The very first day of the job we had a bad rain storm when they dug the footer for the patio so things did not go well from the beginning. They installed the patio steps in the rain and were completely pitted from the rain and had mud in the concrete. I came home from work and his workers are sitting in the driveway waiting for the rain to stop drinking beer in the car on the first day of the job (very professional). It finally stops raining and the workers tell me the steps did not turn out right cause they ran out of concrete and they were completely lopsided. His workers said just tell Bob and he will be more than happy to tear out the steps and re-pour them. I called Bob to tell about the steps and the drinking on the job and he said he would take a look at the steps and let me know. Meanwhile there was NO plastic put up on my brand new home and concrete was splattered all over the patio door and siding and downspouts etc. At this point I'm furious, then Bob says he's not replacing the steps. Things continued to go wrong the rest of the job. I had told Bob if there were any questions what so ever please do not hesitate to call me. There was a lack of communication on Bob's part the entire job. Both of my overhead garage doors were splattered with concrete along with the trim and siding because they didn't take the time to mask anything off with plastic. After the job was completed I asked Bob to replace the apron at the street and patio & steps and I would pay him the balance even though I was completely dissatisfied and he refused and said he was taking me to court. I had to hire an engineer to do core samples only to find out that the concrete was 4 1/2" thick insted of 6" and he reviewed the slips from the concrete supplier only to find out it was 5 bag mix insted of class "C" with too much water content. 2 days after a section of the drive was poured it cracked all the way across and all the way through. The engineer could not understand why expansion joints were not put in up against the foundation of the house where he poured the patio. Bob cut corners everywhere he could just to get the job and now I'm stuck with a terrible job. After a 3 year legal battle only the lawyers ended up winning.
Description of Work: I hired R&L Concrete to install a new driveway, sidewalk leading up to the front porch, turnaround pad in front of the garage, and patio with footer & steps. The proposal that was agreed upon was that the concrete was to be 6" thick, class "C" 6 1/2 bag mix with fiber and 10 gauge wire mesh. Bob recommended I put in rebar also. We agreed I would put down 50% and the other 50% upon completion. The driveway was to be 300 ft. long and 12 ft. wide with a 28 ft. flare at the street. The patio was 460 sq. ft. with 3 steps. The walk was 235 sq. ft. with one step. The concrete was to have a broom finish with all the appropriate saw cuts. This was all new construction so no tear out was involved. The reason I wanted it heavy duty is because I had a 32,000 lb. propane truck coming up my drive and I wanted to be assured it wouldn't crack my expensive drive. Before hiring Bob Lewis I had gotten 8 estimates from other contractors and Bob's was middle of the road on price. I had a good feeling about hiring R&L since they were highly recommended by the BBB with a gold torch award. He assured me I would be very happy with the job so I signed a contract and the work began a week later.
