Our refrigerator had slowly started to lose the ability to cool over a month or so. Items in freezer were starting to thaw. Scheduled an appointment with closest appliance repair shop that could see us in a timely manner. Service tech came to house pretty much on time as scheduled. I informed him of the situation. He proceeded to remove the panel in the freezer that covers the evaporator coil. He quickly surmised that my compressor was no good because the coil was frosted over about halfway up. I asked him what it would cost to replace the compressor. He informed me that they did not install compressors and that I would have to call another appliance repair place that did. I was dumbfounded. Why had they bothered to accept the call if they couldn't do the work ! I wrote the service tech a check for $75.00 (trying to give him the benefit of a doubt) and proceeded to start calling to schedule another service call. I found a company in Toledo that could replace the compressor if needed and scheduled an appointment. Being that I had some knowledge of the workings of air conditioning systems in homes, I was skeptical of what the first service tech had told me regarding my compressor. I informed the second company of my concerns and they worked with me to diagnose the problem and fix it. As it turned out, my refrigerator had lost most of its refrigerant. The compressor was fine. Once the leak was located and repaired and the system was recharged, it has worked just great!
Description of Work: Service tech removed coil inspection cover in freezer and then diagnosed a bad compressor just by looking at the frost pattern on the coil.
