I called R.A.M. because they were right around the corner from me, it was early in the morning and I was freezing. I told the man who answered the phone at 6:00 am that I didn't have heat, that I have oil heat, and that when I hit the reset button, I smelled oil but the furnace wouldn't kick on. He said that wasn't good and that he would be over about 8:45 because he had to take his son to school. (Bonus points - business is family oriented) He ended up running a little late, so he called to let me know he was going to be a little late. (More bonus points - very much appreciated!!)
He and his brother and other family members showed up (it's a family business) and took a look at the furnace. I had no idea how old the furnace was, and since it was an oil furnace, I was afraid they didn't make parts for them anymore. After looking at it for a minute, the one I talked to on the phone came up to tell me that the furnace was old and pitted and needed to be replaced.
He explained that they had a new oil furnace in stock and could have the old one out and the new one in that morning. The price threw me - oil furnaces are a whole lot more expensive than gas furnaces, but I told him to go ahead and replace the furnace. (I never had priced an oil furnace so I had no idea how expensive they were, but several people have since confirmed that the new oil furnaces have a lot of EPA stuff on them which makes them a lot more expensive than a gas furnace - but still a lot cheaper than converting to gas).
While they were replacing the furnace, a friend stopped over. R.A.M. had the old furnace out and it was sitting in the driveway. My friend looked at the furnace and said - wow, that's shot - it's all pitted! (More bonus points - an independent party verified that the furnace was indeed, shot.)
By noon they had finished! The new furnace was in, had been tested, and was running well. The basement was totally cleaned up - you would never have known any work was done down there that morning. (Major bonus points!!!!) The old furnace was taken away and they had installed a new, digital, thermostat in my living room.
They were all very nice and they took the time to explain things to me (what they had done, why, what to expect with the new furnace, etc.) They asked if I had any questions, and when they left, it looked like they had never been there (except for the brand new furnace). I would and HAVE recommended R.A.M. to friends and neighbors. In fact we talked about adding central air in the future. If I decide to go ahead, R.A.M. will definitely get the job!!
