When Rick arrived, he explained the work necessary to fix the leak. I really wanted more flexibility as well as a cleanup in the appearance and operation of the shutoffs so I asked for a quote on a much more complex repair and upgrade which included shutoffs for each fixture or branch of fixtures. I explained that I wanted a manifold with ball valves and that each line would be labeled for its corresponding shutoff. He replied that he would be using PEX. I said "that's OK if you can make it work". Little did I know that PEX can't work because it's inflexible. It can't bend around to line up all the valves in a neat row and instead each valve was installed in a completely random place rather than being neatly lined up and labeled with a tag. If this was explained to me beforehand I think we might have come to a different agreement - like using copper. It may be more expensive, but it's my choice.
The end result was completely unexpected. Rick decided that he needed to install piping for a future water softener. This piping extends a good three feet over the water heater and looks out of place. Never mind that Centerville water is already softened and I wasn't using my old softener, anyway. Rick contend this is not the case, but the Montgomery County Water FAQ page says
"Montgomery County water is softened to approximately 9 grains per gallon. Most of our customers choose not to use a water softener."
And I would agree because even when it was hooked up, our existing "junk" (as he called it) softener hardly used any salt.
For the workmanship: The PEX isn't secured to anything - and the drywall he removed to access the plumbing was replaced with a junk piece of particle board. He claims he doesn't do drywall. If you're in the services business - wouldn't you contract that part of the job out? That makes no sense to me.
I spoke with Rick after I posted this review. He ranted over the phone at me before letting me speak. I calmly told him that I didn't want to call him back to fix these things because 1) The work was specifically sold on the fact that the utmost in workmanship would be obtained. If he couldn't deliver the first time, then there's no reason he'll deliver on follow up. 2) He seemed like an angry man, seething just beneath the surface. My fears were confirmed with the follow-up call. I know better than to engage a person which is why I avoided the conflict.
So why did I hire him in the first place? He came on a recommendation from friends. However, it turns out that the people that truly have my back (and also know Rick and his work), stated they were very sorry they hadn't redirected me to another plumbing operation. I think that speaks volumes.
Sure enough, he called shortly after 8am the following day! He said he could be there between 2-4pm that day, and was there around 2:30pm. He diagnosed the problem and explained everything thoroughly. His original consensus was correct and he came the following day to fix the issue.
He was right on time and did everything in exactly the time frame as predicted. Luckily for us, the leaky pipe was an unused pipe leading to what would be a humidifier for the HVAC! I had him cut out that line and cap it off, install new shutoffs and check valve since it made sense at that point, and I had him extend a line directly outside for another water spigot for the side of the house. The job was done correctly and he was right on task! I definitely recommend his service. He was able to do it quickly, but I understand that sometimes business gets backed up, so we got lucky on that. That fact that he knew exactly what to do and performed the repair professionally is the biggest thing.
We were replacing our base cabinets in our kitchen and install new range and dishwasher. We were on a tight schedule due to vacation time and could not get other estimates to do all that was required ( plumbing and electric). We had taken out all cabinets except for built in oven and gas stove. He disconnected and we took out stove and oven. He returned and cut plywood to install new electric and left us to replace the plywood afterward. We accidently hit a new wire with a screw. I called and he ask me to tape the wire. We had to buy a kit for the dishwasher and because we had purchased a used dishwasher with hoses only needed the drain pipe. He took all the other new parts with him. We needed those shortly because the used dishwasher went bad and we purchased a new dishwasher. He took extra parts for my soap dispenser and I had to call him back to get the hose and stopper for a bottle in the cabinet. When he installed our new sink he did not put putty or silicone under the edge. He forgot the new outlet for our refrigerator and when told, seemed to install only a new plug and not new wiring (we had old plugs without ground). We have a new wood counter top and our new sink was not flush to it and the clips that came with it did not work with the thicker wood counter in the front, water is ruining the finish. We thought the price was high for the work done, but had no other choice. We would not use again.
Reply to provider response : Opening size for sink is not an excuse for not putting putty which we brought and had available at the time it was installed. We thought all sinks had putty. I do not call about problems, I just get some else to do it as I expect it to be done.
"Counter top opening was cut by home owner not responsible for fit of sink, work performed nine months ago no call received requesting work defects to be corrected/repair warranty for workmanship was provided."
