When they came to put the roof on, only one spoke some English they were all mexico, there was no fore man on the job there from Rich Roofing nobody at all Rich Roofing showed up just this crew some of the things there were suppose to have here I was the  fore man it turn out, I was suppose to get new sky light as part of the job it did not show up luckily I saw that and I know whatever but the biggest thing was I had roof vents electric roof vents in my roof and I no longer wanted them in there and I had different kind vents put outside and when I told the guy the one who spoke some English he knew what I was talking about but anyway I told him I wanted to keep those electric fans my son had an out building that he wanted to use them in and then also some of the long runs I wanted to keep that cause he also wanted use those cause they was nothing wrong with those so anyway occasionally went out they were working here I check on that, I kept remind them I wanted to keep them he had them nicely pile when they finally left I looked out side  and they were gone and the guy that spoke a little bit of English was the last one was kind of getting his truck ready to leave and I ask them where there went and he just blew me off, what they did they took them, they took them with them for strap even though their mine, they actually stole my property okay so anyway and so I called Rich Roofing about it I was really ticked I called Rich Roofing and the guy at Rich Roofing told me well you know they really don't make that much money. So they said that they scrap it and I said that's my fault, why don't you pay them more you know they wouldn't steal my property.

They were very concentrated on their job, taking 2 layers off, prepping the roof, then the new shingles.  The supervisor explained everything to me, asked if I had questions.  Our yard was totally cleaned up when they left. The paperwork part was easy and efficient.

After getting the quote it was 2 weeks later and still had not gotten a date of service. I called them several times over the course f a week because I was always told let me check and I will call you tomorrow. This never happened, I always had to follow up with them. After finally getting an install date a contractor showed up unaware of what of what the job was and did not have the proper equipment. Another gentleman showed up the next day and finally got the job done.

Crew cam early in the morning and was done by noon - incredibly fast. They dropped a screewdriver and broke a glass table but compensated for loss. Had some leak problems after but they were fixed.

They did a good job.

"I must apologize for the delayed response time. We have been in business since 1964. We do try to manage all our clients expectations well, however we carry a large waiting list and sometimes people can get frustrated with the lead time. I do hope that the rest of their experience was a great one!"

Got off to a rough start as the crew came from Indiana daily to install roof.  Had problems with metal delivery and misplaced deliveries in their yard.  Contract was signed in Aug 2011 but due to problems with deliveries, workers, lack of scheduling, project was not complete until Dec 30, 2011.

Since then provider has had a major re-do on employees, procedures and customer service.  I have called with a problem of ice caps not being installed as per contract and their attention to the matter was immediate due to a new project manager, Doug.  This company has addressed all items and questions I had and were always professional.  Those employees and procedures that had caused problems for me in the past are now gone and I am more than pleased with the product and dealing with the new personnel.  I would recommend this company as doing a top-notch job now and always addressing the customers concerns immediately. Doug has been a great improvement to the customer service and customer satisfaction area.

As for price, I was not thrilled with the price and felt it was quite high but I am well pleased with the roof and nowadays, you are lucky to get what you paid for!  I have a guarantee that will last the lifetime of the structure so I can't ask for more.

I would recommend provider due to the changes that have been made and believe they have a great product which should last longer than I will!

We had a bad experience with them because they were refusing to work with our insurance company. We also did not appreciate having the day labor that they brought in and promised that they would not bring in. They were pretty hard-nosed about their product, their price and putting the employees where they were supposed to be. We specifically asked them not to have day labor and they hired them anyways. They actually showed up a day early to do the work and we were having a party.
Response from Rich Roofing
"We are sorry that this homeowner feels they had a bad experience. In reference to working with the insurance company, this file contains extensive emails and phone conversation notes between our representative and the homeowner's insurance company. The scope of loss provided to the homeowner and replacement value given by their insurance company was below industry standard and did not cover the amount of work that was needed. The total on this job was $13,305.87 and only cost the homeowner their deductible. It is unfortunate that they have rated the price to be so poor, however we offer to do insurance work at the rate negotiated with the insurance company. This is especially helpful for homeowners who did not anticipate a roof replacement and receive a new roof for the cost of their deductible, rather than the contract amount. In response to the "day labor", we subcontract our work. All subcontractors are required to carry insurance and worker's compensation, as well as a signed agreement and waiver of lien for every job. The labor warranty given to the homeowner is from Rich Roofing and any warranty work is covered by us. We do not consider our subcontractors to be "day labor", we aim for long term relationships with our qualified subs."

The insurance paid for some of the services. He was very responsive. He came out and looked at everything that we needed him to look at. He came out multiple times. He also looked at the shutters because there were issues with the shutters. He worked very hard with Statefarm because they were being very difficult. He went out of his way to get it taken care of.

Had a roof vent leaking into the house. He climbed on roof to mainly inspect for hail damage. He said company is effective at handling insurance claims in order to repair hail damaged roofs. He saw the rubber seal on vent wasn't in proper position so he adjusted it. He suggested I replace another vent where rubber was dry-rotted. He said it was easy to do myself and would be $600 approximately if the company sub-contracted the work. I repaired it myself. There was no charge and he was friendly and informative. His main objective, however, was to find hail damage severe enough to require new roof.

Rich's salesman was very helpful before we sent in the first half payment. After that things went downhill rapidly.

1. They selected lower grade cedar siding with at least 4-5 knot holes per board. Our current siding is virtually knot free. The contract stated to match the existing siding.

2. They didn't use the correct siding board height

3. They didn't match the paint correctly and only applied on coat of paint

4. There were large nearly 1" gaps in the siding in almost every row.

5. They tried to fix the gaps after the fact with massive amounts of calking.

6. They also didn't reattach the flashing on the chimney. It was loose on every side and still isn?t replaced.

7. They were dropping loads of shingles on the roof during construction. As a result, we had significant cracks in the plaster in our ceiling.

The worst part is that they lied to my wife and I after the fact. Treating us like we were idiots. First they stated that there aren't multiple grades of cedar siding and what was provided is the best they could get. They argued that cedar is a natural product and they can't be responsible for the wood quality. They also stated that the paint didn't match due to fading. Over time the paint should eventually match as the sun fades the lumber. They even stated this for the sides of the house without any direct sunlight. They also stated that large gaps in siding are common and we should just deal with it.

The most they would do is offer to add another coat of paint. They said with enough paint it would cover up the issues.

I am now getting another estimate to rip out the shoddy incompetent work and replace all the new siding.

Response from Rich Roofing
"We do not argue this customer's complaint of the cedar siding. Unfortunately the siding that was installed was knotty and did not match. The cost for this job included a full roof replacement, installation of solar power vents and siding repair. We offered to correct the siding for the homeowner and they opted to find another company, therefore we deducted the siding amount from the total job. This review was made 2 days prior to our representative meeting with the customer to discuss any issues. The flashing was corrected during our quality control inspection and we were not made aware of any ceiling cracks. The possibility of that is specifically mentioned in our pre-start checklist, which requires a homeowner's signature. It states that "customer has been informed that normal vibration from the work may cause plaster or drywall blemishes, or nail pops, which are beyond the contractor's control." This possibility can be made worse with cathedral ceilings or lack of attic space. We sincerely apologize to the homeowner for any mistakes that were made through the process."

How'd it go? Badly.
First of all I've learned the Rich Roofing does little, if any, actual roofing work. They use their local name/address to contract for services, then subsequently sub-contract out all of their work. I had several  issues that needed to corrected during the installation due to poor workmanship.
All of the ones I noticed at the time were fixed only after I pointed them out to my job supervisor. He had already looked over the roof and did not mention the issues until I brought them up. One issue I did mention, the amount the shingles overhung the gutters, was not corrected. My job supervisor told me that was now "code" and had to be that way.
The next year I had another company come out to correct what I thought were gutter problems. I was told the gutters were fine, the shingle overhang was allowing water during heavy rains to overshoot the tops of the gutters. After several calls to Rich Roofing, and only after threatening to file a complaint, did I receive a callback.
Two guys came out, acknowledged the overhang was a problem, and in addition, mentioned other deficiencies. One gentlemen actually kept shaking his head in disbelief at the quality of the job. They told me my job supervisor had been dismissed due to poor job performance. Did anyone from Rich come to check my roof to see if my roof had problems as a result? No.
The two guys left with the promise call me back in a few days to set up repairs. I never heard from them, nor would they answer my calls. I emailed both of them about the matter, and one of them, apparently not familiar with "reply to all", sent me a copy of his email to the other guy. In it, he mentioned other roofs with problems that he "doubted were being taken care of".
Weeks went by and after more threats of action on my part, another gentlemen who seemed genuinely concerned came out. Not only did he acknowledge the problems I was now aware of, he pointed out several other issues that would require replacing a large portion of my "new" roof to rectify.
As this was during the winter, he said we might have to wait until spring to make the repairs, but he would be in contact with me. Spring has come and gone, my calls to this guy went unanswered and have not been returned. He apparently now longer works there.
I've been told my 30yr roof likely not under warranty due to improper installation. Rich Roofing apparently had no  intention of voluntarily fixing my roof.

I'd like to update my experience.   Rich Roofing has just completed a complete removal and replacement of the entire defective roof instead of attempting repairs. My job foreman and job site supervisor were very professional and interested in rectifying the aforementioned problems. The crew that came to my house this time were very skilled and did an excellent installation, many times better than the crew that originally installed the roof. This was what I was expecting originally.

I am very satisfied with the work done this time and only wish that this was the way it had been done the first time. I would give them an "A" for this experience, but overall raised my grade from an "F" to a "C" simply because the ordeal listed in my original complaint should never have occurred, especially the time it took to be resolved.

One day in April, 2012, the shingles and associated materials were dropped off in my driveway without notice by Rich Roofing.  I called to ask them what was going on.  The new person (who replaced the person I originally worked with the previous year) stated that he left a message on my phone earlier in the week that they were going to drop them off.  His statement was not true since I received no messages on my phone from Rich Roofing.  This was the start of the downward spiral.  This person said that they were planning on starting the job the next day.  He said he knew nothing about the agreement to call first to set up a time based on my schedule with the patio cover.   I was NOT happy because the patio cover was not yet installed (which was my original plan).  I contacted my paito cover company and they said that they could work to install the patio cover after the roof was completed.  I reluctantly agreed to allow them to install the new roof the next day.  I came home from work the next day and they were busy working on the roof.  None of the workers had Rich Roofing shirts on.  In talking to the foreman, I found out that they were subcontracted by Rich Roofing to do the job.  The foreman was the only person who spoke English (the other workers spoke Spanish).  I discussed by expectations with the foreman and he said that they would do a good job and be finished the next day because they did not have enough ridge vents.  He also stated that they were only roofers and did not do gutter guards (someone else would to them).  They finished up the next day and I went up on the roof to inspect it when I came home from work.  The quality of the shingle roofing job was very good with clean lines.  However, there were a couple of issues.  They did not extend the ridge vents out to within 1-2 feet from the roof edge as was stated on the contract (the old ridge vents came to about 4 feet from the edge), and they used two different types of ridge vents that did not look right together on the roof.  They also reinstalled the old gutter guards!  The old gutter guards extend up under the lower shingle.  I called and complained and I was told to send them pictures, which I did.  After a couple of weeks elapsed, I came home and discovered that they had changed the ridge vents to one type, but did not extend them.  After a few more days, I came home and found a few piles of roof shingle pebbles on my driveway and front courtyard area.  In looking up at the roof, I found that there were several instances of shingles turned up on the bottom row above the gutters like someone lifted them up (I did not go up on the roof).  I called Rich Roofing to complain, and the person said that he would check into it immediately and get back with me to tell me who was there and why.  I never heard another word until their office called in mid-July, 2012 and was checking to see if everything was ok with the job (gave the impression that their work was done).  At this point, I found out that the piles of shingle pebbles were left when another subcontractor hired by Rich Roofing replaced my gutters.  This was NOT a part of the contract; gutter GUARDS were! A couple of days later, the gutter subcontractor came out and put in new gutter guards.  The new gutter guards were the aluminum snap-in kind that replaced the old ones which had extensions that slipped under the bottom row of shingles.  After I came home from work, I went up on the roof and noticed there were 3 torn shingles on the bottom row and 2 areas where shingles were pulled up severely.  I called Rich Roofing to complain again.  By this time, a new person had taken over my account (the third one since I hired this company).  He said that he would send the gutter subcontractor out to clear it up.  I met him within a day or two and he said that the tears were due to the fact that the roofers had nailed down the old gutter guard extensions up under the roof and that they had to lift up the shingles to remove the nails so that they could remove the old gutter guards.  So, at this point, in late July (roof originally installed in April), I had torn and displaced shingles due to removing the old gutter guards that should NOT have been put back on in the first place by the roofers, I had ridge vents that were not extended as agreed upon, and I had new gutters that were not even part of the original contract.  The new person stated that he would take care of it.  Several weeks went by and I heard nothing from Rich Roofing until one day I received an invoice for final payment due.  I called Rich Roofing to complain.  They said that this was part of their normal procedure when they receive final adjustments from the insurance company.  By this time, they had a new person (project manager) to follow my claim.  They said that they would have someone followup on fixing my problems.  After a few more weeks, they brought out their fixit guy who extended the ridge vents closer to the roof edge per original agreement and he also fixed the torn shingles (after two trips since he missed one on the first trip).  The quality of the work by the fixit person was top notch and he was VERY responsive and helpful.  The work was finally finished in mid October.  Overall, this is has not been a good experience, and I cannot in good conscience recommend Rich Roofing to my family or friends.  With that said, however, I believe that Rich Roofing has learned a lot from my episode with them and from the many, many other people who had experiences like mine from Rich Roofing (based on several conversations with the personnel in the office).  They unfortunately grew too fast and took on too much from the May, 2011 hailstorm, and were not ready for the consequences.  I do not believe that they had much experience in handling large scale insurance claims before this and were certainly not prepared for the enormous amount of business they received when they very actively pursued insurance claims.  From my experience, all of their workers for roof jobs are subcontracted out.  This is not ideal, but could work ok if done properly.  Unfortunately, Rich Roofing did not handle it well with very poor coordination with and communication among all of its subcontractors.  They also did not have a good system for assuring things did not slip through the cracks as people came and went (there was much turnover in the office for project managers based on my experience).   Hopefully, they have learned from their many mistakes and have put processes and procedures in place that will not allow something like my situation (and many more like mine) to occur ever again.

From the day I signed a contract with them to the final day of the work, they kept me informed, promptly returned calls and ensured my total satisfaction throughout the entire process. They replaced the roof in early December but had to wait until this past Spring to do the painting and other work.  They were there when they said they would be and the contractors they hired to paint and do the deck did great job. The Rich Roofing project manager kept track of all his subs and ensured I was completely satisfied with their work before the final bill was paid.  The most noteworthy part was this excellent service was provided during their busiest time since this area suffered a great deal of hail damage.  All of their personnel were courteous and careful of my property.

Sales Rep. worked directly with our Insurance Company/Adjuster. Actual work performed in one day. Old singles and paper stripped and replaced using 6 fastners instead of 4. 4 is Rich Roofing standard but we requested 6 per single per Mfg's recommendation (Internet site). Workers cleaned up and did a great job. Reason for the couple of B ratings was the slow reponse of the Sales Rep. on paper work needed for final payment from Insurance Co. Out of pocket money was insurance deductable.
Response from Rich Roofing
"We are pleased to hear you had a good experience with our company. We would like to note that we storm nail all shingles, which includes 6 nails per shingle. 4 nails would be acceptable for a 3 tab roof, however Rich Roofing standards are in fact 6. All of our installs meet the manufacture specs, which allows us to maintain certifications for the products we install. Thanks you for your business!"

Not going into great detail, it would take to long.  Summary:  No foreman on job to oversee workers (I had to call company to get new skylight sent for job), only one worker spoke a little English, put sun tunnel in wrong spot even though we drilled hole through roof and marked spot with metal rod, flashing job on chimney looked horrible, gutter guards were put in up- side down even though I showed them how they were to be installed (on guards it was written in English "this side up"), when called office to get all this fixed, there seemed to be a big turn-over of employees and communication was sometimes difficult.  After about four months, most things were fixed, but I was wishing that I had gone with someone else.
This work was done as a result of the hail damage last year and I know that everyone of very busy, BUT, they shouldn't have taken on more work then they could handle.  It was kind of a nightmare, and not at all professional.

We were very pleased with Rich Roofing and would definitely use them again.  They replaced our entire roof and replaced our screens.  The company that they used to do our screens did a terrible job.  They are still working with us to get those fixed.  They returned our calls and were very attentive to anything that we called them about.  They did have to re-do a few things and they were great about getting it done.  Everyone in the company itself and in the people they hired to do the various work, were friendly and professional.

The initial contact with the salesman was very good - he was friendly, informative and pleasant and not pushy. He inspected and said the hail and wind damage was moderate and that it was a valid insurance claim. We called our adjustor, who came out and agreed. Rich Roofing offered to deal with our insurance for us, acting in our interest. I was a bit skeptical about doing that but we had heard radio announcements about the company and the BBB listed them as A+  I also liked the idea of dealing with a local, long term reputable company who used local employees who were background checked. The salesman assured us that all the employees had been with Rich Roofing for at least ten years. He assured us that he would be available for questions from start to finish so that we would receive quality work and good communication. That is what ultimately sold me...We agreed to use them and signed the contract. I later learned that the original Rich Roofing of Troy, Ohio was bought out last year right after the big Kettering hail and wind storm. I learned this by researching on the Ohio State website. This is fine but I think it is misleading to advertise as a local company in business for decades. I still don't know for sure who owns and runs the company and where they are located. My first complaint is that the  salesman only provided a folder with small samples of one brand of shingles and I said I really wanted full size shingles or to see actual houses so I could choose a color. This was a major change to our home and I wanted to love the way it worked. The salesman gave us addresses of local homes so we could see sample and choose wisely. My husband and I spent several afternoons driving all over Dayton and Beavercreek to see what the colors looked like. In retrospect I guess we could have also driven out to HomeDepot or elsewhere to see shingle samples but I had just assumed the salesman would bring these. He told us a project manager would call us the following Monday to set up a day. The following Friday we had not heard back so called the company. They told us the project manager was gone all week and so assigned us to someone else - we called the next manager and he scheduled us for the very next Monday. The crew arrived 7am as promised and went right to work. They put tarps all around the house to collect the old roof and cleaned up very well. The roof was laid quickly - since there were about 8-10 men working at any given time. One problem arose concerning the "drip edge". There was no clear foreman or supervisor and all of the men spoke mostly Spanish so communicating was very difficult. We could not understand what the "problem" was until they were nearly done as we watched and waited. They had removed the top portion of our siding that runs along the eaves. Dripedge? The new product provided did not cover our wood so they left it exposed. A roofer told us this was siding and not roofing. So why was it removed at all? He said the wood was also a dripedge. We tried to discuss this with them, unhappy with old wood showing. Communication was frustrating and they told us we had to call the company if we wanted something different. We made repeated calls to the company and project manager throughout the afternoon but nobody returned the calls. Apparently the crew was able to contact him because finally at about 5pm someone brought out some new wider edging and installed it after the roof was complete - and I believe this edge should have been the first step. The crew had to pull back the brand new shingles and tack down this edge - which now hangs farther out and not flush to the side of the house - because there is an old wooden "drip edge" underneath. We later learned that this wood could have been removed but since the product they had delivered (the narrow strip) would not cover it all they opted to leave the wood there. Leaving it this way may have been functional but the exposed wood would require us to repair and repaint it. We put siding on the house several years ago to protect the wood and avoid painting! If we had this explained to us before they started we would have insisted on  a wider edge right away. Later that evening, the project manager arrived and apologized for not being available. He inspected the work and the edge they applied and said it would be fine. He said that it would not damage the new roof by installing it after the fact. I don't like the drip edge that sticks like that out but it is done. So, the biggest complaint I have is with the communication and lack of a visable supervisor or leader. As for the roof it does look very nice and the cleanup was excellent. The crew seemed very nice, worked hard and finished quickly. My impression is that Rich Roofing is a very large regional company, probably a merger of multiple companies with many project managers, many crews and resulting bad communication. Nothing wrong with that but I don't like being mislead and run around. As a consumer, I want to know the correct facts ahead of time.

All in all, the process was rather frustrating because of so many different levels of management to deal with and not really knowing who does what job - sales, project manager, crew managers, administration,  and crew.. But I do think the roof looks very nice and am happy with it for the most part. Looking back, I wish I would have used a much smaller and truly local company. That is normally how we hire for services - word of mouth and always local people. Rich Roofing was not small or local but rather a large regional contractor. I wish I would have sought multiple bidders but them offering to deal with insuance and even showing up when my insurance adjustor arrived seemed like a good idea but I would not do it that way again. It made me feel like I really should let them do the work for their effort...Higher price and convenience does not necessarily mean better quality and service. I would have preferred to have at least a few of the crew members speaking better English. I do not think I would use them again.

"[Removed member name], I just wanted to respond to your review since you included concern about the size and ownership of our company. We are in fact a small, family owned company that is located in Troy, Ohio. We have been in business for almost 50 years now. The business name is Rich and Sons, Inc and we do business as Rich Roofing, which helps denote the type of work we specialize in. Rich and Sons, includes Eric Rich Sr. and his two sons Eric and Wes. After the big hailstorm, the amount of employees did increase in order to handle the large amount of damaged homes. However, at no time was the company bought out, nor did it merge with any other companies. We are grateful that you chose us to install your roof and are sorry to hear that you have any dissatisfaction. We hold ourselves to a high standard and do our best to let our customers see that. If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to contact our office. In regards to your research on the state website, we will investigate any issues with additional use of our name. Thank you for taking the time to review."

We had multiple problems with Rich Roofing from the beginning (including nobody called us back with the price of the first estimate which they lost and had to come out twice to measure and give an estimate).  We wanted a good quality roof job and were willing to pay a little more for a high quality job, but that was not the case.  Overall the roofing job was ok except for poorly installed drip edge and ice guard.  The ice guard material doesn't come all the way down in places and the drip edge is cockeyed and doesn't even meet in other places (it's supposed to overlap a little bit).
After multiple phone calls and no-shows to check out the problem, a man came out and admitted it was poor quality installation and they would repair it.  Nothing happened.  After more phone calls and more no-shows, a supervisor came out and also said they would take care of it and they would get back to us.  Again, nothing happened.  No phone calls or follow ups.
They will tell you they've corrected the problem, people have been let go and things are resolved, but don't expect any service after installation.  It still makes me a little angry everytime I hear their ads on the radio, but we've given up on getting the problem resolved and if we have any leaks, etc., we'll probably call another company to fix the problem rather than deal with the warranty.
Please be advised...if you are expecting a high-quality roof or high-quality service because Rich Roofing's price is higher than most, you will be wasting your money.  Choose another company with a good rating here on Angie's list and save yourself several thousand dollars and a lot of headaches.
