the agreed upon price - but it would have been easier for them, and us, to have the system we agreed upon. In the long run, the system installed will be a better product as it has a longer warranty and a few more bells and whistles.
2. If you have new construction - have the installer come out and assess the place where it will go. Nathan, the salesman is great and I am sure there is no one on the planet more passionate about the Kinetico system than Nathan. However, our house was not quite finished and the tile was already installed and Nathan was a bit perplexed about where and how the system would be installed in our home. The owner of Shiloh (Mike) actually came out and took a look and made the final determination. The install went perfectly and was super easy and efficient.
Judah gave a thorough demonstration after install and answered all of our questions. 2 days after install - Nathan came out and flushed the drinking water system for us and tested the water again. Very very professional and would really recommend Shiloh.
"Thank you for the excellent review. In response to two of your critiques; normally the agreement is in writing, but in your case, it was done over the phone, rather than in person. Regarding installation, there can be challenges in new construction, and with site changes, it's good to tie up any loose ends to make sure the install goes smoothly. While our H2O pros (sales/water chemistry specialists) are trained professionals who bid and design systems, it never hurts to have someone like Mike, whose been in the water business for over 30 years, to confirm the details. Congratulations on your new house. We look forward to serving you in the future. Don't forget we offer 24/7 emergency service, so if there is any issue with your pump, pressure tank/storage tank system, or your water treatment system, we are there to get things back up and running."
Nathan from Shiloh came out to look at our water and location and make recommendations. We were looking for a full install (we did not previously have a water loop to hook up to so needed that also.)
He ran what looked like a comprehensive group of tests, from a branded kit (Shiloh are a Kinetico brand dealer), on our kitchen faucet water. We received the results as part of our quote, at the end of the visit.
He did look around the property, especially the garage where the unit would be installed.
The visit concluded with two recommendations (one higher, one slightly lower cost) in the region of $4,500, to include the softener, a reverse osmosis system and installation (including the loop).
I received an email a few days later saying that they would not do the loop installation as they were not qualified and that I needed to have my own plumber to do the loop. Having to gather new quotes for this aspect highlighted the fact that it would be a further few hundred dollars to get the loop in and I was surprised that Shiloh would only make minor discounts from their original bill, despite no longer doing a major part of the install (the loop).
While I figured out getting the loop installed, I contacted other vendors during the pause. By the time I had spoken with other water professionals, I had learned a lot more about the industry and had a rough idea of the true costs of water softeners.
I won't speak too much on the brand Shiloh sell but they are the most expensive and promote features that were (in our case) available for less elsewhere or unnecessary (twin tanks, water-powered).
I also did what everyone getting water treatment must do before ever talking to a vendor - namely, have the water tested by a professional, independent lab. This proved very interesting as just about every vendor I dealt with had completely different results to the lab test and this can make a huge difference in what equipment or settings you would need.
Shiloh's results were definitely wrong on the iron content and pH. These are important - in fact, when I mentioned their pH result to the lab, they thought I would be lucky to have any faucets left as it would have been highly acidic! Shiloh are probably no different to the other vendors and they likely can't match the test results of a professional laboratory on a home visit but remember not to put too much stock in these vendor tests.
In the end, I told Shiloh I would not be doing business with them. I went with a local, independent water treatment company who had installed the community well and knew our water very well. They also put it in for half the price of the Kinetico system and their original quote had even included installing the loop which Shiloh would not do. As it happened, we already had the loop put in by our plumber and so the installer discounted the bill accordingly - again something Shiloh reluctantly did by a fraction in their quote.
Nathan seemed surprised when we said we were not interested in dealing with them any more. He requested feedback on why and seemed to think it was just because they would not put the loop in. Really that part was the beginning of me learning more about the science, business and practices and once I could see how all the vendors stacked up, Shiloh were out of the running because their units were too expensive, yet virtually did the same as units half their price or had features that were superfluous or not as impressive as marketed. Additionally, Nathan attempted to tack on things like "mileage fee" to the original quote which is something we don't stand for and for that alone, we would have ceased dealing with Shiloh.
Shiloh are not alone in selling high priced water treatment equipment but if you truly compare systems and don't fall for the glossy brochures and slick advertising, there are equivalent systems out there which will do the same job for much less. Remember to get several quotes and include an independent dealer who can assemble a unit from common (not proprietary) parts so you can see the wide range of prices. Most of all, get your water independently tested and compare it to the vendor tests.
01/07/14 I've amended my review and changed the overall rating from a D to a C. Shiloh had recommended an iron filter and my installer didn't think one necessary. However, their softener did little to change the yellow tinted water. Fast forward to the end of 2013 and our Homeowners Association offered to buy everyone iron filters if the homeowners paid to have them installed. We did this as we had little to lose and much to gain and the yellow water is gone - therefore, Shiloh were correct and I respect this point.
However, I stand by the rest of my review.
"We appreciate feedback regarding our Free Water Testing Service. Some good points are raised that we can hopefully clarify concerning water testing, Kinetico Water Systems, and installation code required to install a water treatment system in the State of Oregon. Water Testing: Shiloh Water Systems Inc. has been testing water for thousands of consumers throughout Western Oregon over the last 14 years. Shiloh is a small systems operator and provides water testing and water quality management for several communities, thousands of home owners, businesses and industry as well as federal state and local entities. Shiloh Water Systems is the Water Treatment Provider for 17 Home Depot stores in Oregon. We employ both field, and state certified testing through our partners. Our H2O pros carry custom La Motte professional water testing kits, an industry standard. We also use Hach testing equipment. Many of the tests we perform in the field require the same analytical instruments and test reagents used by Oregon’s certified labs, only we do it for free on-site, and provide the results right away. (Bacteria testing can only be done in a state certified lab) Field testing is unique in that some tests are more accurate if done immediately upon pulling the sample. PH is sensitive to time and transit, so often there will be differences from a field PH test and the lab’s result. This year we upgraded our mobile lab kits to have an electronic PH reader as well as the liquid reagent test. This provides our professionals with 2 methods of testing for PH and ensures accuracy. Water being a fluid element, pun intended, it is common to see variability in water tests. As water quality professionals it’s no surprise to us. That’s one reason why we always provide water treatment options that accommodate changes to the quality of water. Remember, a test is simply a snapshot. Many variables can influence the level of minerals such as iron. Neither field testing, nor state certified labs are infallible. For that reason we do visual inspections of plumbing and fixtures to get an accurate assessment of what the water is doing in the home over time. Kinetico Softeners: …….are unique. We are proud to be the Independent Authorized Kinetico Dealer in the Willamette Valley, of a product that is built right her in the USA,. Kinetico is the most talked about water conditioning manufacturer in the world, with the longest warranties, the best technology, and the most efficient and long lasting systems available. There’s a reason why Consumer Reports, Consumers Digest and many others say that Kinetico is one of the best. Shiloh Water Systems used to build their own softeners with industry standard parts, but once consumers understand the advantages of Kinetico’s two tank, non-electric, low maintenance, salt saving features, they chose Kinetico. Shiloh does build electric units if that is what the consumer needs. Additionally, this spring Kinetico introduced more affordable, and efficient whole house water softening systems. They start at just $1,099 + installation. Shiloh also offers salt-free conditioning solutions. Shiloh offers water treatment solutions for almost any water problem and budget and is not only the Kinetico dealer for Oregon, but also a Water Right dealer and vendor of thousands of professional grade filtration products. Shiloh also has a well services division that provides pump systems, storage tank systems and virtually any service a well needs once it's drilled. Installation: Shiloh Water Systems has a Limited Plumbing License and has a perfect record with the Oregon CCB. State, county and city building code requires licensed plumbers to install service loops. We no longer charge mileage fees for water treatment installations."
"Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the kind words. We love what we do, and enjoy helping people, whether it's to test water for a home sale, or confirm the healthfulness of drinking water."
Thanks to his guidance, we were able to replace a few small parts at a nearby hardware store, reconnect the brine tank to the softener, and knew exactly what to do to get it up and running again.
He'll definitely get our business should we need him in the future!
