I was given an estimate to have a new stereo system and speakers installed in our van.  After work had already started they informed me that in order to make the steering wheel controls work I had to purchase an additonal component for $100.  I purchased the component.  They never were able to get this component to work.  After several months of research they offered to remove the component and refund me the $100.  My gripe is that had I known that my steering wheel controls would never work again I would have passed on the entire system.  The system sounds great and works fine.  Some of the fasteners which hold the car's panels in place were broken during the install and were not replaced so the panels are no longer properly held in place.

I took an old amplifier I had laying around in for them to install in my car. They said the amp was "stuck" in "low range" or bass mode. So I went to Petra (wholesale) and bought a new "db" brand amp and install kit and took it to them to install (I think it made them mad that I didn't buy the parts from them). I also asked them VERY SPECIFICALLY to go into each of my 4 doors and secure the crossovers for each speaker - and while they are in there: CHECK THE SPEAKER WIRING. I've been having some weird oscillations and I suspected inverse polarity. They installed the amp and secured the crossovers and told me everything looked good in the doors. However, it didn't help the strangeness.. and I thought maybe the speakers I put in when the car was new were "too power hungry". I worked on this more (below), but first I noticed some road noise coming from the passenger foot well. I investigated and - they had pulled off the plug that feeds wires through the firewall - and instead of making a cut-out in that plug, which would be appropriate, they just left the plug hanging to the side and ran my POWER WIRE RUBBING UP AGAINST THE SHARP SHEET METAL OF THE FIREWALL. Not only is this dangerous and could possibly short out the car's electrical system, but the gap left by the dangling plug let in plenty of road noise that came from under the passenger side dash. After discovering this, I went back and had them do the plug thing properly and gave them a good chewing out.
But my stereo still had some kind of warbling going on. I went back and bought ANOTHER amp from elsewhere. I installed that myself but it still sounded funny. I then replaced both amps with a bigger, more professional amp. Still the warble. For lack of any other ideas, I (myself) put sound dampening material (aluminum backed adhesive rubber mats) in the doors. On the last one - driver's side rear - I found the THE SPEAKERS WERE WIRED IN OPPOSITE POLARITY. The very thing that I hired them for initially and PAID $25 PER DOOR TO HAVE THEM CHECK. I went back and asked for my $100 back and they said that labor was non-refundable. I asked about their professionalism and told them that they were amateurs. He (the manager) said that they were working with equipment that they were not familiar with - because the stereo and amps that I purchased elsewhere. I asked, "ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH TOYOTA, BECAUSE THAT IS THE EQUIPMENT THAT YOU FAILED TO UNDERSTAND BOTH TIMES!!!" He stood their and took it, but refused to provide any compensation or anything. In my opinion, these people are amateurs and jerks.
