Ed Whitney showed up promptly as agreed and quickly diagnosed the issues with my electrical panel. Only took 30 minutes or so and he did give me my Angies List discount of $10.00
I have used Mr. Whitney in the past to move some outlets, and I really like him. He is a no nonsense gentleman who is very knowledgeable. He appears to know the applicable code better than any other electrician that we have consulted since moving to Tulsa. Seriously, his knowledge is impressive.
This last project was not quite as successful. Usually, I meet with electricians and other tradesmen as opposed to my husband. Since my dad was a contractor, I have a little deeper knowledge in these areas, am better able to convey what I want, and can catch things when they are deviating from expectations. Unfortunately, I was busy, so my husband dealt with Mr. Whitney. This is probably part of the reason, that this project was not as successful as the prior projects. In many ways, Mr. Whitney was great. We needed the work done quickly, and he rearranged his schedule to squeeze us in the next day. That was kind of him to do.
As mentioned above, the work involved installing underground conduit and digging trenches. This is generally the worst kind of work, and most electricians are not particularly jazzed about digging trenches for conduit. Mr. Whitney made clear in advance that he would be using a ditch witch trencher as opposed to digging by hand. In retrospect, we probably should have chosen an electrician who would be digging part of the trenches by hand. Ultimately, the trencher went through several irrigation lines and the irrigation wire. Please note that this was not Mr. Whitney's fault. When using a trencher, you cannot tell where underground pipes and wires are until you have actually broken them. My husband and I knew the pipes were there and should have chosen someone that would trench by hand to better avoid these pipes and wires.
Our biggest concern is that ultimately the trenches were not deep enough to comply with code or even to begin pouring the foundations the next day. The landscapers were stressed about the delay and had to dig the trench deeper around the hardscaping to pour the footings. We had to hire another electrician to make the remainder of the trenches deeper. I guess it just seems weird to us that if you have a trencher and have already cut through the irrigation system, that you would not dig the trenches deep enough. However, Mr. Whitney and his helper put in a very long day, and it really was very hard work. It was dark when they left. At some point, you just hit a wall, so maybe they just hit their wall.
Should you hire Mr. Whitney? Heck yeah, he is really very knowledgeable. Should you hire Mr. Whitney to do dreadful trench digging work? Maybe not. I would hire someone else to do the miserable work, and then hire Mr. Whitney to come in and do the more technical work. As mentioned above, he is very knowledgeable.
I've had him out a couple time in the past for simple projects. I originally found him on Angie's List and so I thought I could trust his competency & integrity. He has always charged $85 an hour. Today, he arrived 1 hour late & he brought a helper. In the middle of the job, he ran out to buy a soldering iron because although he has one in his van, his van was in the shop. He was gone an hour which I was charged for. Although he left without finishing the job (several of the lights that were working when he arrived, were not working when he left) or not even offering to finish. He just kept saying that he had to go. For this he charged us $100 an hour. He never told us his price had went up until he pulled out his bill! It would not have upset me so much but the wiring is all messed up now. I wonder if he truly knows what he is doing and I know he is not a man of his word! I will have to hire someone to fix his mess ups. Believe me when I say that I will not be looking on Angie's List again!
."Yes we were late, but she called and I informed her the first job of the day ran over as many do.We arrived, two electricians not one. and started to work right away. I had asked earlier in the week if they had the landscape lighting connectors and they did. Unfortunately the connectors would not work with the wire on the new fixtures to the old wire. I could have used wire nuts, but this type of underground connection must be solid. I drove to store picked up a solder gun and supply's and returned. Matt the other Electrician stayed and worked very quickly. We took no breaks or charged for travel time. Removing 19 old fixtures, opening box and assembly of new fixtures, prep wires, soldered connections and taped up. Moved old fixture to another location and wired. New fixture was bad, so reinstalled old fixture back in location. In the back by the pool, the feeder wires were burned off, but they said it all was working before we came. Could not have been working. Wires were very corroded and damaged and I did my best to repair the burned off wire. farther down the line found another shoddy wiring connection. Told the Mister Homeowner I would fix it, but he said not to worry about it he would fix it. All of the existing underground wiring appeared to be grown into the root systems of many plants or damaged to some degree. we worked on 20 light fixtures devided into 4 hours that comes out to 12 minutes each, not including the splices to the main feeders.Packing up the old fixtures, and wearing white cotton gloves while working so as to NOT get finger prints on copper light fixtures. I reduced my regular rate of $85 to $75 for one electrician, and charged $25 for second electrician. The normal rate should have been$170 per hr. for two electricians. We regret that you were not satisfied with our work, and with my 45 years in the trade, I assure you I know what I'm doing, even if you don't. Ed Whitney"
