I contacted Rusty, I was able to send a picture and he gave me a quote right away. He sent me a document with the quote so I could turn it into insurance. He even provided a second, more detailed quote after insurance requested an itemized document. Also, Rusty is a good texter, which makes it easy to communicate at work or for a quick question.
Rusty and his crew showed up on time and I gave him the picture of the mailbox I was wanting built. I requested 2 different colors of mortar for the stone and brick and he said that wouldn't be a problem. He did more work/diagnostic to the footing of the mailbox than I expected. He dug into the ground and made sure there was 18" of cement from the last mailbox. He also extended the footing for the new mailbox.
Rusty and his crew were here almost all day. Rusty is the type of boss/owner who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty along side his crew and I respect that. The custom stone/brick mailbox I chose wasn't an easy task to build; it took skill to get the top portion right. Before the job was complete, he had me come take a glance at the mailbox to make sure it was to my liking. Once it was complete, he wanted to leave the supports overnight and he insisted I not pay him until the next day when he picked the supports up.
Rusty was a pleasure to work with and you can tell his is a trustworthy, family-oriented business owner (his dad and son are also masons).
I hired Mr. Hill to replace all the brick on the corner of my house (three exterior walls, roughly 300 sq.ft. in total). I had to essentially replace the entire corner of the house (all the way down to the sill plate) because of wet rot and termite damage. I worked it out with Hill for them to demo the old brick, allow me time to replace all the studs and wall sheathing, and then coordinate with him to come back out and install new building stone. His quotation was very fair and reasonable, even with all the extra hassle of trying to work out my own scheduling of the sequence. Mr. Hill was also one of only two contractors out of six who were responsive to my inquiries for this work.
Mr. Hill did exactly what he said he would do for me - which is what I believe is of the utmost importance in finding a good contractor. He provided me with a quote up front, he told me how long it would take, and he did his best to be flexible with me throughout the whole process of the demo work, my portion of the remodel, and his subsequent installation of the stone. His crew's work was of the highest quality and Mr. Hill is quite simply a gentlemen and good man to work with.
There was no payment required prior to the work beginning, and he didn't seek any payment until he finished. There were only a couple of times early in the process where it was difficult to reach him on the phone; HOWEVER, it's understandable knowing how busy and how highly in-demand he is. If you are looking for a great stone artisan and someone who is dependable, you can't go wrong by hiring Hill Custom Masonry.
Mr. Hill called before the job began, to check, if it was convenient to start the work. Mr. Hill and his men were prompt and very courteous. Mr. Hill and the men took extra time to get the color of the mortar as close as possible to the old mortar, which was 22 years old. They were careful to do each area and repaired some bricks, too. The clean-up was very good. I would recommend
them to others, who have mortar projects or repairs to be done and will use them again, if needed.
We found Hill Custom Masonry on Angie's List when we noticed some cracking on our porch and saw that we were losing mortar from the archway above our porch. Rusty called us back and asked for pictures of the archway so he could give us an estimate on the repairs. In the mean-time we had a couple of other estimates given by other brick masons. While we were waiting on the estimate back from Rusty (Owner of Hill Custom Masonry), one of the other masons left a voice mail on our phone telling us that he would not stand under the archway and we should put up caution tape and not use our front door until repairs were made; a real "doom and gloom" analysis. When Rusty called back with the estimate, we told him of the story from the other brick mason and Rusty said that he wanted to "come out and see for himself" what our damage looked like. Rusty was at our house the next day and looked at the column and archway and confirmed the price he quoted us over the phone ($5,000.00). We told Rusty that we were going with him to do the repairs and he stated that he would be back in about a week and a half. He also eased our concerns by letting us know that our column and archway was not going to fall down during this time-frame.Rusty was also very professional and courteous in the many phone and face-to-face conversations that we had with him. Rusty called a week later a said he was ready to start tomorrow. The crew started on Friday October 3. They tore down the entire column and the stone/brick above the porch. They had to increase the size of the footing for the column (part of the original problem) as well as add a brace to the inside of the column and a lentil to support everything. we decided to go back with a straight line of brick/stone instead of an archway, and Rusty was a big help in assisting us in figuring out what the finished pattern looked like. We gave Rusty some brief instructions as to what we liked and did not like as far as the pattern, but we gave him lee-way as to what the finished product looked like. He even repaired a couple of cracks in the mortar around our garage door. We are 100% satisfied with the work of Rusty and his crew and we would hire him to preform any masonry work needed on our house in the future.
Rusty was very forthright with options available to fix our problem and gave us the pros and cons with each option available to us. After considering his advise, we elected to replace the arch with a traditional rectangular shaped doorway. Our doorway looks great and we're very happy with his work.
We have a 25 year old patio with brick pavers and stacked stone walls and accents. We replaced a large part of the patio with concrete and needed to have numerous areas of the pavers leveled and repaired. We also need to have the stacked stone retaining walls and accent areas rebuilt. We called Rusty and within a day he had a crew of up to 5 men working on our site. They did a great job and we highly recommend them.
We would definitely use Rusty again should the situation arise.
Rusty had to make a support for one of the arches that was most deteriorated, and from start to finish he was professional, fair and excellent at making the repairs look like they were an original part of the house. Not only was I pleased with his work and the expeditious time in which he got it done, he then surprised me with a gift--he thought the brick would support itself with the repairs he was able to make and the steel beams would not be necessary--and he saved me OVER $1000 !!!
