After finding Tailored Lawns & Tree Services, LLC on Angi, and reading their reviews, I had Clif Carter come out, walk the property and give an estimate. It was $6,500 to remove cedars, grind all the stumps, remove concrete, brick construction rubble and debris, level, grade and rake all roots, limbs and debris so sod could be laid. Day one: All cedars were removed and stump grinding was started. Day two: Stump grinding completed, told Clif Carter a stump was missed and limb debris were left that we needed removed. Clif stated the skid steer could take care of both of those. Skid steer driver asked if she could come 3 days later to level and grade, which was a Saturday. We told her we had to have all dirt work done by the following Tuesday for the trees to be planted. Clif Carter did not arrive with a rented skid steer until after 3pm on Saturday. Clif Carter and his wife left to do other estimates while their employee started work after 3pm on 1/3 acre. During the 3 hours their employee worked, she broke and buried the yellow rope marking the property boundary, removed dirt from the neighboring property, dumped multiple piles of roots and dirt on the neighboring property, dug down and exposed thousands of large roots that were not removed while stump grinding and hit the bucket of the skid steer on our metal fence destroying one 8 foot panel. When Clif and his wife returned we spent over an hour pointing out we could neither plant trees or sod. Clif's wife spent a lot of time trying to convince us we needed dirt brought in, that they couldn't level it the way we wanted, that they typically bury construction debris ect. Clif and his wife agreed to bring in a more experienced person to level the property. They said it was their employee and their responsibility. I got a call the night before Clif and the new employee were to come out. He said they would come out, but he wanted an additional $3,800. We advised him we would not be willing to pay for the damage that his previous skid steer driver did to our fence and property. At this point we knew Clif and his wife were not capable of completing what we needed done. We asked Clif to settle up for the tree removal and stump grinding. Clif asked us to let them come out and if we didn't like the result, we wouldn't have to pay him. At this point there was zero trust in anything they said. We informed Clif we were not happy with what they had done, and we would take him up now on his offer to not pay. Clif said he would have to get back to us in 10 minutes. Clif called back in 10 minutes and his wife joined the discussion. Clif's wife informed us of the following: She had recorded our conversations without our knowledge. She stated because we opened the email containing an estimate and a service agreement that we had a legal contract. (Nobody asked us to sign a contract and no one did sign a contract.) She stated that the additional $3,800 they were asking for was a "second contract". She stated we "didn't know who her family was" She stated she would put a lien against our house. Clif's wife was furious with us because Clif told us if we were not happy we didn't have to pay... and we said we will take that deal. This conversation then dissolved into Clif's wife fighting with him for not bidding the job higher, telling us repeatedly we got a **** of a deal. We paid the full bill, minus the $438 fence repair bill rather than having to deal with their workers, or them. When Clif and his wife came to our house to collect their money, my husband asked for a Lien Waiver be signed. Clif's wife would not sign the Waiver until the check cleared. We didn't trust them to get us a Lien Waiver as she openly threatened us to put a lien against our house. My husband was so fed up by this time, he had Clif and his wife follow him to the bank, and paid them cash so they would sign the Lien Waiver. One of the worst experiences with a contractor, but the first where someone has, without our knowledge, recorded our conversations, made veiled threats "you don't know who my family is", threatened to put a lien on our house and in the same conversation, both tell us if we don't like the end result.. we don't have to pay them. Our builder came to our rescue, pushing back one of his projects to have his contractor come out to fix the mess we were left with by Tailored Lawns & Tree Service. It turns out everything we were told couldn't be done by Tailored Lawn & Tree Service, was accomplished in a few short hours because they had the right equipment, experience, and business ethic. No fill dirt required.
