The underlying quality, or severe lack thereof, has become painfully apparent over the last year and a half. There is not a single element of the construction efforts that has not had significant issues "once the paint dried". I'm left with a kitchen that I hate, every time I step foot into it.
- A screw used to secure the dishwasher was apparently lost during install and a drywall screw was substituted. The dishwasher door scratched immediately.
- Cabinets were removed to allow for floor install, and when put back against the wall just pushed into place. The paint had ripped, leaving 1" sawtooth edges that were never corrected.
- They installed a cantilevered breakfast bar, and again I questioned the engineering of having a 1/2 plywood base screwed into a 2x4 not being sufficient anchoring and bracing would be necessary. Again I was told there wouldn't be an issue. That bar now has a .5" downward deflection and I'll be installing additional bracing.
- Hinges for a cabinet door were screwed into the edge of 1/2 MDF. MDF can't hold screws on the edge. That door isn't usable.
- The surface mount cooktop was incorrectly installed, leaving a gap that results in any spills dripping into the cabinetry. the instructions in the installation manual were not followed - the foam gasket was not applied, nor left behind for me to use as a fix.
- The undermount sink was held in place by placing it between the countertop and 1/2 plywood underlayment. The sink has separated, since that's not an approved installation. When I called Craftsman back out to fix the issue, the same person who performed the original install recommended a fix of screwing a wood screw up into the plywood to push the sink into place. I declined to have him ever set foot in my home again and have since corrected the issue myself.
- They removed the particleboard subfloor that was under the existing vinyl. When I questioned why no new plywood underlayment would go down before the hardwood I was assured by Chris that the subfloor was sound enough and any leveling and cupping issues would work themselves out when the hardwood went down. Wrong. Individual boards are cupped, the floor waves in places, and squeaks/creaks regularly. I should note here that I personally did similar hardwood install elsewhere in the house, used a new plywood underlayment, and do not suffer these issues.
Aesthetically, the work was beautiful. The foundation that beauty was built on was nearly nonexistent. I regret I didn't push harder for what I believed to be necessary and also regret that it's taken me so long to post the review. Hopefully others have not suffered due to this.
I need to note that when I contacted Chris regarding the sink issue he was responsive and professional. I truly believe he wants to do good work. But the crew he has (had, perhaps) did not do a job that stood up to the quality bar he sets. This was evident in the recommended sink "fix" - just do enough to make it look good again, don't worry if it holds up. Unless Chris is on the jobsite full time I question if work of not-cosmetic quality is possible.
I am absolutely amazed at how quickly he got it done. Not only that, but the quality of the end product was outstanding. I'm a pretty detailed person and I notice defects, no matter how small. Chris definitely knows his way around the kitchen and is probably as detailed as I am. In his walkthroughs, he found some areas that the quality wasn't quite up to his standards, and he had his sub-contractors come back and fix it (or sent back to the cabinet maker to fix). I only had a few minor complaints/comments and Chris took care of them really quickly.
I highly recommend this company. In fact, now that I know how painless the actual remodel can be, I'm thinking of remodeling our bathrooms and wouldn't go with anyone other than Craftsman Construction.
