After setting up an estimate time, he arrived and did thorough evaluation of entire exterior, then decided that the Masonite-like siding on our house would need to be painted by hand to be sure and seal against further weathering.
Pointed out a few places that looked like needed replacing, and came up with ball park estimate of what that would cost, with caveat that he would add to this estimate if more needed to be replaced as he proceeded through the job. Had multiple references in-hand on arrival, and had a very professional contract to be signed before the work even began.
Before he even started painting, after scraping and pressure-washing the house, he had to replace a substantial portion of the chimney siding due to missing diverter on the roof allowing water to get in behind the boards, over the flashing.
He then meticulously caulked and painted the entire 2-story split level house (30 feet high in some places) by hand, just using extension ladders with bracing, with help from an assistant only on 1-2 days. It was an impressive display, and took a little more than a week, due to some rain in the middle of the job.
It did cost a little over the original estimate, but much less than I would have expected considering how much extra work it took to replace siding and trim, and to get everything "just right" with the job.
I can honestly say now, that it is the best paint job I've ever seen, and I've done several myself. The house has never looked better, and I am sure it will weather better now than it did even originally. He is the personification of an old-world craftsman, and is meticulous in everything he does.
Cost may be slightly higher than other painters, but you will be not be sorry after you see the finished product, and experience the first-hand care he puts into his work.
