He has done both minor repairs and a couple larger jobs at our house with our breaker box.
We moved into a new and modern condo after having lived in our old Laurelhurst home for 35 years. Since the condo had almost no light fixtures and was therefore very dark, our first task was to get attractive ceiling fixtures and have them installed by an electrician quickly.
After doing a lot of research, we identified the fixtures we wanted for the kitchen, dining room and living room, and bought them from Accent Lighting in Lake Oswego. (See our Angie’s review of that excellent store.) We knew that the most problematic part of the installation work would be installing can-lights in the kitchen ceiling where there was extensive AC duct work and electrical cable runs for which we had no plans or schematics showing precisely where can lights could safely be installed. Recognizing the potential problem, Shella Lake, store manager of Accent Lighting gave us the name of an electrician in whom she had complete confidence: Steele Electric.
Five electrical contractors gave us bids. Only one, Dan Steele of Steele Electric, believed that 4” can lights could be installed in the kitchen easily and without damaging the duct work and cabling. The other four contractors claimed the only safe method (which they proposed) was for us to hire a dry-wall contractor to knock down the entire kitchen ceiling to expose the duct work and cabling and then have their electrician install large “new construction” can lights, after which, the dry-wall contractor would return and rebuild the ceiling.
Dan Steele rejected that approach as being unnecessarily destructive, messy, costly, and time consuming. He explained that because much of his work is on remodel projects, he and his team knew how to easily find and work around the location of existing ducts, cabling and other impediments, without having to take down an entire ceiling. Dan gave us a bid that was one-third to one-half the cost of the bids we got from the other electricians, even though the other electrical contractors based theirs bids on the assumption we’d have a drywall contractor remove the ceiling to reveal the duct work and cabling. (Dan recommended Peter Pimentel, owner of the Deptartment of Construction, for the dry-wall work. See our Angie’s review of them.)
Dan’s team arrived around 9 AM.. Installation of the 4” cans and the rest of the work went without a hitch. They were completely finished with the entire project by 9 PM that evening Our condo lights are wonderful.
