The Hardwood Pro
About us
Family owned hardwood flooring business. I got an early start in this trade back in the mid 1990's when my Mom was the manager of a hardwood shop in Florida. I went to college and graduated in 2004, started my own company here in Washington in 2007, and even though the economy has had it's ups and downs we have done well because we truly go above and beyond for our customers! We offer great prices, and the great thing about our reviews is that you can accept a great price and still be assured of high quality. We have a great reputation, and we specialize in residential work so we are all friendly, positive and easy to work with!

The work was done quickly and we were treated professionally. The provider seems to have a very deep breadth of knowledge about this work and educated us along the way. We were ecstatic about the relationship and his can-do attitude (finding the same size wood/type was a chore).
The initial work looked spectacular -- dare I say perfect? And had I given this review immediately afterward, would have rated it as high as possible. However, spaces began to appear between the slats of the wood. This is most likely due to the wood not being fully dry before installation and it shrinking a bit -- something he specifically called out as a precaution he takes.
At the end of the day the floor does not look very good because of the little gaps here and there, even to a casual observer.
We had another company replace some wood in our downstairs as part of an insurance claim (flooding), which required new wood and refinishing the entire floor. After 3 years there is not the slightest hint of a gap between those boards. So in comparison, the work done via this Angie's List deal was pretty sub-par.
Why do I grade this Fair/3 stars? Because of everything else that went into getting the work done. I have a feeling this was a fluke -- that the wood was more moist than is normal -- and that even waiting the extra time we did for it to dry wasn't enough.
In fact, I called him back to do more work but found he had moved south so wasn't available...
"My company "The Hardwood Pro" has been shut down for about a year now, we have pursued another industry and shut down the business on good terms with our workers and clients. If I had chosen to continue to run 'The Hardwood Pro" I would be pretty upset with this review. We did a good job, took every precaution, followed all the rules regarding acclimation moisture barriers and did everything possible from the labor point of view to insure a quality job and a stable environment for the flooring. The reality is that wood is a natural product that moves with time and moisture, there is nothing that an installer can do that would guarantee a wood floor will not form small gaps over long periods of time. The customer seems to remember us going through all the steps including acclimation, proper moisture barrier etc. Wood floors move over time, it is natural and normal and has nothing to do with the quality of our labor. Our work was nearly flawless we followed ALL nationally accepted guidelines for our work and we did a really good job. When reviewing a company please consider the weight of that review and how negatively that could impact a small business."
"Thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review of our last hardwood project in the Puget Sound area. We have indeed moved down to the Portland, OR area pursuing a career in a different field. Thank you to everyone in the Angie's List community that has supported The Hardwood Pro (and family) these last 4 years!"
"Thank you so much for the review! I feel like we had a great year last year, and this year is off to a good start as well. It was a pretty good sized project, all new Solid White Oak flooring, with an impressive set of stairs near the front entry. The floors and stairs came out fantastic. The customer was really a pleasure to work with and lived in the upstairs of the home while we did the downstairs and stairs. So we interacted pretty much every day and myself and my crew had a great time working with them. Enjoy the floors!"
Note: I cannot comment about the cost, because it is my policy not to call contractors twice. I consider it to be inexcusable when contractors are "too busy" to return your call.
"Thank you for reviewing our service! It was actually really nice working out on Vashon Island and I'm really happy that this project worked out. It was our busy season when we first got the call (I always try to at least return call even if we are booked up a bit) and as it was out of our normal work area I had said that I wasn't sure if we were the right company to do the job. The customer seemed like a really nice person to work with and wasn't in a big hurry so he offered to wait till the slower season. It ended up working out really well. The project was more difficult than normal as the flooring was wide plank Fir flooring that was 'top nailed' with large nails leaving rows of nail holes and gaps between the large planks. Luckily I have seen this type of flooring from when I lived in Florida pine floors like this are fairly common. We were able to match the plank flooring and replaced some large damaged areas and blended them in seamlessly with the original. We applied a light stain to mimic the aged pine look and it came out great. The customer was really easy to work with and we communicated very well throughout the project. They were staying in the upstairs of the home while we worked on the main floor. Thanks again for the work, enjoy the floors!"
The owner and his installer, Robert Banner, showed up promptly at the appointed time, 8:00 AM, and immediately set up for the job. The owner said the job should be completed in one day.
Soon after, the owner left, and Robert went to work. I have never seen a more expert technician, who worked steadily and did and outstanding job with the installation. The floor is truly beautiful, and we could not have asked for a more professional installation. After the job was complete, Robert made a detailed clean up, and left everything very probably cleaner than it was before hestarted the job. The job was complete by 5:00PM. I would recommend The Hardwood Pro for any hardwood flooring work you might have. And a special kudo to Robert Banner, the technician on this job.

"Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review! This client was very easy to work with and we had great communication from the start. The material the homeowner chose was not in stock so we had to wait a week for the materials to arrive which is why our original install date had to be pushed back. The project went very smoothly, I was there in the morning to help Robert get started and move the fridge. Once he was good to go I left him to work on installing the flooring. Robert did a great job and called me around 2pm to say that he was ready for me to help him get the fridge back in place and so I helped Robert put on all the finishing touches. I don't think the project could have been done much smoother or more efficiently. I am particularly happy to see Robert mentioned in this review (and he has been mentioned in others) because one of the biggest selling points of my service as a small business is that if you hire us you know who is working in your home. It's just me and Robert, and 1 part time worker, so it's a small tight knit crew. We work very well together and we are the kind of workers that people enjoy having work in their home. I regularly get great feedback that whether I'm on the jobsite or not my crew is friendly, polite, and doing their best work. Thanks again for the work, enjoy the floors!"
"Thanks for taking the time to review our work! It wasn't a huge project, but the repairs were actually pretty difficult as we were sanding only a few spots that had the discoloration, not the whole area. So blending in those sanding spots and matching the color of the existing floors was pretty difficult. The effort paid off though, as we were able to blend in the spots very well and it looked great when we were done. Thanks again for choosing us for the work!"
"I have to say that I am both surprised and disappointed to see such low marks for our work. Leaving attractive floors and happy customers is what keeps us working and so we take ALL customer feedback to heart whether it is positive or negative. As is our normal process I met with this client and his wife upon completion of the floor work. We met and looked over the completed work, they were happy with the floors and I was paid in full for our work. At that time the customer was not upset and I would have thought we would get a good review. There was an issue with some dust particles in the finish, but we were using a high gloss finish which can show particles that are not normally visible, and I did inform the customer of that as a known problem with high gloss oil based finish (this is not the finish we normally use). The wife in particular was thrilled with the floors and mentioned over and over how happy she was with our work. It’s hard to look at a D grade on a project that passed inspection with what seemed to be a happy customer. There was a mistake when I did the final coat of finish on the stair treads some of the finish dripped down the wall below the stairs overnight. When I coated the stairs I checked for drips along the nosing as I went, but as the finish takes a long time to dry, over the course of hours after I left some finish dripped to the wall below. The next day I cleaned up all of the finish that had dripped as it hadn’t fully hardened and came off the wall. It was all cleaned up and taken care of. We normally sand stairs in place. Taking the stairs off and sanding and finishing them elsewhere was not a service I offered or agreed to prior to work starting. The customer was there each day so they knew we were sanding the stairs in place during the process. When I cleaned up the finish they did not seem upset about it at all. If a mistake happens we are always willing to clean it up and fix it, which is what we did in this case. We have many reviews of our service that mention the amount of work we put into containing our sanding dust and jobsite cleanup at the end of our process. The sanding dust is something we take into account on every project and when I was there doing the inspection I thought we had done a good cleanup. When I meet with a client for an inspection I check the jobsite cleanliness as well as the quality of our flooring work. Dust containment, collection, and cleanup is an important part of our service. We specialize in working in homes where people are already living in the home, so we never want to dust out someone's home. I have discussed this review with my crew and it is definitely a strong reminder for us to watch every detail, check every vent, and to make sure to do the dust cleanup behind the fridge before moving the fridge back into place. Our projects have consistently been going very well, we don’t typically have any issues like this. We take pride in our work and if there is something that needs fixed we are 100% committed to getting it done right. We regularly get really good feedback from our customers and I hope that our future potential customers will give us the chance to earn some more great reviews."
"Thank you for the great review! Yeah it really worked out well, with this project fitting in on a week that another project had rescheduled on us. We applied a dark and rich brown stain on the floors and it just came out gorgeous. There were many of areas that needed patches and repairs where we took out the old boards and some tile areas and we were able to blend the new wood in with the old seamlessly. I was just super happy with the performance of the crew and the end result. Thanks again for choosing us for the work and enjoy the floors!"
"Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review! Our goal is always to make the process as easy on the customer as possible. With refinishing the dust can be a pain if not properly controlled and that is something we take alot of time and effort to get right. I couldn't have been happier with how the floors came out, we took some 20 year old floors and made them look like a brand new floor. It was a pleasure working with you guys!"
"Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of our service! It was a good sized project and it all went very smoothly from start to finish. The customer was staying in the home during the work, and one of the good things about our service is that is fairly common for us so we are used to making sure to be accommodating to make the process as easy as possible on the customer. It was great working with you guys, and thank you again for taking the time to write us a review."
"Thank you for taking the time to review our service! It was a pleasure working with you guys and of course we always love local work here in Tacoma :) Enjoy the floors!!"
"Thank you for the great review! It was a pleasure working in your home, and I'm really happy with how well the project went. The crew and I are all thankful for the steady work from the Angie's List community, so its hard not to be happy to be working :-) Thank you again for choosing us for the work, enjoy the floors."
When we were ready for finishing, he sanded and got the first coat on in 1 day, put on the 2nd coat the next afternoon and we were back in at the end of the third day. BEAUTIFUL!
People are unable to tell where any of the new stuff is; it ALL looks new!
"Thank you for the review!"
"Great working with you again! Thank you for taking the time to get a review up for us. It is always rewarding starting with an old floor that's looking pretty beat, and then a couple days later it's looking like new again! Best of luck on a quick sale of the home."
"Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our service! It was a pleasure working with you. I was very happy with the outcome of the floors. Its always rewarding to get an older floor looking like brand new again. Thank you again for choosing us for the work!"
Will and he guys are busy, but the are worth the wait. There has to be a reason he is busy and had to wait 2 weeks before he could get to my floors, compared to one person who bid on my floors who kept bugging me and stating he could start right away.
My parents had there floors refinished 10 years ago and stated Will did a better job. I cant seem to say enough, other then give him a chance you won't be disappointed by the price and GREAT quality work.
"Thank you so much for the great review! I was really happy with how great the floors turned out, and I think the dark stain color went great with the home. We have been staying busy and over the last few months we've been staying booked 3-4 weeks in advance thanks to the wonderful Angie's List community! So it is a little bit more of a wait than some other companies, but the quality is well worth it!"
"Thank you for buying one of our coupons and writing a review of our service! Weather permitting we do prefer to do our cutting outside, or if there is an area like a garage that we can do the cutting we are happy to accommodate that. We would love to work with you again if you are in need of any work down the road. Thanks again for choosing us for the work."
"Great to see a review from you! We have another project coming up in the same area and so I was thinking about you and your project the other day. I was really happy with your stain color choice for the floors. Refinishing a large portion of the home can always be a bit of a pain especially losing easy access to the kitchen, but this customer was a trooper and her great positive vibe made it easy to go to work and do our best, Thank you again for choosing us for the work!"
"Thank you for taking the time to review our service! It was great working with you. I love Hickory floors, Hickory is a little more difficult to work with than some other types of wood. It was definitely worth the extra effort, the floor turned out great. I hope the new floors help sell the home! Thanks again for choosing us for the work :)"
"Thank you for taking the time to review our service! It was a pleasure working in your home. I am really happy that we were able to get the floors looking like new again. I apologize if some of the dust on the walls got missed on this project, normally we are able to get it all with our cleanup process. I will make sure the crew knows as well to make sure we are as thorough as possible with our clean up after sanding. Thank you again for the work, and enjoy the floors!"
"Thank you for the second review! It's always a pleasure working with you guys at the apartments. I am really happy to hear the feedback on my workers, any time I can't be on the jobsite I expect my crew to provide the same top notch quality and service. Thank you for the work!"
"Thank you for buying one of our coupons and writing a review of our work! The floors came out looking great and it was a pleasure working in your home."
Will and his crew completed the work in 2 phases, the first phase in Jan and the second phase in July, due to some remodeling work at my house in between. He was very flexible, very responsive, and tried hard to accommodate my schedule and needs. For example, he managed to come out in May with a short notice to install the subfloor and hardwood in my powder room so that my remodeling contractor could install the vanities. Another example was that at the end of the job, he was happy to cut and install some baseboards at a very reasonable hourly rate.
Will has an amazing team, including Rob, Michael, Miky, and Will himself. They did fantastic work installing new hardwood boards and refinishing existing flooring with 3 coats while taking great effort protecting walls and stair rails. They helped us choose the floor color. They were meticulous -- when I was going to mention that the master closet floor was about half an inch lower than the master bath floor, they had already put a transition wood piece in place. They appeared to love the work -- I heard them singing quite a few times.:-) The finished floor looked great and we will surely enjoy it for many years to come.
Will I hire Will?s company again for future hardwood flooring work? Yes. In fact, my original phase 2 scope did not include the 2 rooms upstairs. When I planned to add these 2 rooms, I just talked to Will and didn?t even bother to get more bids. Their high quality work and customer focus made the decision so much easier.
"Thank you for taking the time to review our service! It was great working with you and I'm happy we were able to get those floors looking so good! This was a large project and really showcased our ability to match existing wood, dark stain, and baseboard/trim work. Thanks again for choosing us for the work!"
