In 2015 I entered into a contract to have my Wyoming, Ohio wood shingle house painted by Master Touch Painting and Restoration Inc. When the painters arrived at our home to begin prepping the house to be painted, I was informed by the owner, Ferri Vargus, that we had lead paint on our trim of the outside windows which was not part of the quote. He advised that there would be an additional charge of $1200, which I ultimately paid. Shortly after the painting was completed, I noticed several areas where air bubbles formed on the shingles. I also noticed that only part of the frames and trim on some windows were properly completed. After numerous attempts to contact Master Touch to fix the issues and extend the warranty, the only way I was able to get Master Touch to return and fix the issues was thru a complaint on Angie’s List. In July of 2017 I again noticed paint bubbling and chipping on shingles, so I sent emails to Master Touch to have them come and fix the problem. When I received no reply to my email, I called their office numerous times and left voice mails, as no one answered the phone. I do not know if this was due to a staffing issue, or that caller ID showed who was calling and they were screening their calls. On March 3, 2018 I again contacted Master Touch and finally talked with someone at the office who told me that someone from the warranty department would contact me to set up a time to meet with me. On June 1, 2013 Ferri Vargus showed up at my house unannounced with a paint company representative. I was not home but my wife pointed out the areas where the paint was bubbling. Mr. Vargus proceeded to remove some of the bubbled paint from my house, leaving parts of the bare shingle exposed. He handed my wife some of the paint that he removed and told her that it is not covered under warranty because of the type of shingles we have on the house was not holding the paint. He did not attempt to repaint the areas where he removed paint and left, leaving the house in worse condition than before he arrived. Note: In a side conversation, the paint rep also stated to my wife that Mr. Vargas should not have removed the paint, or he should have at least repainted those areas where he elected to pull off the paint. If what Mr. Vargas is saying is correct, then it appears that he did not prep the house properly for the paint he intended on using. Master Touch supplied the paint; we only provided the color that we wanted him to match (same color from previous paint job). It should also be noted that this was the first time in the 40+ years we have lived in our home where the house was spray painted instead of painting by brush. The bubble issue also never occurred after previous paint jobs while the paint job was still under warranty. When I tried to contact Mr. Vargas, I only got voice mails and left him messages requesting to talk with him. In an effort to receive a return phone call I even requested an estimate to fix the areas in question- although I believe Master Touch should be responsible to repair the work still under warranty. Towards the end of June 2018, Mr. Vargas sent me a text that he would be out of town for the 4th of July and would set up a time to meet with me upon his return. However, after nearly a year now, Mr. Vargus has yet to contact me and additional areas on the house are now bubbling and pealing. Master Touch Painting has been very difficult to deal with. They ignored my calls and emails for a year in 2017. In 2018 they waited 3 months before getting back with me, but then showed up unannounced, when Mr. Vargas knew I would not be home, and ultimately stated that that paint issue is due to my shingles, when it is more likely due to poor or improper prepping the house for the paint, using the wrong type of paint for our shingles or applying the paint improperly. Mr. Vargus has refused to answer my calls or to follow up to correct the problems. We did not supply the paint. We provided Mr. Vargas a paint color that we wanted him to match; however, he told my wife that the problem was with the paint—which he provided. Mr. Vargas examined the house prior to offering a quote to paint and was fully aware of the surface that was to be painted. As a professional, it is his responsibility to provide the proper paint and to apply the paint in the correct manner so these issues would not occur while the paint job is still under warranty. Per our warranty, I feel that Master Touch has an obligation to fix the problems that now exist and provide the proper paint and paint application, so the problem is corrected.
Response from Master Touch Painting & Restoration, Inc
"Firstly I would like to correct the dates in this customers review. We painted his home in 2013 not 2015 with a 4 year painting warranty which means the warranty originally ended on 5/9/2017. I could go back and restate all the communication we have had with the customer via phone and email but as we are now 6 years on it seems a mute point. What I would like to make clear is that in 2015 I did go out and meet with the customer after he made us aware of some peeling areas, we did a thorough walk around the home and I showed him that the paint that was peeling was because the wood underneath was bad. I told him that that was not covered under the warranty because the issue was with the wood not with the painting however as a courtesy I agreed to touchup these areas and I extended the warranty for another two years while being very clear with him that if the same problem occurred again it would not be covered and the customer signed this. As expected the same problem did arise again. I did visit the customer's home with our Sherwin Williams representative not because I did not want the customer to be home ( I would have preferred had he been there as the information he says the rep gave his wife is totally inaccurate) but because I had been waiting for a couple of weeks for the rep to be available when they called me to let me know they had an opening I rearranged my schedule so I could go. The rep agreed with my assessment that the peeling and bubbling was due to delamination which is when the wood is damaged and the separation of the wood fibers causes the paint to peel. The only way to fix this issue is to replace the wood underneath. It has nothing to do with the paint, the preparation work or the method of paint application. If that was the case the issue would have been all over the home and not just on the one side that gets the most exposure to the elements. Repainting would not solve the issue, the areas will continue to peel until the bad wood is replaced. At this point there is nothing more I can do. We do carpentry repairs and can replace the wood but honestly I do not wish to do any further work for this customer as he just does not seem to understand that the issues with his home are due to poor maintenance prior to when we painted. We did everything correctly in relation to prep work and painting , I had the Sherwin Williams rep go out so that he had a second opinion. I touched up after the first instance of peeling which I did not have to do. I have explained in detail now on numerous occasions to the customer that the issue is with the wood."

Contact via email was quite successful and their price was much better than the other bids.  Our condo association prescribed the stain to use from Sherwin Williams.  The problem came up after the fact, that the stain has changed formulas over the years and did not cover well at all.  The final appearance looks, "undone".  We had to inquire if the deck was stained at all.  The problem was not with the company, but with the stain, however, we would have liked to known that there would be an issue before it was done.

Things got off on a good foot however Master Touch did not complete the work to our satisfaction. We began looking for a house painter in spring of 2015. I literally had 10 companies out to the house for estimates, most of which had excellent reviews on Angie's List. Master Touch stood out because they showed up on time, had a very competitive price and were responsive to my many questions so we chose to hire them. At the beginning Frehier (Owner) and Hazel were very good about returning calls and not requiring full deposit since we booked one year in advance in 2015. Paint color selection also was very smooth with good attention to detail. I should note our house was peeling a lot especially on the side and front. Frehier did not commit to a 'brand new' home but did state his team would do a thorough scraping and paint During the scraping process I was surprised to hear from Frehier that we all of the sudden needed to have a full house prime which would have added almost 50% to the cost which was never mentioned at the beginning. He claimed that this was needed to protect from the old paint delaminating from our house. This seemed like a big change so I asked other companies and even the paint store he shops at. All folks said that, if scraping was thorough this would not be required. I shared this information with him and he all of the sudden agreed but then threatened that he couldn't honor a full warranty without the additional work. This was unsettling and felt unprofessional but we chose not to do the additional priming. The house scraping and painting was completed in about a week and looked great from the street. I did a couple walk arounds and commented on a few touch ups but overall it looked good. The touch ups were immediately addressed then we completed out payment in full. Within 2 weeks I noticed paint peeling from the home in multiple locations. This seemed odd since Master Touch had just completed the work. I provided this information to Frehier on May 2nd. He said he was very busy but would take a look. As of June 26th I had still heard nothing. After many many emails, phone calls, text messages Frehier got back to me. He stated that that we did multiple inspections which is correct and that I was seeing delimitation and he would not honor the warranty. He then mentioned that he 'gave me an option' (full priming) but I did not chose to do that work. I presume this meant the extra priming that would have increased cost by 50%. Fresher did tell me over text that he 'did not promise a new house'. Eventually after lots of pestering Frehier agreed to hone this under warranty. I asked I'm to let me know when he came out so I could show him the spots. He asked me to mark them with tape which I did. He came to the house house without telling me which is OK but didn't leave any time for discussion. Last week he sent guy out to fix the spots which he said were touch up on 7/25. This work did occur however many calls and text messages during this repair were not answered. There are still many spots I can peel away with my fingers. I decided to not push it any further as I am no longer getting any response from Frehier. I pride myself on doing due diligence with contractors which normally pays off with good work and experience and I enjoy recommending folks to friends and coworkers. I realize Master Touch has a great rating on Angie's List but I cannot go along with the crowd. Once I have some free time I will be finishing the job myself that Frehier chose not to complete despite what seems to be pretty straight forward. I would not recommend hiring this company unless you don't need much prep work and desire an inexpensive paint job.

Good, estimator was prompt, communication up front was good. Painting was postponed due to weather and would of liked move communication of punctual date but once the team showed up, workmanship was good.

The work went well.  We were very pleased with the quality.  Frehier was very concerned that we were happy with the results.  After the work was completed, we had a misunderstanding on the price, but Frehier was patient and we were able to work it out.  My husband and I were impressed with Frehier's ability and creativeness to resolve our misunderstanding.

Some of the work turned out acceptable after two tries and my having to point out obvious issues. Some surfaces were not properly prep'd and were not acceptable. In one instance an area that was obviously rotted was caulked over and painted. This was corrected but as a change order. The owner was very disrespectful and held my credit card information without my approval. This left us in a situation where we had to pay for work that was not satisfactory and accept less than professional behavior from him. I will never use this vender again.

"We would like to reply to this customers review and address the comments which have been made. The customer states that her electricity bill was 4 times the cost of the previous bills amount and says it was because of our sprayer. The power required by a sprayer is the same as using a radio and the power is only used when you have your hand on the trigger which would in no way account for such an increase. In relation to the pressure washing I do not know of any painting company that brings their own water to do pressure washing and again the usage would not be a huge amount. We have been painting houses and pressure washing as part of the preparation work since 1993 and nobody has ever complained about their water bill - not once! The additional cost was for re-glazing the windows. The house is over 100 years old and all the window glazing was gone, we discovered this during the preparation work and brought it to the homeowner’s attention and got her approval before we did the additional work. This was to allow proper adhesion of the new paint and also to prevent heat loss in the home. We did a final inspection with the customer and took care of some touchups straight away – the painters are only human and there may be misses due to things like stopping to get more paint or even the way the sun is shining. We give a five year warranty on our work and if the customer had called us back to let us know that she found some misses – we would have taken care of them without problem – if she did not notice them during our final inspection then you can see why a painter could have missed them also. Our estimate stated “Previously painted areas” and then listed all of the areas that were included. The banisters were not included as an oversight by our estimator however the customer never brought it to our attention before she signed the contract and we did paint them at no charge. The screens were also not included as usually the screens are metal or vinyl and so they do not get painted. As this is an older home they are wooden screens and as the customer decided to change colors they then needed to be painted. The column was painted where it was visible – we cannot be responsible for removing bricks that should be moveable. Our painters work hard and yes they did sit at the outdoor table to have lunch – I apologize if this was upsetting usually it is not an issue with the homeowner, and yes they are painters so they do not wear clean suits to work but there was no damage whatsoever to the furniture that was well used and very old. In relation to the house – yes the pressure washing was done at the beginning of the job however paint brushes and rollers need to be cleaned on a regular basis throughout a job and for that you need water, this is the case on every job and again has never been an issue with a homeowner. As you can imagine all the “Issues” mentioned in this review came as a surprise to us, when we did the final inspection the customer was happy and paid the final balance without issue. We are disappointed that the customer feels they have had such a negative experience with us and we feel these comments were not justified."

They did a super job. Pricing was reasonable and they came when they said they would come. He came earlier and looked at everything and gave me an estimate. The initial contact was very prompt and professional. Estimates for 4 properties were prepared very quickly and sent via email which was very convenient. Since we did not have prior experience  with this company we decided to commit to a single property to see how things would go.

Scheduling was a bit of an issue due to late summer backlog and fall rain. That is to be expected, of course. The only concern that I had was when the pressure washing and subsequent staining was scheduled I had little to no confirmation / communication. Since this is a property in which we do not reside, but rather rent, it was important that we communicate with our tenants and that could have been smoother. This was a new deck that had no previous stain and the color selection was also not very smooth although, we were able to get a color that we selected  prior to them staining, so it all worked out.

The job was done well / as promised and a follow-up touch-up was completed for the steps. We are too late in the year to complete the other 3 properties, but will consider using Master Touch again.

Nice guys, and they were punctual. But they took a paint chip to match color from the wrong pat of the house (they painted a sunny back porch and took a paint chip from a shady section that is a different color. Didn't sand some damaged wood before painting. Two areas of really sloppy painting, Won't use them again.
Response from Master Touch Painting & Restoration, Inc
"Hello [removed member name], I am very surprised and disappointed to see this review. We did a final inspection with you and there was no mention of any of the above concerns. I advised [removed member name] when we did the estimate on the exterior that we do not usually do touch ups only full painting services because you will be able to tell the difference between the old and new paint and the exterior area was very faded due to sun exposure and low quality paint- he agreed and said that he was more concerned about protecting the areas that had been exposed due to recent construction and did not want to paint the entire area - just touch ups. The reason I took the sample from another part of the house because the paint on the porch was faded and chalky and the paint store cannot do a computer match on a sample like that. In relation to two areas of sloppy painting - they guys covered everything with plastic when they were working and you never mentioned this while we cleaning up or when we did the final inspection. I am not sure what you are referring to on the "not sanding damaged wood before painting" either , again nothing was mentioned during the inspection. The reason why we do final inspections is to ensure that the customer is 100% happy before we leave but if the customer acts like they are happy with the jobs and pays there final balance without any problems we can only assume that the customer is happy so I am sorry that this not the case. You know you have a two year warranty on the interior work . In relation to the exterior work there was no warranty because we do not usually do touchup work for this exact reason - it never looks 100% - as I explained to your husband however I am more than happy to come out to touchup the exterior areas again if you supply the paint and your color selection as I showed you the color sample before we applied it.Honestly the only way it is going to look good is if you paint from break point to break point which I had advised your husband in the beginning and this way you would also have a five year warranty from us and a 25 year warranty on the material against peeling, fading, chalking and blistering. If we need to clean up any paint or address any other issues we can take care of that too now that we know about it.Please contact our office once you have an exterior color selected and we can get you back on the schedule. I can assure you that if we knew about these issues during the inspection they would have been dealt with before we left your home because our goal is always to leave our customers 100% satisfied so that they will entrust us to take care of their homes for years to come. I would hope that having read this explanation and calling us to come back out you will reconsider the grade you have given us and the hard work the guys put in on your home including making the extra effort to match the three different colors of white on the interior trim of your home so that you wouldn't have to paint the doors, only the frames as you wanted . We really care about customer service that is the reason we have been in business 21 years. It doesn't matter how small big or small the issue we take pride in our work and we want our customers to be able to take pride in their paint job. We look forward to hearing from you so we can address your concerns as soon as possible Sincerely Frehier Vargas Owner"
