Cary came and gave me a reasonable estimate and some good advice. He said he didn't really think I needed the whole main replaced or at least could not say one way or the other. I insisted that I wanted a new valve and wanted the assurance that I had good pipes on the main (cause my old valve was in very bad shape and I had no idea how old the main was). So we went ahead and did the work.

Cary discovered the main was only 3 feet deep and should have been 4 feet. So he dug deeper and installed the main at the proper depth with new fittings. He had to drill a new hole in the basement wall, lower down to accommodate the lower pipe depth, so he did that and patched the old hole with cement inside and out.  He installed a good quality ball valve for the main shut off. 
All work was done very expediently and in a professional manner. 

The final price was below his estimate and was 1/2 the price quoted to me by another plumber. This price did not include repacking the dirt into the ditch but he did pile it all back up nicely and give me instructions on how to manage it as it settled back into the ditch on its own -- which it mostly did after a few good rains.  I expect it will all be flat again pretty soon. 

I was very happy with the work that he did and the speed at which he worked me into his schedule. It was a pleasure working with him.  I would definitely hire him again for other plumbing related work. 

We have used Cary for several years. Unlike others in the area, you get Cary, the owner, he knows your home and so you never have to explain where this and that is etc. His prices are fair and now that I am a widow I know that he will continue to be fair and honest and not take advantage as some would do in my situation.
