Because the logistics of moving a house full of furniture and cost, I decided to split the job into two different installations. They were several months apart. Matt came the for the first part of the job. He was prompt, and very professional. He did an outstanding job! His attention to detail was amazing. I know that there are several seems in the living room, but I can't find them. I am really pleased with his work.
The second installation didn't go quite so well. Travis and Larry arrived on time. They were friendly and respectful. They were scheduled for a day and a half of work. The first day went ok. They spent quite a bit of time on the phone dealing with other jobs. I understand they need to earn a living, but I feel they were distracted. They arrived on time the second morning and got right to work. I could tell that they were rushed and were trying to finish very fast. They made several comments to each other about having to get to their next appointment. While cleaning up after their departure, I found several mistakes that were poorly patched and even a hole about the size of a half dollar. They did return the following week to fix the mistakes. The seems are generally ok. But just ok. Overall, I am disappointed in their workmanship.
Crown did offer to send out a different installer. I declined. While the seems aren't great, they aren't bad enough to go through the hassle.
My overall experience was ok. I am not sure yet if I would buy carpet from them again.
One thing to keep in mind. The installers are not employees of Crown Carpet. They are subcontractors. It makes a difference!
1. first day was tile day. Went okay. Nice enough and punctual. showed me previous mistakes made by prior floor people. I notice contractors love to do this! Unfortunately, this guy left mess in our neighbor's driveway which we had to clean up (grout run-off and other muck). We later discovered that grout/gluey stuff was spread on a couple tiles and we could not remove. Mike, their spec guy, came out and used some very smelly solution to clean it up.
Three months later we are discovered they had forgotten to grout one area. Simple mistake easily fixed. Requested that they just provide the grout and we could do it. That was two weeks ago and we haven't heard back.
2. carpet - in general, the installers were not impressive. One mentioned the carpet was cheap to another guy. I overheard this. Well, maybe cheap to him, but cost us a pretty penny! I did not appreciate hearing that. After they left, we noticed that one of the seams was buckling, bunching up in the hall. All borders were shedding, but we were told that this would happen for a bit then stop. It didn't stop. Finally, the seam was bunching so much it was both visible and we could feel it under our feet. Two others also very noticeable. Really looks bad.
We had a mishap with our fish tank leaking water and ended up having to pull the carpet up in one corner. fortunately the water was clean and we got to it fast. got it dried out along with the pad and called asking them to come out. To be fair here, Mike was reasonable about scheduling. Worked around our work schedules. asked him to come so I could show him the seam problems. we now had a hole showing in a doorway where the carpet had pulled from the seam. He was surprised but said they'd fix it.
Their fix took a while. Both seams were redone. they cut and restretched. This time they told me the carpet was cheap to my face. I asked them about that and they said it was just not good carpet and gave me some examples of other carpet they installed that "looked better".
A month later, we are now experiencing pulling across the carpet from just walking and vacuuming. the carpet is literally pulling out thread by thread. we also have three seams pulling up and looking ugly. The carpet is matted down three months into its installation. Looks like it's years old instead of months.
AS a comparison -- We had had our carpet in our business installed, much cheaper and seams don't show there. carpet looks much better and it was half the price a year into it.
At the end of April, I went into Crown since we hadn't hear back from Mike or anyone. I asked the sales person to write a note to him. Also left with samples for our other rooms since we were still considering using Crown. Weirdly, we have not heard back from Crown on anything. Now, you'd think a sales guy might follow up to see if we were done with the samples or had made any decisions. You'd think that sales guy #1 might check back to see how things were going. This is the most disinterested bunch I've ever worked with on a major job.
We're going to attempt to talk to the owners, but based on the recent reviews on Yelp, my guess is this won't go well.
Rick showed up on time and got directly to work. He removed the old carpet and padding, then the staples that had held the old padding in place. Put new tack strips down in the corner where the old fireplace had been. It took a little over 2 hours, I believe. I was impressed with his fast work, cleaning up after himself and leaving the leftover carpet pieces behind. He also removed the old carpet and padding.
