1. The Contract: Where It All Went Wrong. We had a quote from Marty Seikel two years ago that he agreed to honor. When the fence was started, they had a different plan than what we had. This was very confusing! After sending prompt payment, he questioned why the amount I sent was so much less than what he was expecting. I sent a copy of the contract that was given us, and he said that he had a different contract from which he was working. He gave us a copy of the his contract, which we had never seen before, and it even had items written in with fresh ink over the carbon copy! He justified this by saying that he had another person (Mark) working for him who made bad measurements, and that he (Marty) had to go back and change details of the contracts Mark had made. He did not honor the original contract that was given us. Nor did he give us a copy of the new contract with the accurate measurements until the project was half-way constructed.
2. The Tear Out: Wide-Open and Incomplete. Marty verbally said that he would place the new fence before he tore out the old one because we were placing the new fence in a different position. This didn't happen. His crew tore out the fence on day one and left our yard open to anyone and everything for 3 months!
3. The Location: Wrong From the Get-Go. Despite having very clear instructions on where the fence needed to be placed because of city regulations, they started digging the posts in the wrong locations. I'm so glad I came home during lunch to see this and have it corrected before they poured the concrete. The crew was given no instructions from Marty where the fence needed to be placed to abide by guidelines.
4. The Fence: Proof is in This Terrible Pudding. It's already falling apart!!! The wood on the gates already fell off. Fence panels were split left and right because they put the screws in too tight, but the majority of the fence is constructed with nails, which has poor durability. Some pieces of wood were shredded and huge spikes of wood deviating from the fence line. Cheap materials were used, and gates were poorly constructed. One gate can barely be opened because the cantilever runs into the wood panels.
5. Buried Concrete Posts: The Icing on the Cake. After the mixup of the contract, Marty attempted to make things less expensive for us by tearing out an unnecessary portion of the new fence, which was in the original contract (at a great price!). But, they did not remove the fence completely because they just sawed off the metal posts and left the surrounding concrete in the ground. And then covered it over with dirt to make it look like they dug them out of the ground! We confronted Marty about this and he said, "This is how we always do it" and "This is in an easement anyways." By just sawing off the posts and leaving large pieces of concrete in our yard, we are inhibited from landscaping the way we would like.
6. Communication: Didn't Get Us Anywhere. The only slightly positive about this experience is that Marty answered the phone when we called. But every step along the way he proved to us that he didn't care about the outcome enough to do it right. He made excuses for the behavior of his company rather than owning up to what they did wrong. We are very upset, but realize at the end of the day, that people like this usually don't have things go well for them when they don't provide good business. Be aware before hiring them.
There were many heated calls between me and the staff at this company, but they never did anything to make things right...The contractor finally showed up on Monday but did not move the fence up after I had spoken directly to him and to other staff members about it. I called and spoke to the owner of the company and apparently the contractor flat out lied to him and told him I did not want him to move the fence line- when I had not even spoken to him that day! At this point I told them I would only continue with the fence if another contractor completed it.
I was shocked that the company tore down my current fence without putting up any type of temporary fence when my neighbors all have dogs. I spoke with one employee who assured me they could put one up, but then the owner stated they never do that and could not do it. Too bad my husband was able to put one up that night- apparently he should look into going into the fencing business!!
The fence finally went up on Wednesday, a week after it was promised. The fence looked nice; however, there were numerous areas where the bottom of the fence was over 5 inches from the ground! Kinda defeats the point of having a fence when your neighbors have dogs. My husband contacted the company and they came out and put a few bricks on the ground where there were the large gaps. I find it extremely ridiculous that this was done when I am spending $6,300 for a fence.
Additionally, the company tore down my neighbor's chain link fence on the side and then moved the back fence line up a few feet; however, they left the gap open so my neighbor's dogs can run behind my fence. It makes me wonder if the contractor did this out of spite or if they were new on the job.
This company came highly recommended, but I would warn people to stay away! The company knew of all the issues we had and did not do anything at all to try and make things right. I have no idea how they have been in business for so long, unless this contractor is someone new.
Staff were accessible by phone every time I had a question.
They completed the project on time as planned.
"(removed member name) Marty didn't realize you were being charged for the "tear down". Our installers wrote down they removed it, because they did, and our secretary billed you for it. She did that because they charged us to remove it, we charge the customer, and that is normal procedure. When you sent the check in, Marty did notice that you didn't pay for the "tear down" that was billed to you. He noticed that the amount you sent in was $400 short. He understood that it wasn't discussed prior to starting the job, so that is why he told his secretary to mark the account as "paid in full" and thought nothing further of it. Marty felt like with the working relationship he had with you, if there was a problem you would call. We have tried to contact you multiple times to let you know what happened, and you will not return our call... But you will write a review about us? Well regardless, we hope this clears things up. We appreciate your business, and of course we hope your enjoying your beautiful fence. Sincerely, Fence By Seikel And by the way... If Marty Seikel was trying to pull a "fast one" on you. We would not send you an itemized copy of the work completed."
"Thank you [members name], we appreciate your business! Marty Seikel"
I originally wanted an 8' fence on all three sides. They explained that they could certainly do that, but in their experience it made folks feel like they were in a compound. They recommended that I do 8' in the back and then waterfall down to 6' on the sides - they could not have been more right! The full footage of the fence is 2,114 square feet.
They came back 2 weeks later and sprayed a sealant on it so that it wouldn't turn grey with weather and keep the beautiful look of the cedar. I didn't know that existed.
I absolutely love the fence - it's perfect.
I did have a complaint on removal. When removing the two of the old poles, they broke them off and left them in the ground with jagged points sticking out of the ground. VERY dangerous for my kids. I saw one of them but did not see the other and stepped on it. Now I have to get out in the heat and get these out, just what I was trying to avoid by spending $1,235.
