David M.
Oct 2010
Original estimate was for approximately $1200 dollars worst case. I had paid about $242 in advance so they could pay for materials that had been purchased, disposal of removed materials and I presumed for any labor costs up to that point. As the job progressed, additional complications to complete the job (according to Mr. Gomez) caused the cost to increase to a “shoot from the hip” estimate of first $2,100, then $2,650 and finally a mention of possibly $3,500 plus I still had to pay for a replacement shower door. At that point I called a halt to the project in order to get other opinions. Mr. Gomez wanted to have a plumber jack hammer out the shower drain for an additional cost of $550 and a second estimate came in at $350. (Incidentally the new contractor simply heated the drain collar with a blowtorch and it came right out). I called other companies and made an appointment to see what their opinions would be. About a week had passed while getting other opinions on this project when Mr. Gomez called late one evening wanting payment for the labor done which he considered to be a little over $200. I told him I would kick it around and call him the next day. I was still in the process of deciding who to use to finish the project but did not tell Mr. Gomez that information. Apparently Mr. Gomez wife Samantha didn’t like that answer and she called back a few minutes later demanding payment. In my opinion she was rude, overbearing, inconsiderate and constantly talked over me causing a lot of confusion about what was being said and responded to. Samantha had no first hand knowledge of this job, no first hand knowledge of the arrangements that had been made with Mr. Gomez, has never been to this job site and is a nurse in Tulsa (according to Mr. Gomez) with no knowledge of this construction job. I was considerably confused about who was running the business, Mr. Gomez or Samantha Gomez. After this conversation with Samantha I was extremely reluctant to continue using Mr. Gomez for this project. The next day I left a voice message for Mr. Gomez on his cell phone wanting to settle up on costs. Mr. Gomez did not answer that day. I left a message for Mr. Gomez the second day and Mr. Gomez returned the call. He said he would take back the supplies purchased and credit me the refunds he received minus the labor for taking the materials back to where they were purchased. He sent a person out to pick up the supplies (Shawn, I think is what he said) and that person said I owed and additional $16. I had already made a check out for $50 which I gave the person picking up the supplies.
