The provider was excellent. Scheduling on less than a week's notice worked, and adding the OTR microwave to the job 3 days ahead of time was no problem. Very satisfied.

The doors are sticking. He replaced the boards with the wrong kind of wood. He painted over top of leaves and debris on the deck. He was to replace carpet in one room but the carpet got soaked in the rain. The deck is still half finished.

"I have copied below the Proposal given to this customer: 1,200 sq ft Deck: • Power-wash deck • Replace rotten, cracked, and/or missing wood – Estimate 15-18 deck boards • Repair railing – Replace 3-6 spindles • Replace 120' of 1x3 around edge of deck1 • Remove tree stump by pool & other limbs • Build railing or bench – Fill cracks as needed Laundry Room Floor: • Lay 100 sq ft of laminate flooring over existing flooring Miscellaneous Tasks: • Replace 5 fire alarms with battery operated ones • Replace 3 door knobs & dead bolts, with matching keys • Repair 1 toilet • Carpet – 16 x 20 / 36 sq yds / Indoor-Outdoor Carpet • Installation – New pad or keep existing? ****************************************************************************************************************************** Following is the work that was completed or the reason why it was not completed: 1,200 sq ft Deck: • Power-wash deck DONE • Replace rotten, cracked, and/or missing wood – Estimate 15-18 deck boards DONE - ACTUALLY REPLACED 25 BOARDS TOTAL AT NO EXTRA CHARGE • Repair railing – Replace 3-6 spindles DONE, PLUS REPLACED ADDITIONAL 16' OF RAILING AT NO EXTRA CHARGE • Replace 120' of 1x3 around edge of deck DONE • Remove tree stump by pool & other limbs DONE, PLUS 11 MORE VOLUNTEER TREES AROUND THE DECK AT NO EXTRA CHARGE • Build railing or bench – Fill cracks as needed DONE Laundry Room Floor: • Lay 100 sq ft of laminate flooring over existing flooring NOT DONE AS CUSTOMER CHANGED HER MIND ABOUT DOING THIS - DID NOT CHARGE CUSTOMER FOR THIS Miscellaneous Tasks: • Replace 5 fire alarms with battery operated ones DONE • Replace 3 door knobs & dead bolts, with matching keys DONE • Repair 1 toilet DONE - ACTUALLY REPAIRED TWO TOILETS AT NO EXTRA CHARGE • Carpet – 16 x 20 / 36 sq yds / Indoor-Outdoor Carpet DONE • Installation – New pad or keep existing? REPLACED ONE SQUARE FOOT OF BURNED PAD ONLY PER CUSTOMER'S REQUEST. THIS CUSTOMER WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PLEASE, EVEN THOUGH I DID MANY EXTRA THINGS FOR HER AT NO CHARGE. HER HOUSE & DECK ARE LITERALLY FALLING APART DUE TO NEARLY 20 YEARS OF NEGLECT & SHE WANTED TO BLAME ME. THE HOUSE SITS ON A 25% DECLINE, AND MOTHER NATURE IS PUSHING THE HOUSE DOWNWARD, CAUSING THE DECK TO BE PUSHED DOWNHILL. WHEN I ADVISED CUSTOMER HER HOME WOULD NEED MORE WORK, SHE STARTED CALLING ME NAMES & BECOMING VERY DRAMATIC. THE PAINTER, UNDERGROUND LAWN SPRINKLER REPAIRMAN, AND BOTH CARPET LAYERS WERE WITNESSES TO THIS BEHAVIOR. SHE ASKED ME TO LEAVE HER PROPERTY, ACCUSED ME OF STEALING HER PAINT (WHICH I DID NOT DO!), AND WAS VERY RUDE TO ME AND MY HELPER. IN MY EXPERT OPINION THIS HOUSE IS GOING TO NEED A LOT MORE WORK TO PASS A SALES INSPECTION - OPEN J-BOXES, LEAKY PIPES, STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT, & MUCH MORE. RESPECTFULLY, GREGG MATHIS HIRE-A-HUBBY"

Horrible, someone from Angie's list tried to help me to mediate with him and he refused to mediate, at least one thing I was able to do was to get him give me receipts. He charged me for all things that he did not do, he gave me receipts for parts to install my dishwasher but they were dated,it was a month after my dishwasher was installed. He charged me for a door, he didn't put in a door, he charged me to install a handy cap toilet which he did not do, I ended up spending about 3000$ to fix things he screwed up, not the things that he did, personally did that I could fix but the things I had to hire somebody to fix, It was terrible. He did a lot of things to try to keep me intimidated, he charged me 7 gallons of paint to do my kitchen cabinet, he didn't use them here. I guess his price was fine, he was charging me by the hour and hours to pay for the materials but the worst things he charged me, labor, were the things I told him not to do. He did pretty of the nice cabinets although he didn't do everything he was supposed to do, the quality of the cabinets is fine, he did put counters and that was fine, there few things that he did that were acceptable, he was punctual, he came when he said he's gonna be here.

REBUTTAL TO COMPANY RESPONSE:

Opening comments: I find it highly unusual that he chose to say he met with me AND my pets. For the record, I have miniature dogs, primarily Chihuahuas, plus two medium-large birds. I do not ask anyone to care for my pets although my housekeeper voluntarily assists me when she is here. I explained to Mr. Mathis that I was NOT looking for someone to come, do a project and then leave but I was looking for a handyman who could do a few things now and then do odds and ends over time that my housekeeper and I can’t do. He indicated that he understood. I showed him a number of things I wanted done eventually but stated that most were very low priority. Now, I will go over his list point by point. In some cases, his item detail has been shortened where it didn’t make a difference to context:
Item #1: Removed kitchen broken tile counter-tops from cabinets and replaced them with new handicap safe countertop. Response: He did this to my satisfaction although the only handicap issue was one corner on old counter-top. Work was for appearance, not handicap accessibility. Item #2: Built and installed new lower open storage cabinets in dining area and provided eight (8) denim lined wicker baskets Response: Cabinet was built to extend kitchen. Wicker baskets were provided however receipts for them were not included. Only issue with this was that cabinet blocked a duplex outlet. I requested that he bring electric cords for 2 power strips through a hole and onto the top where they would be fastened permanently. This cabinet was to hold a number of small appliances side by side which are rarely in operation at the same time. This would prevent a tangle of cords. When he did not follow these instructions, he brought the cords for the power strips through a hole and then left them hanging at the front of the cabinet. He did not fasten them at least out of sight and now I have an unsightly spiderweb of cords going down the front of my cabinet to loose power strips.
Item #3: Assisted appliance delivery personnel with installation of new customer supplied disposal, faucet, dishwasher, stove and refrigerator in kitchen. Supplied hookup parts as needed. Cleaned up area in garage and moved existing refrigerator there. Response: Mr. Mathis did install disposal and faucet in kitchen. Metro Appliance delivered and installed stove, dishwasher and refrigerator and supplied necessary hookup parts. Mr. Mathis was asked to clean up the area in the garage so that existing refrigerator could be moved there but the actual moving was in my contract with Metro Appliance. Mr. Mathis provided me with a receipt from Ace Hardware for “dishwasher hookup parts” and labeled with my name. However, the cash register date on the receipt was a full month AFTER appliances were installed. Appliances were installed prior to Thanksgiving but date on receipt is 12/19/2012. Had he decided on his own to assist the Metro delivery crew, that was his business. Since I had paid Metro for the service, it would be double billing to also pay Mr. Mathis.
Item #4: Supplied and installed vertical blinds in kitchen Response: Done satisfactorily
Item #5: Extensive cleaning of existing cabinets. Removed shelf paper that was covered and stained with rodent, bird and dog feces/urine, along with cockroaches. Response: Mr. Mathis insisted he was going to rip out the existing shelf covering, install new shelf covering and then put a rubber netting on top of that. I told him NOT to do that. The existing finish was cleanable and well-glued. My housekeeper was waiting until the construction mess was completed before cleaning the shelves and then putting everything back. His statements about the condition of the shelves were untrue and apparently included to be incendiary. Pest control company eliminated short-term mouse problem and was/is coming every two weeks for cockroach issue. Birds and dogs do not have access to inside of cabinets. Since Mr. Mathis ignored my request to leave shelf paper alone, he ripped it out leaving a sticky mess that will need to be sanded smooth.
ITEM #6: Sanded, prepped, and painted all cabinet areas, including laundry room. Response: No area was sanded or prepped. Although receipts show I was charged for 4 rolls of painters tape and 2 rolls of masking tape, only a couple of areas were taped so paint is on walls throughout.
Item #7: Measured, ordered, supplied, painted and installed new cabinet doors, with new hinges. Customer did not want knobs as they interfere with her wheelchair. Customer also personally approved the paint chips that were presented prior to purchasing the paint. She remarked the blue she chose matched her favorite cup and seemed well pleased. Response: I told Mr. Mathis to leave off the knobs because he had gone so far over budget that I was not going to pay for anything else. The paint chip Mr. Mathis supplied with the receipts he finally provided did match the cabinets but this was the first time I had seen a paint chip. It does NOT match my “favorite cup” and I immediately told Mr. Mathis that I did not like the paint as soon as a small space was painted. Further, I had requested semi-gloss paint for the cabinets. He used satin paint which is harder to clean.
Item #8: Customer sprinkled cockroach killing dust on all cabinets and counter tops on the day after they were all painted. Painter had to clean the entire again. Customer sprinkled the dust again the next day. We did not clean it up that time. Response: The “dust” (food grade non-toxic diatomaceous earth) was not on any painted area. Mr. Mathis notes that it was sprinkled the day AFTER painting so there should have been no need for painter to clean it.
Item #9: Measured, ordered, supplied, painted and installed new drawer fronts, including repair of all existing drawers. Response: Satisfactory except for the use of satin instead of semi-gloss paint and they were not sanded.
Item #10: Painted two doors including jamb and trim in laundry room and garage. Response: There is only one door in this area. The door leads from the laundry room to the garage. They painted both sides but it’s not two doors.
Item #11: Supplied material, built and installed ramp from laundry room to garage. Response: Satisfactory
Item #12: Supplied and installed new hot water heater to city code….Existing hot water tank was 31 years old and out of code. Response: Satisfactory
Item #13: Disposed of existing hot water tank, junk in back yard and garage, and miscellaneous debris in three separate dump loads. Response: The old cabinet doors were in the garage. He took those plus the water tank without mentioning it to me. I had donated them and people were scheduled to come get them. He knew I had done the same thing with the old stove and dishwasher. I belong to a group dedicated to keeping things out of the landfill. I don’t know what junk he may have taken from the yard or if he took something else from the garage. I had to call the people back who were coming to get the water tank and cabinet doors.
Item #14: Repaired, caulked, re-secured and painted front siding on exterior of house between two window frames. Response: Satisfactory
Item #15: Removed 5’ section of wall between master bedroom closet and bathroom to allow easier wheelchair access. Supplied and installed trim as needed. Response: Section of wall was 3’ not 5’ as it should have been. Mr. Mathis told me that he was going to extend bathroom counter into the closet area because wall was being removed. This was to give me a vanity next to sink cabinet. Instead, I now have an expensive formica shelf in dark area of closet that not only blocks ability to hang clothes in that space but can’t be used as a vanity. None of the trim was finished. New wood trim has not been painted. Raw sheetrock at end of wall is pieced with gaps that will have to have extensive sheetrock work to look decent. Floor has a 6” wide area of bare concrete wh

Built and installed new lower open storage cabinets in dining area, and provided eight (8) denim-lined wicker baskets. Assisted appliance delivery personnel with installation of new customer supplied disposal, faucet, dishwasher, stove, and refrigerator in kitchen. Supplied hook-up parts as needed. Cleaned up area in garage and moved existing refrigerator there. 4. Supplied and installed 72” x 80” vertical blinds in kitchen. 5. Extensive cleaning of existing cabinets. Repaired existing couch by raising it for easier handicap accessibility, as requested. 18. Arranged for lawn service to mow one foot high weeds & grass in front & back yard. 19. Numerous service calls during five month period for various things that were not on my scope of work, ie: adjusting garage door sensors so customer could get out for doctor appointments and repairing leaking plumbing fixtures that were eventually replaced. 20. All new large & small appliance brochures were left in a wicker basket on right side of shelves, as explained to customer. 21. All material purchased for these projects were brand new, in the box, and nothing provided was previously used in any way. 22. Painter reported customer passed out and fell to floor near the end of the project, whom she assisted and stayed with for a couple of hours until she felt better. Gregg Mathis"

"I tried repeatedly to explain to this customer that no amount of filling, sanding, or staining can cover up damage caused by five dogs or a shower that's too close to the vanity causing water damage. In all cases, the wood needed to be replaced but they chose NOT to do that, and instead, wanted the damage covered up to be the next owner's problems."

I called Greg early (Hubby for Hire) he returned my call an hour later. Anyway, I spoke with him on the phone told him about our problem; he seemed very nice on the phone said he would be over within the hour to look at the problem. Within the hour Greg arrived and he looked at the range and the cabinet immediately he explained to me and my husband what he would have to do. He told us the price he would charge and we agreed, Greg also explained about the countertop that my husband and son in law had previously chipped... that he could, if we wanted him to, order countertop and replace the damaged one that was done by my son in law and husband. He called and quoted us the costs of replacement and the cost of his charge which was hardly anything. Greg installed my range moved the cabinet over and hooked up my icemaker for me. Greg did all this in record time of approximately 3 hours... as far as I am concerned... Greg saved our marriage nah,,, he just got my husband out of the dog house and back in good graces with me; a NOW happy wife! Now if Greg could only come back and program the oven and range clock for us ... The overall cost was around $200.00 well worth it.

Greg was prompt , he did what we wanted him to do and did it in a timely manner We were impressed with his honesty enough to allow he and his helper Bobby to open up our house and work one day without us here.We had to reschedule because of an emergency health issue and he promptly rescheduled us. We are pleased with the work and we are planing on hireing him again for some more work. We very much liked him and also his helper Bobby. He is not cheap on price if that is your primary concern, but he charges a fair price. I think you can trust his word and he will do what he tells you he will do and you can count on him showing up when he says he will.

He picked up and paid for the two storm doors (I selected them) but didn't pass on the receipts to me so that I could get the tax credit. He was somewhat insulting toward me. I had asked him about replacing a shower faucet and he repeatedly told me that "this isn't like replacing a light bulb". His work was good; I just didn't like his attitude.
