We contacted Kirkwood about installing a whole-house vacuum system after seeing a system demonstrated at the Home and Garden show. We were making a 1500 square foot addition, as well as remodeling the older part of our home, and thought it was an ideal time to make the investment. When we visited the shop in Springdale to discuss the product, we were impressed with the demonstration. We had always loved our Dyson vacuums and thought they did a great job, but Kirkwood claimed that the Dyson vacuums had only a fraction of the suction that the Kirkwood system did. Our home is in northern Kentucky and we were referred to the Cold Springs location for the installation.
The gentleman that came out to assess our project was extremely polite and knowledgeable about his product. We felt very comfortable that the installation would be handled professionally.
Unfortunately, we have had problems with the system from Day 1. The collection unit in the basement had to be replaced because it kept blowing apart, causing the contents to s*** all over. The tube that is supplied to the older part of our house would not pull out without us pulling it to the point we were breaking out in a sweat. It would not retract without us forcefully pushing it back in place. When we tried to use it, the tube would collapse and almost completely lose suction. We ordered an extra set of accessories for upstairs which were never delivered with the original installation. After about two months of follow up phone calls, we finally had to go and pick them up at the store ourselves.
To be fair, I have to admit that some components of the system work really well. We installed a mini port in our laundry room and it is super for cleaning out the lint traps, or sucking grass or dirt off your shoes when coming in from outside. The accessories (the beater bar attachment, hardwood floor attachment, furniture brushes, crevasse tool, etc.) work very well and are convenient to use.
Kirkwood did replace the upstairs tube with a lightweight, more flexible tube, and it does retract properly. However, it kinks every time we use it. The suction on the upstairs part of the system is only okay now, even if the tube is not kinked. I would not guess that it out performs our old Dyson. The downstairs part of the system seems to work better than the upstairs. We got an under-counter outlet that you can sweep dirt into for our kitchen. My expectation was that I would be able to sweep into that outlet's general direction and the suction would pull the dirt into the outlet. You actually have to more-or-less feed the dirt to the outlet.
The straw that broke the camel's back and prompted me to write this review was when my husband recently complained that when he was insulating our basement, he discovered that the joints for the pvc pipe that the system's tube retracts into appears never to have been glued together.
I think that we have another call into Kirkwood in our future, and I hope that we can work out the bugs. But after living with this system for some months, I would have to confess we are pretty disappointed overall. I feel terrible about it because I know my husband meant this to be a real luxury, but it has turned into a big hassle and we feel like we made a bad investment.
I love the system and am glad I had it installed.
