TEDS EXCAVATING LLC

Ted's was a subcontractor to Jade Smith Paving, who was contracted to remove some existing crappy paving previously done by Rose City Paving. He came out the day before the work and I discussed with him the detailed estimate already done by JS. There was an old concrete slab in one area of the driveway that was very solid to me and would be covered by several inches of rock base, so it was not proposed to be removed, but Ted insisted it should come out so I reluctantly agreed, thinking that he was more experienced in this area than I. I did not know how much this would add to the JS bid and did not know how much Ted's subcontract with JS was. On the day the day for excavation work, he showed up promptly, and started removing the RCP paving, which in some areas was as little as 1" (it was supposed to be 2" minimum). When he got to the concrete slab he found out how solid it was and left it in place. The rest of the excavation and sub-base work was fairly straightforward. Later, when JS sent me the revised contract, including removing the slab, I questioned the extra for that work and found out Ted's had not told JS the work had not been done. Ted's does very reasonable excavation work, without making a big mess, and if I had any more excavation work to be done I might hire him if it was clearly understood, in writing, what was included and not included and what happened if some of the work was not done. The above problem may have been a lack of communication between Ted's and JS, but was resolved to my satisfaction.
