Rose City Acupuncture & Massage
About us
I am extremely gentle with my acupuncture, but what really sets me apart is the osteopathic bodywork, a type of medical massage. This uses the neurological system and connective tissue to create lasting changes in the body. Regular massage just relaxes you for a few hours: This type of bodywork actually corrects how the muscles function. It's great for resolving chronic pain, old and new injuries, and increasing sports performance. I only see one patient at a time. House calls, gift certificates, and corporate events available. I also teach classes on bodywork. Online booking available. Smoking cessation treatments are always FREE. I accept cash, checks, credit cards and insurance.

"So happy you and McTavish are enjoying your walks again! :)"
"So glad you enjoyed it! It was a pleasure to take care of you. :) Sharon"
"Happy to help! FYI for those seeking acupuncture only (no massage), followup visits can be reduced to half an hour at $55."
"Thanks for your review! I'm very sorry about the punctuality issue: I make it a point to run my office on time (99% of my appointments start and end as scheduled), but occasionally there are circumstances beyond my control. I'm afraid you had the bad luck to see me on those days. If I can make it up to you, please let me know. Sharon"
"Thank you!"
Furthermore, anyone who has chronic pain should consider seeing her for therapy -- even if you can't stand needles Sharon may be able to provide acupressure instead that might benefit your condition. I also find her treatments to be incredibly relaxing! I often fall asleep while on the table, and feel pain benefits from her massage and acupuncture therapies.
Honestly, there is no one better. Sharon also has personal experience with alternative treatments and can make holistic recommendations to benefit the health of the individuals she treats. I couldn't think of anyone who could better benefit those in chronic pain or who have struggled to find relief from back problems. Sharon is highly experienced in this area & can offer a lot of information or insight into your condition.
Her office is located in a old Victorian-style house in SE Portland, on Belmont Street, on the second floor of the building that is shared among several alternative practitioners. So those who can't climb a short flight of stairs should be aware that a stairwell is the only way to get to her office, but it isn't hard to climb. Plus, because its a shared office space there could be someone treating another patient in another room, so being quiet might be necessary. But these are minor elements that Sharon's exceptional treatment more than overcomes.
"Thanks for your thoughts! I'm really glad I've been able to help you. I hope to move to a site without stairs within the year. *hug* NOTE: I moved to an ADA compliant building in 2015"
"I'm very glad I could help. Thanks for your kind words! :) Sharon"
"Thank you so much! It was my pleasure to take care of you. :) Sharon"
Appointments have a consistent format: after discussing my current complaints or concerns, she leaves the room while I disrobe and get on the massage table under the soft sheets. Sharon returns and begins the acupuncture treatment, disinfecting my skin before placing the needles. it doesn't hurt, there is no discomfort, and once she has finished placing the needles she asks what type of music I would like to listen to while "cooking". She has quite the collection of tunes and it is easy to find something that is relaxing. Sometimes I remain awake during the treatment, other times I nod off. Once completed, she returns to remove the needles. If the session includes massage, that follows the acupuncture.
A quick note about Sharon's massage technique. For over 15 years, I've been going to massage therapists for deep tissue massage and always believed that this style was the most effective -- probably because it is like being hit by a ton of bricks: it felt somewhat "uncomfortable" and my muscles were "beaten up" so it must be working. Sharon's style is more like a ninja. It sneaks up quietly, looks like very little effort, but totally effective. I realize I'm mixing metaphors, but it is like she is coaxing a wild horse back into the stable -- using gentleness as opposed to force. if you had told me six months ago that my massage style preference would change so radically, i would have laughed and replied "no way." I would have been wrong. Today I would say that 20 minutes of focused massage with Sharon is more effective than an hour with someone else. Seriously. She's brilliant.
Making an appointment through the website is very easy. Availability, services, and fees are clearly identified. Appointments are confirmed via email. The office, located on the second floor of a converted house, is easy to find on Belmont near 39th. There is not a dedicated parking lot; however there is plenty of street parking. Sharon also will make house calls. Payments are easy and she takes credit cards.
"Thank you! It's been a real pleasure getting to know you. :)"
"Thanks for the feedback - I'm glad your arm is doing better! :)"
"Thank you, sweetheart! I'm not a doctor... I just work miracles with my Master's degree. :)"
Sharon worked on me for both physical illness and emotional stress after my brother died, and "headed off" what was clearly becoming a serious respiratory infection. She helped me when I hurt my knee (and recommended I see a surgeon; I feel a stronger level of trust for any practitioner who will refer when different medical treatment is needed), and she cleared her calendar when I needed an immediate appointment.
"Thank you. I'm glad you felt so taken care of - that's my biggest priority!"
"Thank you! It was a pleasure to help you. :) Sharon"
