Hook Home Maintenance

There are plenty of competent contractors, Hook Home Maintenance is not one of them. When I hired Hook Home Maintenance they told me the project would take three weeks at a cost of $41.5 k. It took 13 weeks (with Lindsay telling me “2 more weeks” starting at week six), and the final bill was $75.9 k (YES, that is an increase of 83%). The majority of the overage being unexplained labor -materials were over by $7.1 k, labor was over by $27.3 k. The project was not only grossly underestimated, but the additional 10 weeks cost listing the house during a seller’s market that was busiest when the house was supposed to be complete. Since completion was in mid-May instead of the beginning of March, additional funds were necessary to paint the outside of the house, which was never part of the original project (No, I did not have Hook paint the outside). Hook’s incompetency cost me addition money in many areas. Upon inspection of Hook’s work… • The kitchen rendering that was provided did not match what was installed • There was damage to the kitchen cabinets when they were installed • The new toilet in the upstairs bath was not functioning • Shelves were missing from the kitchen pantry and laundry room and were not in the house • Pre-painted trim was cut and raw wood was left exposed • Prep work prior to painting (filling holes and dents) was not done and there was paint on the new hardwood floors, the fireplace stone, etc. (Ironically, the estimate to paint was the only cost that Randy advised me was over budget and after asking how much it was going to be over, I never received a revised estimate, just an invoice.) • The wood counter tops in the kitchen were a different wood than the laundry room counter tops • I was charged for six (6) hours of cleaning that was done two weeks prior to Hook completing the project. Additional funds were used for a final cleaning. Overages and expenditures as the project was under way were not conveyed and when specifically asked about costs and time lines, updated cost estimates were not provided and updated time estimates were inaccurate. The amount of money allocated for this project was clearly communicated at the beginning of the project and Shawn assured that he thought there would be savings in some of the discounts provided by Lowes for materials. An opportunity to control costs was not provided as Hook Home Maintenance continued to send invoices with unexplained labor costs. The majority of Hook’s work was acceptable, but not worth the overage in cost, time and aggravation. There are plenty of competent contractors out there. Hook Home Maintenance is not one of them.

Did a good job and were great to deal with. I will use them again for some upcoming jobs in the spring.

Two men show up, each took separate jobs and in a short time completed all tasks, cleaned up and when they left everything was perfect. Not often, especially in Ohio, a company is so detail oriented and hires such good people. Highly recommend.

The did a fairly good job. The responsiveness was a little spotty, but not outrageous. The drywall was well done, although there was dust everywhere afterwards. The painting was decent, although the edging could have been a little better.

The fence is great, the cornice they fixed is great. The sealing around the chimney seems to be okay, but the sealing around the skylight is worse than it was before. It didn't leak all summer, but I just noticed a couple nights ago that the skylight was leaking. The ceiling is stained all around the skylight much more than it was before.

Everything went well. Randy always had suggestions and improvements to my ideas and his crew has been incredibly knowledgable. They're kind to my pets and to the many questions my son has. I will use them again.

Response time was excellent. Andrew was very courteous and knowledgeable about the job. He completed the job in under an hour, including thorough clean-up. The fan works great and we have given them a list of more jobs. Very satisfied!

They were very professional and did a wonderful job, they cleaned up after themselves and worked diligently. They finished up what I had requested and asked if I needed anything else and actually repaired by sink in the bathroom. I would hire them again.

I recently purchased a refrigerator that was just a hair too wide for the opening in my kitchen.  Shawn and Jim came to my house, and cut off about 1/8" of my laminate countertop to get the fridge to fit.  After Jim cut it off (without any laminate chipping!), we discovered that the kitchen cabinet was actually a problem, too.  Shawn cut back just enough of the decorative lip on the cabinet, and the fridge finally fit! 

My biggest fear prior to the work being done was that you'd be able to tell that alterations were made.  Looking at the countertop and at the cabinet though, you can't even tell that anything was done (and that's a good thing).

Admittedly poor measuring on my part, but great quality and responsiveness from Hook Home Maintenance.  I would definitely have them back if needed for any other surprise issue.

Wonderful!  The job was not an appealing one--finishing up half-done work, much of which had been done by amateurs. Randy took a look around and was very positive, unlike 2 other contractors I interviewed.  His bid came in just above the middle of the 4 bids I received, so I went with them.  We scheduled the work to start right away.

Randy's son, Shawn, was the supervisor on my job.  I was impressed at how quickly he and his crew got to work each day and how much they were able to get done.  It was great to come home every day and see so much progress.  I could tell that the schedule was very well planned, so no one was sitting around, not doing anything--the workflow was very smooth and efficient with no wasted man-hours.

Shawn was also great helping me make decisions--instead of just asking "what do you want to do about this?" he'd give me a few options and then rate them by expense, durability, aethestics, etc.  He made it very easy to make the right choices. 

He also told me well ahead of time what the order of the work would be, so I could order and pick up materials, and he was great about having me shop for some things while he picked up others.

Every crew member he brought was professional and made me feel comfortable about having them in my home.  The crew members all seemed to get along well--I heard no rudeness or arguing, just nice conversation and a lot of talk about the work going on.

Since I work fulltime, they were often there when I wasn't,  and I never felt concern about that or had any problems.  They'd clean up well after each day and leave the house locked up and the dog safely inside.

The communication was great too--Shawn would text me during the day if there were questions and if I texted him, I'd get an almost instant response.  Randy came over about halfway through the job to walk through things and then just before the job wrapped up, so I felt like my project got a lot of attention and everyone was on the same page about how it was going.

All the work was done very well--the electric, drywall hanging and finishing, installing closet doors, installing hardwood flooring, installing laminate flooring, and finishing the hardwood flooring.  They even noticed that my sink was leaking and did a little plumbing for me!  Everything works and looks great, especially the hardwood floors.

They also came in just about at their estimate for the amount of time it would take and labor costs.

So all in all, Hook did a great job.  I plan to have them back to do more work for me in the future, and I've already been recommending them to other people.

Was prompt on returning my call, arrived on time, did a good job on door install. Cleaned up, hauled away old door and debris. I would definitely use this company again. very satisfied.  The only criticism is that the caulking used around the door should have been color matched instead of white, I had color match on the old door and it looked much better.

I had only one interaction with Milan. It was a fairly simple (low cost) need. He dealt with it cautiously and as though it was an important commission. I was pleased and will return should I want or need other locksmith services. I noted that he had a number of mailbox (as for apartment mailboxex) in stock

Everything went fine, no problems.  My husband actually handled everything.

They were just very efficient and very good. There were two people that did that. They were very prompt, very clean and very personable. Overall they were excellent. Their price was also excellent. I would absolutely use them again in the future.

I was contacted today by Hook Home Maintenance. The owner said he did not get my messages, and offered to look for a replacement part. I appreciate him trying to fix this older window. Not sure the reason for the miscommunication, but was glad to receive a phone call from Randy.
