Small jobs welcome

"Alex was a very professional wood working artist, that gave me professional opinions on constructing a library wall shelving with a library ladder. It is the most beautiful piece of art. Takes up one full wall, and will be the finest home for my classic book collection. I would definitely recommend his expertise to others and will hopefully call on him again for another woodworking project."

"Very friendly, professional, and the Outdoor Living team of workers did an excellent job replacing the upper deck of our home. As senior citizens and after meeting with Steven Fletcher, it was comforting to know that we had chosen a company that we could trust."

"We had JP Contractors replace wood that was rotted on our house. Michael was very thorough when he came to do the estimate and found places that we had overlooked. From start to finish the job was well done. Customer service was excellent. Any questions were answered in a timely manner. The work was top notch. We did a walk through at the end , which I appreciated I would definitely use them again."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Board and batten is a type of wainscotting that uses wider boards that are placed vertically, and it has a much more rustic aesthetic than wainscotting. Common wainscotting styles are raised-panel, flat-panel, and beadboard. Wainscotting is more intricate and will typically use more elegant, subtle trims compared to the more farmhouse-inspired boards of board and batten styles.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

Wooden soffits, when properly cared for, can last between 10 and 25 years, depending on the type of wood and the climate you live in. Certain wood types will last longer than others, and you might want to consider the cost of replacing soffits when you break down the total project cost. While an initially higher-priced material might seem counterintuitive, it can make more financial sense if you don’t plan on moving.
