Animal Boarding Kennels
Quick Version: We just boarded our two dogs for about 7 days, and while the owner is certainly a dog person, the business is totally lacking in professionalism. Multiple “perks” of their boarding services were not followed through on, and were met with countless excuses instead of any form of apology. We will not be back and discourage anyone else from doing so. 1. Blankets returned covered in urine from accidents early in their stay (despite on-site laundry) 2. Office smelled strongly of urine and feces upon pickup, raising questions of cleanliness 3. Lack of follow through when photos and updates were promised during the day and only sent after expressing concern for the welfare of our pets I got the distinct feeling this was a business created on a whim as “dog people” as a hobby instead of a professional business that knows what it is doing and cares about providing quality customer experience. Long Version: We were excited to find Buckeye Select and the phone conversation regarding their services (in addition to the standard feedings and potty breaks) included a dedicated texting line for updates and photos, the ability to bring our own blankets and dog toys, and an in house laundry in case of accidents. These promises proved too good to be true. First, we requested an update and photos, which we were encouraged to do multiple times both when booking and dropping off (not expecting an immediate response, knowing it was busy and there are a lot of tasks involved in this line of work). Eventually we were promised that photos were taken and would be sent, but those photos never came. At the end of the day we grew concerned that those photos were never sent (leading to concern about our dogs’ welfare) and continued requests were met without response. After several text messages it took a facebook message to get a response, and then a long pseudo apology listing all the reasons the photos were not sent (in a very unprofessional manner). While the point of using a kennel during our vacation was to reduce the anxiety and worry about the care our dogs were receiving, when we went hours without receiving the update or picture that had been promised, we certainly felt a sense of panic, worried that something had happened to the dogs. During an attempted apology, the owner was overly defensive, and essentially expressed frustration with being bothered by us and advised that updates and pictures were a convenience and “sometimes things come up”. Needless to say we were left speechless and more concerned than made to feel better about the situation. Secondly, when we arrived in the office to pick up our dogs, the office had a strong urine and feces smell. That was met again with an excuse that some sort of bag with the smell was forgotten the day before. (side note: In our minds, forgetfulness is not a good quality when caring for multiple dogs requiring feeding, potty breaks, and clean environments). Finally, we had to request the blankets that we had brought for the dogs to use during their stay. That request was met with uncertainty that she would be able to identify which blankets were ours among those of other customers, but was able to find them after we described what we brought (note: no indication of effort to keep track of our personal property or concern that it be returned). She finally returned, and placed the blankets into garbage bags, explaining that the dogs had urinated on the blankets and that “you’ll need to launder these”. This was especially frustrating as we were advised via text message days prior to picking up the dogs that they had an accident on the blankets, but were also assured that “we’re gonna get those washed”. We may have understood if this had happened the day before we picked them up, but based on earlier texts, and also confirmed by photos sent, these accidents occurred early in their stay. We find it hard to believe they couldn’t have been washed (which was promised via text and a service that was described as part of the boarding experience). Instead they sat, covered in urine with other soiled blankets, while our dogs used much smaller blankets provided by the kennel, defeating the point of bringing the blankets in the first place. Not to mention we were then returning from vacation having to immediately do laundry in the hope of saving the blankets, not confident they can be salvaged. All of this met without apology, but lots of excuses. Overall I left feeling like the service provided was as if done by neighborhood kid who was dog sitting as a favor, and who could be expected to be given some leeway and slack in mistakes, instead of paying clients at a professional kennel. There was no ownership of their mistakes and a total lack of professionalism. I got the distinct feeling this was a business created and managed as a hobby instead of a professional business that knows what it is doing and cares about providing quality customer experience. This was an incredibly stressful, frustrating experience. I’ve never been more relieved to see my dogs and to have them back with me. I am beyond disappointed with the service provided by Buckeye Select Kennels and will not be utilizing their services in the future, and would discourage others as well.
Response from Buckeye Select Kennels
"This reply is longer than i anticipated because our business is based on word of mouth therefore, we feel we must thoroughly address any negative reviews. I would like to address a few of your concerns and things that Mr [Member Name Removed] had claimed.. The comment of starting this business on a whim, is not so. We have been open for 10 years and have a very good reputation, as proven by the number of repeat clients. When you picked up, Bonnie and AJ were clean, happy and content. As for your blanket concerns....Rachel told you that we currently do not have a dryer and that you probably wouldn't want to leave your own blankets because they may get soiled and we cannot launder them. We actually discourage people from bringing their own bedding. With 32 runs, we switch bedding out almost daily and that would be next to impossible to remember whose blankets are whose. However, you were told, via text that the blankets would be washed, and that did not happen. For that I do apologise. The day you are talking about was Wed the 26th. At 248, you requested an update and asked for pics. I'm attaching the messages between us that evening..... You will notice several apologies throughout our texting. Also, I don't see or recall, at any point, expressing frustration whatsoever. The fact is, you requested updates and pics and they were delivered to you, within 6 hrs along with this.... "My apologies for not getting these to you sooner. I had some things that had to be taken care of today and then I ended up having to drive 7 hours, up to Akron and back. Please rest easy, knowing they are safe, comfortable, enjoying the play yard, and eating well. Have a blessed evening" ,Also, there must have been a misunderstanding, the kennel phone does have texting capabilities but we do not have a "dedicated line"" for pictures and updates. Photos are an "over and above service", that we are happy to provide, when requested and time permitting. As for the office smelling of urine, the dog that was picked up before you came, peed in the office, and then the fact that your blankets were soiled was a lot of the issue. Although it is a kennel...we do our best to keep the drains and runs clean and fresh smelling, at all times. You then said that made you concerned as to what the kennel area was like.....we have an open door policy, that no matter when you drop off or pick up, you are welcome to go back and see their area. We have nothing to hide! Bottom line is: Your dogs were very well cared for happy clean and content upon pick up. We sent you pictures of your pups 2 different times during their 7 day stay, over Christmas, and allowed you to pick up on Sunday during closed hours. We may not be as professional as you would like, but we are animal lovers that take complete loving care of your pets."

Buckeye Select Kennels deserves 10 stars out of 5 : )
The loving and caring environment is exceptional!
They go out of their way to make certain that the individual needs of
each pet are met. When you leave your pet with Karen, there is no need
to worry...they are with family.
We had a dog with a great deal of anxiety--and when it was time to leave Buckeye...he didn't want to, he wanted to stay.
We love you Buckeye Select--you are our God send

We felt very comfortable leaving our pup there while we went on vacation. We were given different ways to contact them if we felt necessary since we would not be able to make phone calls or texts. We didn't feel the need to check in, knowing they have an on-call veterinarian and keep a close eye on the animals, treating them like their own. I like knowing that our dog gets some interaction time with other dogs if need be--she just wants to play! (she probably had more fun there than with her normal schedule!) The custom hours are an extra $10, but when you want your furbaby, it's nice to know they live on site and can accommodate when possible. I felt the rate for boarding was very resonable, and competative in relation to kennels that were closer to us, considering the time and care our pet received. I'd use them again.

Buckeye Select is the only kennel we take our dogs Buddy and Simon to. Both of our dogs are rescues and because of that Simon has some issues with strangers and is often fearful of new places and people but he and Buddy both go to Karen with tails wagging, so excited to see her. I love that they get to go outside so much and that Karen takes time to give each dog some individual attention. She is also great about letting us call or text to check on the dogs and see how they are doing. We use the kennel a few times a year and can enjoy our vacations because we know our boys are well taken care of.

I LOVE Buckeye Select. My 3 dogs are my furry kids. They are always well cared for and Karen is always available when I call to check on them. I have dogs that have some special needs and Karen handles them all with grace... from medications to food issues. I have visited many kennels in the area and Buckeys Select is the only one that I will take my dogs to. The prices are more than fair and the quality of service is excellent.
