J P Flooring Design Center
About us
We are an Ohio-owned and operated Cincinnati flooring store. When we opened over 30 years ago, we started as a small carpet installer and have grown to one of the region’s largest flooring companies – offering carpet, vinyl, hardwood, ceramic tile and custom area rugs. JP Flooring now has a 20,000 SF show room but retained many of its original employees. Our success is built one client at a time, offering quality products, expert installation and competitive prices. JP Flooring Design Center is your destination for selection, service, and style.

We used JP Flooring at the recommendation of our contractor that we were using to do the floors.
Pros: Installation part went well. They needed to replace the vents after the initial vents came back a different color and they did that without any issues. I would recommend the flooring installation group.
Cons: Working with the client contact Teresa. When we first started, we had to wait a long time to get a quote because they said their computers were down. This was the last part we needed before we started our kitchen process. I had to call back a few times to try during the next week and just get a quote. I called a few times to get ahold of Teresa and it was hard enough just to get her to call me back. Since the contractor (who was great), had recommended her, we were willing to shrug this off.
When the work was completed, we were initially quoted that the removal of tile would take two days and it actually took 2 hours. I called our contact to true up the final bill for what went over and what went under the initial estimate, I was told that we could not get a credit for the difference in hours because they pay the estimate by the job and not the difference between the actual work and initial estimate. After I expressed my disappointment (this over charge amounted to $700), and said our work with most contractors was based on an estimate and we true up at the end (and that is how I deal with customers in my work), I was told "I do not know how you set up contracts at your work but I assume you are not in the flooring industry." Although I disagree with them, it is their policy to pay by the job for installers and you get a set rate no matter how hard or easy it was. I was more disappointed with their customer service. I feel like if the installation time went significantly over the estimate, JP Flooring would charge you.
If you ever used JP Flooring and were charged more for installation, let me know because I have an email saying they never charge more.
To sum up, while I feel that the installers did a good job, I feel like you can find a lot of other providers on Angie's list that can give you the same installation at a lot better service level.
The installers were on time and did a great job - were neat and took care not to scrape anything when bringing the 15 foot roll up the stairs and down the hall.
The most difficult job was a thorough sanding of the floors as the original finish had been baked-on at a factory. There were fairly deep bevels along each board which collected dirt, bits of food, etc. The cracks were a challenge to keep clean. We were told by some flooring contractors that sufficient sanding to remove the bevels was "impossible." JP's estimator stated it was very possible. The refinishing crew was determined to remove the bevels and continued sanding until the floors were smooth and every detail of the wood grain was visible. I chose a very light stain - as I prefer to see the "artistic" look of the formations and colors in the wood. Every visible tiny crack was filled. The floors were given a satin finish with three coats to give a rich, durable apperance. The hardwood flooring surface now looks new to me and ever so much better than when we bought the house.
I can't say enough about the crew - their kindness, professional work ethic, promptness and talent was worthy of an A+ . One evening we returned home to take a "peek" at the progress. They had not only cleaned the work area, but had put the sanders and other equipment in a closet where they were out of sight.
Of course, there was dust. . . I would say a tiny layer of dust was on the items we had not covered. We did not tape plastic to cover our cabinets, etc. nor confine our open spaces from other parts of the house because the crew did not recommend it and it truly wasn't needed. We did cover our sofas with sheets, but the small amount of dust residue was easy to eliminate. I happily recommend this company.
JP Flooring performed three services: 1) they provided an estimate 2) they ordered the material and 3) they installed the flooring. The estimate was insufficient, the material was backordered for weeks and the installation was horrendous.
During the initial meeting with the estimator we discussed two flooring options. We received a quote for the 1st type (the Arvada "floating" floor) and determined it was too high. We asked repeatedly for a second quote for traditional flooring (sand, stain, seal) and never heard back. This put us weeks behind schedule (of a much larger project) so we eventually settled on the original quote. The flooring was then backordered, which put us further behind. Finally, a single installer arrived and I can only assume he was poorly trained. He didn't properly prepare the subfloor (i.e., seal the holes in the floor) before pouring the leveling compound. It leaked through the floor and went all over the basement, onto duct work, our furnace -- basically everything the was in the basement beneath the kitchen. We had to have the HVAC folks come out and determine if it damaged the furnace. The leveling process was so poorly done, that rather than correct the uneven floor, it actually made it worse. Due to the nature of the ongoing construction, the new floor was covered until cabinets were reinstalled, etc., and that was when we realized the extent of the problem.
JP Flooring NEVER provided any customer service during this process. There was never any apology or follow up to discuss the mess in our basement. Not a phone call. Nothing. It took A MONTH for them to return and clean up the basement. It took weeks longer for them to finish the transition pieces to try and correct some of the leveling problem.
There are many flooring contractors in Cincinnati. DO NOT USE JP FLOORING! They put us weeks behind schedule, had non existent customer service, took weeks to order our product. We went to their West Chester location the first week of June and selected our flooring, and they didn't have the product available until mid-September. Much of the interior work on our house had to wait until they finally showed up. And then they did a horrible installation job. Our general contractor said we were not the only client to complain to them about JP Flooring.
We own a 100 year old home, and in the last decade we've had many contractors work at our house. This is the worst job we've ever had done at our house and the only time I felt warranted to write a negative review. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.
Overall, there are areas for improvement. The design center showroom is very nice, plenty of carpet to choose from and the salesperson was helpful. Selection to installation took about 3 weeks (the carpet was in stock).
Installers arrived about an hour early, moved furniture, removed old carpet and finished laying the new carpet by the early afternoon. Very fast. Perhaps too fast.
1) Left a large dent in the drywall from an "oopps" moving the furniture.
2) Almost everywhere there was a tack strip, there were tacks coming through the carpet. Not just a few places, many. On the stairs, around columns, at transition areas, at the baseboards...everywhere. You could not walk the room in socks without drawing blood.
To the store's credit, they responded to my complaint by sending one of the installers out the next morning (7:15AM) to beat down the tacks with a hammer.
The sales experience was not so good. I had an appointment with salesman. After waiting 30 minutes walking around store, he finally came out.
He knew is carpet products well and steered me to some options that were good for my purposes and within budget and was friendly about it. When I asked about getting padding with a moisture barrier he said they did not really have an option. I pointed out that there was an option on their display rack. He played it down, something about preferring for liquids to go into padding rather than get trapped in carpet the layer to dry. Ultimately, I went with this better padding with moisture barrier for my application.
Getting someone out to measure was not fun at all. For at least two weeks I called asking what the next steps in the process were, but never received a call back. The salesman simply did not return calls. Eventually he asked for my email which I provided the first day I came in on their information sheet.
Perhaps it was just my experience with this one salesman, but based on this, I would never go back or recommend these folks. There are plenty of other places to do business. It could just be that they were really busy and the standard wait was 2-3 weeks. Had that been communicated, I would have been ok with it, but not returning numerous calls is not acceptable no matter how small the job. I felt that was my business was not valued.
