The work was well done, cleaned up after the job. Paid in full at completion. I would use him again for a job but I will say he's not for the homeowner who can't tell him specifically what he wants and how they want it done.
Side note: You'll have to call him a few times to get him to start on the project but once it was started he was good to go.

This was my worst experience with a contractor in my 17 years as a homeowner.
My neighbor and I chose him because he had done some (good) work for my neighbor in the past. His price was reasonable, so ? based on those two factors ? we hired him. Once we agreed to the job, it took him over 6 weeks to start the job -- even though he had promised to start "this week" at least 3 times.
During the construction phase, he decided (without notifying me) to place the new fence posts in different locations than the old ones. (Presumably, this allowed him to get away with leaving the concrete from the old fence posts in the ground.) In doing so, he dug into a bundle of six tightly packed sprinkler pipes -- damaging three of them.
To his credit, he notified me of the damage and attempted to fix it. However, his fix created ?U? shapes in the pipes. These ?U? shapes brought the sprinkler pipes within an inch of the surface and created places for water to pool in the pipes. Had I accepted this fix, the pipes would have broken with the first freeze. So, I asked him to re-do the fix with straight pipes.
Fixing it this way required excavating about 10 feet of pipe so there was enough play in the pipe to fit a straight pipe in. Because of the amount of excavation work involved, he refused to do it. So, I ended up burning a weekend and doing it myself.
Once I completed the pipe repair, I called him up and asked him to come and finish the job. (He had left the section over the broken pipes unfinished so that they could be more easily repaired.) He promised me on at least 3 different occasions that he would be there ?this week? to finish the job ? but never showed up to complete it. After enough broken promises, I ended up burning another weekend and finishing the job myself.
A couple of other aggravations to note:
? When digging out holes for the new posts, he didn?t haul away the (clay) dirt from the hole. He just dumped it onto whatever happened to be near the hole ? whether it was grass, bark dust, a flower bed, or a gravel walkway. This required about 4 hours of cleanup on my part as well.
? His cash collection practices are incredibly unprofessional. He wanted money up front to start the job (to pay for materials) and a partial payment at the end of each day he worked. For a multi-week job, I can understand, but for a job that?s supposed to take two or three days (and cost less than $3000), this seems excessive. On one of the days, he even called me up at work to ask me to call my wife to let him know he would be knocking on the door asking for a check in a couple of minutes ? even though I hadn?t had a chance to inspect the work. Very unprofessional.
To try and be fair, I will point out that the quoted price was reasonable (not counting all of the time I had to spend cleaning up after him). Also, the build quality of the fence itself is fine.
