"Thank you [Member Name Removed], I enjoyed working with you to make your deck safe and enjoyable. Let me know when you want to look at the front porch again."
Because our deck is on the second story and has no railing, it is unsafe to use.
In summary, they have been very unprofessional and a huge disappointment. I highly do not recommend them to anyone.
"I apologize that the weather has delayed your project but it is delaying all outdoor projects. We discussed that your project had to be done in stages when you contracted. We are adding onto your existing deck therefore, the old rusty rail had to be removed, the framing had to be extended, the new brick columns built and then we can finish the new handrail between the columns. I discussed initially with Pervis that the masonry work would be subcontracted. It has rained or been muddy almost everyday and the mason has gotten behind. Furthermore, I believe we have returned all messages made to my office and your review of my company is unfairly negative since the circumstances are out of my control. We are working to complete your project as weather permits. I assure you a beautiful deck addition when complete. Again, I'm sorry for the weather delays."
All that frustration with starting and the slowness of the work aside, they did a great job and we are very pleased with the final result and have spent much time enjoying our beautiful deck and patio. However we probably would not hire them again because of the frustration we experienced.
I'll get the bad news out of the way first, though: Custom construction is nothing like buying something from the big box store and bringing it home; there are just too many unpredictable variables in play, especially around timing. Due to weather and delays on previous commitments, our project took five months to start and three months to complete, and the waiting became frustrating. Once our crew started our project, though, they were almost exclusively dedicated to it through its completion, and made steady progress. We paid a quarter of the total cost at the initial signing, but I'd suggest negotiating that payment down to shift more of it toward the work once it is actually in progress.
Archadeck really specializes in creating beautiful, interesting, and functional customized designs, and the company has an incredibly rich experience and design portfolio to work from. Tim listened really, really well to our desires for the project, how we wanted to use it, and the problems we had experienced with the existing structure, and presented us with a design that addressed all of that as well as suggesting features and options that we hadn't thought of. Ultimately, the cost was at the upper limit of our budget, but the design was very compelling. As a sanity check, we also got a quote from another large local home improvement builder, and got similar numbers for what we felt was a much inferior design -- basically a prefab Florida room and deck. The price still feels a bit high, but as a premium for excellent design and quality it seems well worth it.
Actual construction went pretty smoothly and steadily, but seemed slow and meticulous at times. The two-man crew generally paid careful attention to detail, including the quality of materials, and I was very impressed with their expertise and workmanship. They accommodated all of my requests along the way, and made sure that everything was done the way we wanted it. In the end, everything appears to be very well made, using high quality materials, and is backed by strong warranty from a strong company. We are absolutely delighted with our purchase.
