The instillation of my plumbing was placed into my bathroom as well as my tube and surround which is what they said they would do, but the tub, shower surround was not completed to code as stated on the contract. The tube was place 2 inches into the floor and the surround was placed onto the existing tile and never properly seated onto the wall as it should be. I was told ( a verbal agreement) that when their recommended finisher came out that they would come complete the work so I paid them the remaining of the contract. When the finisher came to look at the work, even she said that they didn't seat the tub and surround properly. She was to talk to them and work it out when they got started. After several attempt to come up with an affordable price for the finishing without repaying for what was to finished by Mr. Rooter, I decided to get someone else who had to totally gut everything that Mr. Rooter had done to my tub area. and additional $3400 worth of work. My original contrat with them began December 26, 2013. I constantly tried calling Mr. Rooter to get some type of answers to what was told to me including writing the manager on January 15, 2013 and calling two more times. By now my bathroom is tore up for almost a mont so I contract with another company to complete my work. In December I paid that complete bill with an understanding of a verbal commitment that they would be there to complete my work. As of today January recommended January 25, 2014 Mr. Rooter has not returned my calls, responded to my email or tried to contact me concerning my complaint. I paid good money for the work that wasn't completed.
They quickly discovered the source of my problem and snaked the drain. It was a considerable clog (note to self: no eggshells from now on in the disposal) and they had to snake it twice. He showed me why the clog was forming and recommended the bacterial solution for regular maintenance in the future. John also let me know that my plumbing didn't have enough pitch which also contributed to the problem. I asked him for an estimate for that work, which he provided. There was no pressure to do the additional service. He said it may be something I might want to in the future.
Because it was now 4:30 in the afternoon and my wife was by herself and with our son, I suspect that Mr. Rooter knew that they had us over a barrel. We were unable to call another plumber that late in the day. Mr. Rooter told us that the total cost of repairs would be over $5,000 and that we would also need to contact their "sister company" to have the basement undergo water mitigation services.
The "sister company" salesperson arrived at our house immediately to say that they would need to clean up our basement. What they didn't tell us what that "clean up" meant to gut our finished basement. We're now still working on fixing it. Thanks a lot.
The Mr. Rooter estimator then said we needed to replace our sewer pipe all the way to the sewer main because there were roots in the sewer line (yes, they wanted to replace the entire sewer line and not just clear the roots out of the sewer line), & replace all of our galvanized plumbing to copper pipe. They gave us a 2nd estimate well over $13,000 to replace the sewer pipe and this was in addition to the $5,000 that we already paid to have a 1 foot section of PVC pipe replaced.
Finally, Mr. Rooter said that we would have to have the water main line replaced and, when I said I wanted a 2nd opinion, Mr. Rooter said that I would have to get another plumber right away... and they shut off our water access until the other plumber came later in the day. This leaves me to believe that Mr. Rooter was hoping that we would have been forced into accepting their extremely high estimate to repair a water line that was probably broken by the plumbers as they were breaking up the concrete in our basement to fix the sewer pipe.
They never showed us the broken sewer pipe so I am still doubtful that we ever had a broken sewer pipe and I got a 2nd opinion from another plumber who did not agree that replacing all of our galvanized pipe & that replacing the sewer pipe because of roots might have been excessive.
I complained to the manager at Mr. Rooter (Brian) the following week, who said that it was "too bad" and that "we shouldn't have signed" the Mr. Rooter contracts on a Friday evening. But, if Mr. Rooter came at their agreed time of noon on Friday we would have been able to get another plumber to come and fix the work. And, if Mr. Rooter would have told us that the work wouldn't have been completed until Monday then we also wouldn't have used them. Briain then encouraged me to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. How nice.
I was expecting to have Mr. Rooter come and snake our sewer drain because I still believe that we only had a clogged drain. But that clogged drain turned into a complete nightmare with many costly things done to our basement that I still do not believe were ever needed in the first place. Mr. Rooter may have billed us an exorbitant amount, but I hope this review gives someone the caution I wish I had when I called them in the first place.
The people who work at this particular Mr. Rooter should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Furthermore, the Dwyer Group (the franchisor of Mr. Rooter) should consider looking into instances where franchisees are engaging in questionable practices to pad the bill. Based on my experience, I will never work with Mr. Rooter, or any of the companies in the Dwyer Group, again. I'm sticking with a local plumber going forward. BUYER BEWARE!
