PROS:
Craftsmanship was top-notch
Project was completed very quickly
CONS:
There were a number of minor issues along the way, including:
* Billing discrepancies (which Joe Sr and I cleared up over the phone)
* Some resistance trying to obtain the finished drawings before signing the final contract. When you spend thousands of dollars on a project and need it to look a certain way, it's important to know exactly what you're approving BEFORE you approve it. I ultimately did get the drawings emailed to me, but literally hours before I was to come in and sign off.
* Day 1 of Construction began on a Friday morning at 7 AM. Our neighbors DO NOT like to hear construction noise prior to 8 AM and WILL call the police (which I found out the hard way when I first moved in). I spoke with Joe Jr on the phone and asked if they could please not start until 8 going forward. The following Monday they once again started at 7 AM. I was not thrilled I had to tell them again (from that point on they did abide by the 8 AM start time).
* Debris: on more than one occasion, I found trash in the yard, nails in the driveway. I even found an old wasps nest scattered across the driveway one day. I asked Joe Jr to please have his guys pick up after themselves going forward. They did.
* One of the lights was covered by soffit. Joe explained that the guys who installed it may have thought it was an old outlet that was no longer in use. It could have been an honest mistake, but i still think common sense would tell you, especially when there's a light and a cover and it matches the other four lights that weren't covered by soffit, that this was in fact a working light. So I'm not too convinced it was an accident. Nevertheless, Joe Jr assured me he would fix this. However I decided to do it myself over the weekend.
I guess the issues above are somewhat typical when you hire subcontractors to do the work (when Joe or Joe Jr were on site, things ran much more smoothly and professionally). And I know these are relatively minor issues, but collectively they add up. Thus I may consider a different company for future rennovation projects. It's a shame because they built such a beautiful porch.
