Schwendler Painting Co.

About us

I am a sole proprietor working mainly alone but able to supply help on larger jobs. I do not sub out jobs and take full responsibility for quality work and craftsmanship as well as time schedules. All estimates are free and I usually bid by the job including labor and materials in the job estimate. My estimate is always the final price except when extra work is added at the request of the customer. I aim to be prompt, friendly, knowledgable and fair and to leave the worksite clean and accessable for the duration of the job. I use only quality materials and tools. I offer a 10% discount on labor charges to Angie's List members. I have many local references to offer. I work in Portage, Summit, Stark, Geauga and Cuyahoga counties.

The positive is that the work gets done and I wasn't the one to do it and that it looks fine from a distance. That's about it. Once you get closer and actually look at the detail, you see how many corners were cut. We got multiple estimates and John lowered his quote to get the job. Having hired him before, we chose his lowered quote assuming we knew the quality of work to expect. However, he lowered the quality of his work by the same percentage that he lowered his quote. Sloppy edges with wall colors bleeding into a white ceiling, a thumbprint size spot of red paint on a white ceiling beam, paint on the brick wall, and a smear of paint from a room upstairs on the door to the garage. Some of the paint on the molding around the doors has already peeled off in large flakes, which suggests the surface was not prepped or the wrong type of paint was used. Just about every single wall needed additional coats that he did not do. I do accept some blame for not noticing this myself and bringing it to his attention, however he is the professional and as such, I relied on his expertise to recognize such a basic issue like that. This was for light and dark colored paints alike. The original mint green is still visible through the light pink color I chose for the master suite. In another room, we had a hunter green painted over an almond white wall. It looked fine when I checked it each night, but in the daylight, the whole room has uneven striping. When we questioned him, he suggested that the striping was the result of something we had done to the wall after he finished. Communication was all around problematic. When giving real time feedback as we found problems, we were met with attitude and deflection. It got to the point where we stopped giving feedback to avoid the confrontation it would inevitably cause. There was an incident where we failed to remove a 14x8 section of wallpaper under a full length window. Instead of pulling it off and prepping the wall when it was discovered, John plastered over the edges and planned to just paint over the wallpaper that was actively peeling away from the wall near the window molding. When confronted about it he claimed he didn't see it and was angry at me for damaging the plaster work he did over the edges of the wallpaper when we did peel it off for him. In the end, we were disappointed with the work he did and will not be hiring him for any potential jobs we may have in the future.
