He explained some features and terms of our life insurance policies and our pensions that helped tremendously with understanding where we could make beneficial "tweaks" , where we might want to beef up our coverage given the changes in our work status and retirement requirements..
We discussed the performance records of our 401Ks and where and why he was looking at some eventual re-balancings. Took the time to explain what he looks for in stocks and funds in that process. Also asked if we had particular areas that we thought about investing in and why they might be good or bad.
Examining our budget uncovered some ways to improve our cash flow, and postponed our purchase of a new vehicle for a few months until we could accumulate a larger down payment (we invested in car repairs, instead).
We were very satisfied with the meeting and AW is always available for questions. Also he puts out periodic notices with tips and trends to watch as well as investment newsletters and individual progress reports so we are always in the loop.
When I first met A.W., I was wary and mentioned that I had a 401K held by a previous employer. Rather than receiving the "you must transfer it all to me speech", he explained to me the advantages and disadvantages to leaving it there and to moving it out. No pressure, no gimmicks, just straight up good advise. He finished that discussion with "so if based on that you are happy where it is, then you should leave it there and if not we can discuss what you would like to do with it."
Over time, I noticed that my accounts managed by A.W., outperformed the accounts managed by me. I suppose that this is to be expected since although I consider myself reasonably savvy, I am not retired and I do not have the time to research all of the possibilities and stay on top of things. I have a retired family member that spends hours every week tracking things, but I have a family with young children and a full time job.
Based on our recurring discussions, A.W., makes investment decisions and then sends me an email indicating what is happening and why; for example, re-balancing certain things based certain conditions. We chat at least quarterly on the phone unless I have specific questions (I don't think that he has stated a preference to meeting in person or chatting on the phone as I prefer for most things), not that re-balancing occurs this often.
I send A.W. an email when I have a specific question; for example, how much money should I put into my child's college fund and how much should I keep out of the system, and what should I do with that money (and why). His answers were very enlightening. I should note that I have found A.W. extremely response. Sufficiently so that I have on more than one occasion mentioned to him that when I ask a low priority question on Sunday, I do not expect an immediate answer. He has never claimed to answer email with that level of responsiveness, but the over the years the half a dozen times I have bothered him with questions he has answered in what I considered a faster than expected time frame.
A.W. has news letters that he sends out that details a range of topics typically related to financial issues. Just today, I was rereading a paper that he published in April of 2013 related to the Health-Care Reform and, how it will affect me. These are available on his web site and you can read his newsletters without directly contacting him (highly recommended).
I highly recommend that you consider Abel Financial Strategies, he has served me well.
