I brought my 6-yr old completely healthy Golden Retriever in for dental cleaning which I have done on a regular basis with the vet who previously owned Hammond Animal Hospital. This was my first visit with the new vet. I dropped her off in the morning and went to work returning at the end of the day to pick her up. She was still so sedated and lethargic, she could barely walk. Every other time she had had her teeth cleaned, she and my other dogs had recovered within an hour. I could barely get her to walk after a few hours at home. I called Dr. Johnson, told her what was happening, and she came over to my house. She administered a drug to reverse the effects of the sedation. My dog became violently ill within minutes. I had to rush her to Animal Emergency. After they examined her, the doctor came to tell me that she had never seen a dog so over-sedated in her practice and that they needed to keep her overnight and administer fluids to flush it out. When I picked her up the following day, my poor dog could not even swallow water or eat without immediately choking and vomiting it up. I brought her to another highly recommended veterinary practice and the vet I met there examined her, took x-rays, ran some tests and determined that her esophagus was so badly damaged during the intubation from the breathing tube for the dental cleaning that she needed to be brought down to Texas Aand M as they have doctors there who specialize in a procedure to open the esophagus up, much like an angioplasty. Upon arriving there and the doctors examining her, they reached the same conclusion - her esophagus was so damaged that without the procedure, she would not be able to eat normally. She had already begun to loose weight. I stayed there with her two weeks while they performed the procedure 4 times after which the esophagus had to scar over, then be reopened in order to allow her to swallow. That hospitalization, 4 surgeries, plus my expenses for the duration only cost me $6000. She can now eat, but I still have to make a pudding like mixture for her in order for her to swallow 3 years after this episode. I am reporting this only now as I just joined Angie's List and finally found a forum where I could air my grievance. I feel better already.
Ah, and the boarding. How about bringing your dog home with an undiagnosed and untreated severe yeast infection in the ear? I could smell it in the car on the way home. When I called - as soon as I got home - they denied he got it there! Did they think he got it in the 15 minutes it took to get him home? I would have understood that he could have acquired an infection while there, as they have and quot;playtimeand quot; for boarding dogs and it includes kiddie pools, which could mean wet ears and ear infections. But I do NOT understand nobody noticing the oozing and stinking. And I do not understand why he was not treated for the infection. And I do not understand the failure to admit a mistake. It's not like I was going to sue them. Why board at a vets if they don't DO anything if an animal gets sick on their watch? A few days after coming home, the same dog had ringworm, no doubt also a gift from boarding at Hammonds (given what the incubation time is for ringworm to show up). Needless to say, I did not return to Hammonds to treat either the ear infection or the ringworm. I now go to Veterinary Associates, where both Dr. Smith and Dr. Martin are just excellent. Because I had gone to Hammonds for 30 years, and received a significant discount from them (because I rescue many, many strays), it was a tough decision to stop using their services. But I have to place the well-being of the animals over saving money.
A couple of friends who used to go to Hammonds have also stopped, but I won't discuss their problems.
Note: Hammond Animal Hospital is no longer owned by John Hammond. He retired and sold it to Drs. Henson and Johnson. The quality, professionalism, and even commitment to animal welfare that once was so high is now gone. While this used to be one of the best veterinary practices in Tulsa, it is now at best mediocre.
