It took a few weeks for them to get here because of prior commitments but once they arrived they were here on time every day and were very pleasant to have working here. J.L has over 35 years experience and this really shows, he also has all the equipment to make the job go very fast and efficient. Overall I am very pleased with the service. If I had one gripe it would be that his original estimate was a little low. However in his defense this was probably the first vinyl fence he constructed and vinyl fences are quite expensive compared to the cheap wooden fences and there was some miscommunication between the supplier of the fencing and J.L..
In conclusion J.L Owens is a great landscaping service probably one of the very best there is. Just be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars more than the estimate.
I wanted to wait till the next major rainfall to confirm the work he did would allow the water to drain properly and it did a great job!
I can't comment on the price, he was the only one I contacted that actually responded and wanted the job, so I have nobody to compare his prices against.
I would recommend and use him again.
I had asked that the pipe replacement to the large drain be replaced with the same kind of pipe (pvc) but he used the flexible kind instead which I objected to when I saw it. He said it would work fine. At the present time I have'nt noticed any malfunction but I would have been more comfortable had he done it as I asked.
The other drain work went fine, but the ground leveling and sod placement was a total disaster. Any leveling done was with the bobcat and no further hand leveling with rakes or etc. was done. While they were working, I watched everything and noticed that before they laid the sod, they threw the fertlizer down like chicken feed which resulted in some places having way to much and other places having none. The ground was still very lumpy when he started bringing the sod in. I have red clay soil and it takes more work that other kinds of dirt to level it. When I called his attention to it he said that it would smooth out in time. (It didn't!!)
The sod was laid and no care was taken to lay it properly - also he had his son with him who was not a landscaper (trust me when I tell you that) and he was cautioned by the other people that he was doing it wrong - but nothing was done about it.
Final result was 1. Weeds in the sod of the kind/s I never had before. 2. Lumpy landscape and low and high places that I am trying to level slowly with bags of soil from the big box store. (The man who mows my yard has said he and quot;wouldn't even know where to startand quot; when I ask what his solution was.) I think that the only way to fix it right would be to start over from bare ground, but that is cost prohibitive and my backyard is very difficult to get access to with equipment.
I think part of the problem was while he was installing my drainage system he got a call from another customer asking when he would be coming to that job so getting my yard right was not a priority at that point because he was rushing to get finished so he wouldn't loose the other job. Even though the drainage system he installed seemes to be working well, I would never use J and L Landscaping for anything in the future.
