Troy came out to my rent house property and called me with a quote. He gave me a quote of $1100.-$1200. if I went with the standard picket. But told me it would be $800.-$850. if we went with a larger 4-1/2" cedar picket.
I went to his website and really liked the look of the wider, cedar pickets and went with that option. I did quiz him by phone as I explained I was tired of being nickeled and dimed to death. I wanted a real quote. At this he emphatically assured me that the job would no less than $800. and no more than $850. At that I agreed.
His quote was better than most of the others as he said my posts were in great shape and there was no need to replace them.
A couple of days later we met at Home Depot and I paid for the supplies, as such I received his contractor discount, which I appreciated. He then drove straight to my house and began the job.
The job did stretch out longer than anticipated because he had other jobs he was coordinating. It was no more than 3 days and I didn't consider this a big deal.
My frustration was when he came back to me for $120. more on the job. It was not my fault that Home Depot charged him more than he was anticipating for the materials, nor that he over-looked potential complications with my fence installation.
My mistake was not getting the quote in writing.
Troy does great work and I will definitely use him again. But if you use him (and when I do again) I will GET THE QUOTE IN WRITING. Period.
And just as a side note: I had to call him and ask him to stop talking to my renters, as he was telling them various things HE felt needed to be done (that he could take care of) with the property. These were things such as tree care, other fence needs and the like. In turn, it was arming my renters with information to call me about. This was very frustrating as I am very good to take exceptional care of this property. The last thing I needed was my renters calling and telling me things I needed to fix. He did stop talking to them after I spoke to him about the matter.
