I bought the house and totally gutted it out, removing all the lathe and plaster walls with the hopes of completing the work myself. Unfortunately, it was a bigger job than anticipated. On arriving home each night, I saw significant changes and progress. Tom allowed me to complete some of the work myself, like hiring his hardwood floor guy and doing some demolition. His workers were on time every day and the company did not leave the job until it was completed. Hoffard treated me like my little restoration and kitchen job was as important as some of his large projects and they are always available on the phone when needed. His subcontractors and material suppliers seem on the ball as well. They guarantee their price against any over-runs which is really important when dealing with an old house like mine.
Description of Work: Hoffard completed an entire kitchen remodel, supplied appliances, all new finish work in the entire house including French style doors, framed out and finished an attic dormer, all new electrical for the entire house, all new sheet rock for entire house and remodeled one bathroom completely. All new electrical panel and service, some replacement plumbing, light HVAC, demolition, cabinets, granite countertops, tile kitchen and bath floors. They even threw in the demo of my basement for free and disposed of the old material for me "since they were there" Tom said.

What really torpedoed this project was the designer. It took her weeks to meet with us, and when she did, she would frequently neglect to appropriately updated the drawing plan as we had requested. One of the worst errors was that she recommended a particular cabinet style to us based on our desire for "straight, squared edges", but then when we finally got to see that style, we realized they had rounded edges, and nothing like the designer described. One more note, the price quoted by this contractor was more than $2000 higher than the price we actually paid for the identical product from the contractor we ended up using.
Description of Work: We selected this company to do a major kitchen renovation. Over the course of eight weeks, we planned the kitchen, selected the cabinets, appliances and met with the designer. However, when it came time to sign the contract (which we were eager to do), the contractor refused to give us any kind of itemized list of the work to be performed, and the price kept climbing from his initial verbal "guesstimate." We eventually had to choose another contractor because he would not commit to the project in writing.

Response from HOFFARD HOME IMPROVEMENT
PLEASE READ: UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS THE TYPE OF QUASI-LIBEL MATERIAL THAT PASSES THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKING, IN MY OPINION. THIS MEMBER WAS NEVER A CUSTOMER. AFTER READING THESE COMMENTS BASED ON HER ORIGINAL STATEMENT IT WILL BE EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY WE DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH HER, WHICH I BELIEVE IS ANY COMPANY'S DECISION. FIRST: NO WORK WAS PERFORMED FOR THIS CUSTOMER, NONE. THIS MEMBER ORIGINALLY STATED THAT THERE WAS WORK DONE, BUT AFTER I CONTACTED ANGIE'S LIST IT WAS REMOVED. SECOND: NO BID WAS GIVEN TO THIS WOMAN, ONLY AN ESTIMATE OF COSTS. NO CONTRACT WAS EVER DRAWN OR PRESENTED AS SHE DESCRIBES. IN HER WORDS "SHE WAS EAGER TO SIGN THE CONTRACT", BUT THEN SAYS "THE CONTRACTOR WOULD NOT COMMIT TO THE WORK IN WRITING" THIS IS A LARGE CONTRADICTION THAT SHE STATES HERSELF. IF SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH ONE OF OUR DOOR STYLES, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE THAN HAPPY TO PROVIDE HER WITH AN ITEMIZATION OF COSTS, BUT WHAT IS THE POINT IF WE DON’T HAVE WHAT SHE IS EXPECTING? COSTS DIFFER FROM ONE DESIGN TO ANOTHER. THE EIGHT WEEKS SHE MENTIONS ALSO INCLUDED TIME SHE WAS AWAY ON BUSINESS AS I RECALL. INTERESTINGLY, BASED ON COUNTY RECORDS THIS MEMBER NEVER PURCHASED ANY PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL OR BUILDING PERMITS FOR A RECENT KITCHEN REMODEL. EITHER SHE NEVER COMPLETED ANY KITCHEN REMODELING LIKE SHE SAID, OR SHE HAS HIRED A "CONTRACTOR" AND PERFORMED THE WORK ILLEGALLY. IF SHE ACTUALLY DID REMODEL HER KITCHEN, I TRULY HOPE SHE FOUND THE PERFECT CABINETS WITH SQUARE EDGES. I'M NOT SURE WHICH EDGE SHE SPEAKS OF, BUT WISH WE COULD HAVE PROVIDED SOMETHING MORE TO HER LIKING. WE ARE NOT A CUSTOM CABINET SHOP BUT PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY SEMI-CUSTOM CABINETS IN A VARIETY OF STYLES AND SPECIES. IN REMODELING, ESPECIALLY DURING LARGE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS, PERSONALITIES ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND IT IS CRUCIAL THAT THE HOMEOWNER HIRE'S A CONTRACTOR THAT THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE HAVING A WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH. THE SAME IS TRUE IN ANY PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVOR. A SMART CONTRACTOR OR PROFESSIONAL SHOULD AVOID THOSE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS WHO HE/SHE FEELS THAT THEY DO NOT OR WILL NOT CONTINUE TO HAVE A STRONG WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH. PERHAPS THIS IS THE CASE HERE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS MEMBER'S PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR OF POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON A MEMBERSHIP BASED DOMAIN ABOUT A COMPANY THAT SHE DID NOT HIRE, BUT NO DOUBT THIS HAS HELPED HER CHANNEL HER ANGER TOWARDS NOT HIRING US. HOFFARD HOME IMPROVEMENT HAS BEEN IN THE REMODELING BUSINESS SINCE 1947, AND IN THIS TIME WE HAVE LEARNED MUCH ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING CUSTOMER RELATIONS BUT ALSO COMPREHEND THE DANGERS OF REACTIONARY SPITE. FURTHER MORE, ONE NEGATIVE REVIEW FROM A NON-CUSTOMER IS HARDLY A LARGE ENOUGH SAMPLE SIZE TO ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO VARIABLES. IN LIEU OF THIS SITUATION, WE HERE AT HOFFARD’S HAVE TAKEN PRECAUTIONS TO LIMIT THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS DURING THE SELECTION PHASE OF KITCHEN REMODELING. WE NOW INSIST THAT EACH NEW CUSTOMER VISITS OUR SHOWROOM TO PERSONALLY VIEW WHAT CABINET DOORS ARE AVAILABLE TO THEM THROUGH OUR MANUFACTURERS.
