They sent out an installer to measure the door opening for which I paid $35.00. The measurement, however, was smaller than the original door (by about 3/4 inch), so I drove out to Lowes to talk to them about the mistake. They told me that it was not a mistake, that in order to replace a door, the new door must be smaller than the original door. That did not make sense to me, but I thought they were the experts so I said okay. Then they told me that the measurement was not "standard" so I would be charged more because the door would be "special order". I said, "But since this is a special order then I would like the door to be the same as the original door". Again, they said no because it would not fit. I ordered the door and hoped for the best.
When the door arrived about two weeks later, it was installed quickly--in fact in less than 90 minutes. I paid about $500 for the installation. That's when I realized that the reason they wanted the door smaller was for ease of installation and to save time.
The result is that it DID NOT FIT THE OPENING. There were huge gaps which are ugly. They sold me extra insulation to fill in the gaps, but this didn't take care of the cosmetic issues. In the interior, the door trim now must be set in about 1/2 inch. Trim had to be cut smaller. Because my walls were textured, now there is a 1/2 inch space with no texture that I will have to hire someone to correct. On the exterior, there were gaps between the new door and the brick so the installer used a ton of caulk and strips of cedar to fill in the gaps. I don't have a problem with the reliability door. I think it looks okay, but the installation looks very cheap. My suggestion is to make sure they order a replacement door that is the EXACT size of the door they pull out. It might taken them longer to install it, but the finished product will look much, much better.
