We decided at the last minute to have the carpets removed from the 1st floor because my mother-in-law was having a hard maneuvering her wheel chair on them. But we needed to have them done before she came home from rehab at the end of the week. I called The Floor Guys to see if they could work me in--fortunately for me, they had just had a cancellation, and we scheduled a start time of Thursday 9 a.m. He suggested a place where I could pick out the material I wanted installed. They had a laminate flooring in stock that almost perfectly matched my hardwood floors. Three people showed up at 9 a.m. on Thursday, right on time. They came in, worked well together, and had the job done in 2 days. It was amazing. I love it when people enjoy their work -- they came in, joked around with each other, but at the same time they were all business, they knew the jobs they each needed to do and got the work done. They cleaned up; and helped me move the heavy furniture back. They were wonderful, and I would absolutely use them again and recommend them to my friends.
We highly recommend him.
Bill allowed me to remove the old carpet and do the molding myself to help keep costs down. He came in, did a great job and was very friendly. He communicated quickly when any decisions needed made and we love our new floor!
I have another project coming up in a few weeks and absolutely will ask Bill if he can help!
work, accurately estimated the costs and managed my expectations
extremely well. He did the work in a very professional manner, it looks
great and he was very affordable.
I would recommend "The Floor Guy" (Bill) without reservation. Quality workman and nice to work with.
Bill began the work on Monday, and completed it on a Friday after working for 4 days (he notified us ahead of time that he was unavailable on Wednesday). Based on what I heard from other people who had flooring installed, he wasn't the quickest installer, but the quality was exceptional. And frankly these are floors that I plan to have in the unit for the next 20-30 years, so an extra day or two of installation seems like a very reasonable sacrifice to make in order to have them look exceptional. I was very impressed with his work product, especially around edges (doorframes, cabinets, etc).
Because it was raining much of the week he did the installation, he did a fair amount of the cutting inside. This created a lot of dust in our home, and I would have liked to see him at least spend some more time cleaning the floors once he was done. But this only drops his grade on "professionalism" from an A to a B.
Overall, the most important thing to me by far was the way the end product looks, and getting it done at a reasonable price. Things like timing & cleanup are minor and short-lived inconveniences, which I am happy to overlook based on the exceptional job he did providing us with great-looking floors.
We scheduled the work a month out. The first week was to pull out the carpet from the family room, hallway, and stairs. And then install the new hardwood. Due to work he already had scheduled, we skipped a week. The 3rd week was sanding, stain, and poly.
Experience:Bill showed up relatively on time the first day, but then left early to fix something from a previous job.The second day, again was an abbreviated work day. Essentially the entire 4 work days they might have put in 8 hours only once.
*******Mid-way through one of the days his brother started smelling like pot.******* I spoke BIll to about this, which he seemed unaware of and noted that he would have a discussion with his brother about it. It is completely unacceptable to do drugs while on the job nonetheless outside of my house in a neighborhood full of children.
At the end of the first week, Bill ask if he could come the second week (which recall from above was not a working week on my job due to another scheduled job) to work a day or two on the areas behind the stove and refrigerator. He said this would not shorten his effort the 3rd week. Being that I was already away from the office for the scheduled two weeks I declined. The third week they completed the sanding, stain and poly. As all entrances and exits to the house were being worked on and I was pregnant (needed to stay away from the fumes) we had to stay in a hotel.
Finished product: The good: The color of the stain we chose looks good. The abutting of the new and old hardwood floors looks good. We did not have them seamed together but were worried about the wear on the old hardwood showing through even after sanding. This is a non-issue and potentially the only thing they did well. The Bad:In a quick glance the finished product looks good. Upon spending a few moments the following items are very much discovered.1. There is stain all over the trim. I do mean all over. It is embarrasing to have people over. I hope that people don't notice what a mess the trim is due to the stain that is on our white trim.2. There are very bad sanding marks. The number of circular buffing marks in the floor is beyond ridiculous. 3. The are visible dust spots in the poly.4. They did not pull up the toilet as they said they would but instead worked around it. The lack of effort shows.5. Stair risers -white paint is still shows through the stain in many spots.
We discussed all of these issues with Bill. He made some excused and eventually conceded to coming back in the spring and redoing the kitchen. He reduced the amount due by $1000. Note: we did not call Bill to come back in the spring. I can't say strongly enough we never want him back in our home.
The effort extended, the quality of the work performed, and the price for what we got is absolutely unacceptable. It is hard to believe he calls himself a professional.*******DO NOT HIRE unless you want a crappy job, risk of drug use on your premises, and workers that only put in partial days.*******************
We are beyond disappointed in the work. I feel cheated. I am embarrassed by the state of our floors. The work he did is shameful. If I could prevent him from working in hardwood floors again I would :(
