The best drainage system deposits rainwater as far away from your house as possible. This limits foundation damage but also helps prevent the discovery of inches of water from a leak when you look in your basement. For your gutters to function properly, you need downspouts (or a comparable alternative, like a rain chain) to carry water away from the roof and the foundation below. Without them, water would just pool in the gutters, leading to overflow and corrosion.

If you’re replacing your roof, you don’t need to worry about replacing your gutters as long as they’re functional and in good condition. Some roofers may recommend temporarily removing gutters to prevent them from damage during a roof replacement, but the right professional can reduce this risk. Replacing your gutters would only be necessary if your gutters are in bad shape and already need replacing.

There is no difference between heat tape on gutters and heated gutters. “Heated gutters” is a comprehensive phrase used to describe gutters that have heat-generating attachments. These attachments include heat tape, heat cables, or heated gutter helmets, and they can be a great solution for homes in frigid climates that suffer from ice dams.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
