We absolutely loved our experience with R. A. Kalfas. We had never engaged a contractor for work like this before and the entire team made us feel at ease and kept us apprised at every turn. The estimate process was low pressure, informative, and efficient. Chris made great suggestions but also listened to our needs...and our constraints. Its the only bathroom in our home...we needed assurances that we could minimize the impact of the essentials during the work...and they did! The suppliers they had us work with to select our fixtures, materials were also very good-- helpful in terms of design choices and in our opinion a good value as well. Demo day arrived and they jumped right in....had the room down to the studs, old tub removed, our 50's era console sink stored safely, and they re-seated the toilet to make sure we could use it...cleaned up and secured all in one day. Each day Chris would contact us to let us know what to expect today...and how the next few days were shaping up schedule wise. Anytime we had questions, they were addressed quickly. They transformed our 50's era bathroom with pink and white tiles to a fresh, bright new bathroom we're very comfortable in and proud to show off. We would highly recommend Kalfas for your remodeling needs and we'll use them again in the future. They are skilled at what they do but they are also great people.

The remodel went great! We went to the home and garden show in Cleveland earlier in the year and gave our information to multiple companies, 4 or 5 I believe. Not a single one made ANY attempt to follow up with us. My father-in-law suggested Kalfas as they were a local company. I emailed them, and within a couple of hours they called to set up a meeting. Right away my wife and I were very impressed with the professionalism and the responsiveness. After the meeting we both decided that they were a great choice and decided to hire them. It took a little bit of time to get all of the supplies in, but that was a good thing. We would much rather wait until all the parts are in vs tearing out the bathroom and waiting for parts. Once the demo started the process moved VERY quickly. Everyday we would come home from work we were both amazed with how much was done in a day. They also treat your house like their own. Our project was occurring during Thanksgiving and we were hosting Thanksgiving dinner. We both just told ourselves that the house will be a mess since it was a "construction zone" but they cleaned up every day. He even went out and scrubbed the dirt and debris off of our front porch! In the end we were both very impressed with the work and we are already planning on hiring them again next year for another project.

The trades persons Kalfas assigned were excellent, particularly Jim the carpenter and Mike the painter. Both were meticulous in their attention to detail and the quality of workmanship. Jim laid plastic and dropcloths on our floors to avoid getting them dirty. He and Mike were fastidious about cleaning up well each day. Mike was possibly the best painter ever to work in our home.
Bruce the supervisor also did a good job, visiting the site regularly. He was very communicative about near-term plans and extremely responsive to our requests, including addressing all of our punch list items prior to final acceptance. He provided his cell phone number and made numerous runs to suppliers to ensure materials were delivered when Jim and Mike needed them.
The Kalfas designer was a major disappointment. She was consistently late for appointments and fell short of delivering the Kalfas promise. As an example, we did not receive all of the information that was promised (e.g., final drawings or details of plumbing fixtures). The wrong faucets were installed in our master bath and we had to go to the supplier on our own to rectify the problem. It turns out the faucets were in will-call and never picked up until after we visited.
Our biggest disappointment with the Kalfas team was communication that fell short of the mark. Both my wife and I work, so we had to plan days off or days to work from home. Sometimes the Kalfas team showed up, other times they didn't let us know they weren't coming. They did not inform us of the start date for the first job in advance (we just had a couple of days' notice), so we had to do scrambling so one of us was home on the day they arrived.
The contracts were signed in April, demolition began in July (3 mos. lag time) and the job was completed in Oct. (6 mos. from contract). The end result, which matters most, is that our bathrooms look beautiful. The outcome is excellent. If we had one thing to change, it would be communication with the Kalfas staff, especially the designer.

We were very pleased with the project and with Kalfas Home improvement. The quote was prepared quickly and in a professional manner. Once all the required materials were picked out by us and were received the work was started soon afterwards and the project was worked on 5 to 6 days a week until all planned work was completed. The workmanship of the tile work was outstanding as was everything associated with the remodeling. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. All agreed upon work was completed on time and due to some changes we made, cost less than the orginal quote.

The work went fine. We have used Kalfas a few times in the past. They arrived on time and set down drop cloths so he didn't track snow throughout the house. They are very easy to schedule with.

"This bathroom was completed and useable, however, the customer had issues with the tile she selected and with the proper way we completed the installation of the products. We installed the tile as per her selection, but she claims it was the wrong color. Everything matched up; the name, style, and even the skew number on the tile. She also wanted us to install products improperly which we refused to do. We are sorry she was dissatisfied with her bathroom but we made every effort to satisfy her going above and beyond. She even called the Better Business Bureau which we met with and their report states customer will remain dissatisfied but contractor has made every effort."

Used Kalfas twice. several years ago to build a screened in porch and this year for some roofing repair around our chimney. The porch was about $27,000 and the roof repair about $600. Both experiences were excellent. You will not find Kalfas the least expensive provider but you can count on them to do the work exactly on their estimate, to fix anything that is not completed to your satisfaction, to come very close on complex jobs to on time completion. They seem like a very honest company that will not suggest work that doesn't need completed. I will always get an estimate from them for work I believe they can complete.

The work took about a week and a half longer than the seven weeks they had projected. Since many different workers were involved, there were a few down days when the next worker(s) was tied up on another project. However, all the workers were professional and friendly. In the twelve years my wife and I have lived where we are now, we have had many different contractors do work for us. This experience was by far the best.

Made the job look fairly good but left hidden rotten wood. Not sure how long it will last. Reaching up under the repaired area is rotten plywood. They forgot to caulk... had to call. Forgot to replace some of the wood specified in the contract... had to call. They spent only one day with the carpentry and 1 day painting. Not much new materials. Looks decent -- gave up .

"THE PROJECT WAS BID THAT THE WOOD WOULD BE INSPECTED AFTER THE STUCCO WAS REMOVED. WE DID REPLACE ALL THE DAMAGED WOOD. THE CAULKING IS ALWAYS DONE AFTER THE PAINTING. WE DO NOT CAULK BEFORE PAINT ON THE OUTSIDE BECAUSE THE PAINT WILL DRY OUT THE CAULK MUCH QUICKER, WE ALWAYS GO BACK AND CAULK ON EXTERIOR."

I am very happy with the work that they did. It cost me a lot of money but I felt that it average considering the size of the job. The owner was a general contractor. Most of the work was done by the subcontractors and they all did great. I would use their services again depending on the job.

I had an excellent experience working with Kalfas. Everything was just fine until about three weeks following the installation when we had a storm and the skylight began to leak. I called the company late on a Friday night and within an hour they had sent someone out to put a tarpaulin over the top of it. They came back about a week later to do the repair. They found out that the repair was not with the skylight, but it was in the ridge next to the skylight. They put in some insulation and he told me that should fix the problem. They are a little more expensive than some of the other companies.

Our experience with them went very well. They were responsive and Bob Kalfas comes to the hours and we have known him for a long time and trust his work.
