SylvaniaVET
About us
Voted Best Vet 2007 &2008 & 2009 & 2010 & 2011, 2012 American Animal Hospital Association Inspected and Certified In 1974, ready to start his own practice, Dr. Robert Esplin returned to his home town to start Sylvania Veterinary Hospital. From the beginning his plan was to offer a special brand of veterinary care that included a 100% commitment to be there for his clients and patients. The modern, 16,000 square foot SylvaniaVET is the culmination of this commitment. We are bigger now but our commitment to quality, compassion, thorough patient care, and customer service remains the same more than 35 years later. In 1978 SylvaniaVET became an inspected and certified member of the American Animal Hospital Association. Regular inspections by AAHA confirmed that our hospital met or exceeded the highest standards of the profession. Until well into the 21st century SylvaniaVET was the only area practice that was ever inspected for meeting even the most minimal standards of pet care. Even in 2010 there are only two other practices that chose to meet AAHA standards. We are proud of our long standing commitment to high quality care. SylvaniaVET is not the average neighborhood practice, but a pet care destination. Our goal is to provide all the services a pet owner might need for their pet. Our building was designed with the comfort and safety of our patients in mind. In addition to all standard veterinary services SylvaniaVET offers boarding, grooming, doggy day care, obedience classes, physical rehabilitation and hydrotherapy, a well stocked retail space and many more services too numerous to mention. We are constantly looking at new treatment methods, new equipment and new services we might offer. Our 24/7 commitment is unique to this region. No other general practice has staffing ‘round the clock seven days a week which enables us to answer the phones whenever you call. No other general practice answers their phones ‘round the clock. One of our highly trained technicians and an assistant is always in the building providing care to our patients and boarding guests. One of our doctors is always on call and will come in when necessary to provide emergency after hours care. It is reassuring to know that in an emergency your doctor knows your pet and its medical history, and lab work and x-rays are here for review if necessary. Another special and unique feature of SylvaniaVET care is our policy of 24/7 visitation of hospitalized pets. SylvaniaVET has been voted, by readers of the Toledo City Paper, BEST VET for five consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011). We are proud of this honor and constantly strive to do better and earn the next award. We could go on and on about what makes SylvaniaVET special, but the best way to learn is to come visit us for a tour or make your first appointment. Mission Statement - The mission of the Sylvania Veterinary Hospital is a commitment to superior care, education and service to our patients, clients and staff. We are our patients’ healthcare advocate.

"Thank u [member name removed] for your great reviews. we appriciate your grades. Dr Bob"
Our experience with SylvaniaVET began when we adopted our rescue Golden Retriever through Golden Retriever Rescue Resource. SylvaniaVET had been used by them to clean our boy up so we just continued to use them. Until now our experience with SylvaniaVET has been expensive but fine. We saw them as a first class operation. This recent experience made us wonder about that.
Dr. Nicole was helpful and prompt in taking care of his surgery. Our experience went downhill when our boy was delivered back to us. His hind quarters were flecked with feces and a three to four inch complete chunk of feces was stuck in his tail. We cleaned him up as best we could before putting him in the car while the tech who brought him to us watched. When we got him home we found dried blood in his fur near the surgical area and something, we don't know what, on his chin and chest. All in all our boy was dirtier when we picked him up from his surgery than when we dropped him off. Obviously a post-op or pre-delivery inspection was not done. This was not a pleasant experience and not what we expected from SylvaniaVET!
"(member name removed), this is the first I have seen your post. You are wrong that we have made no effort to bring in a doctor that is interested in exotics. Every time we interview that is an item that is on our list. It is not easy to attract potential doctors to NW Ohio, just ask other professionals. It is not enough to have one doctor that is interested in exotics as they cannot be available 24/7, so we need at least two. Right now we have one that has exotic experience and is willing but we cannot open this area back up until we have another. Stay tuned as we are in the interview process. As far as turnover this happens in all business with multiple employees for a variety of reasons. Right now we have a staff that is humming and doing a great job providing care to our patients. We are still the only AAHA inspected and certified 24/7 practice in NW Ohio."
"[Member Name], I am not familiar with why you were kept waiting for such a long time. Now that I am aware I will investigate and will get back to you. Keeping on time with our appointments is a high priority for us and we are working to make it happen every day. In your case this obviously didn't happen and I will find out why. In the future, please feel free to contact me directly , Dr.Bob, or my office manager, Stefani, when you have an issue."
They are slightly more expensive than other places around, but it is well worth the extra cost. They have several vets on staff and are available 24/7 for other needs/concerns. Every time I've needed to make an appointment, I can usually get in the next day.
One of my cats is particularly difficult when she has an appointment. Dr Natalie and her staff are always so patient and willing to think outside the box to get her whatever she needs. I am very happy with SylvaniaVET and would highly recommend them to anyone with pets!
We decided to never go back and went to a different vet a few blocks over. They explained that it was a serious skin condition: our JRT had a fungal infection and had to get tested (meds and procedure cost us well over $400!) Our JRT had to wear a cone, had to take 4 pills every day as well as every other day over a span of a month.
"Dear [Member name removed], I do not check Angie's list often and your post slipped through the cracks and I apologise for the lack of a timely response. When I tried to look you up in our data base I could not find you listed as a client. Could you have registered under another name? I am concerned when even one client has a negative experience as our policies and training are designed to make each visit and contact a positive one. When we fall short we appreciate knowing so that we can use our shortcomings to improve. I know that it has been over a year since your experience and understand if you do not want to discuss the problem further. However, if you are willing I would be very happy to hear from you. Please feel free to call me at 419-885-4421. I am usually there mon-thurs 7:45-5. I sincerely hope to hear from you so I can get a better understanding how we failed to meet your expectations."
One time I went in there, and waited for 1.5 hours in the exam room before they came into see my pet. It usually is a long wait, but that was even worse than usual.
The worst was when my pet had a growth on her leg. I took her in and they told me that they did not know what it was, but that it had to be surgically removed. They were going to charge me upwards of $1000. I sought out another vet, who gave my pet a shot... The growth disappeared in a few days.
I do believe that the staff is very nice and helpful, but I also feel that they are out to make money in any way that they can. The services are way over priced, and they do not seem to be very knowledgeable.
