I saw an ad for converting the bath tub to a shower by cutting the tub and placing a special insert where the cutout was, so you can simply step into the tub over about a 6 inch high step. This is the best alternative to spending $14,000 to have a walk in tub installed which would have required the bathroom to be torn apart and remodeled just to fit the walk in tub in. Thats a huge expense for anyone who is on a fixed income. We decided that the cutout would be the best way to get a shower without having to lift a foot over a 15 inch lip of the tub. We have a shower chair and that works well but for my better half raising her knees over the tub was very painful, since she has arthritis in her knees, and back. So I talked to Jim at Ohio Walk in Showers, and he explained the procedure about cutting the tub and installing a custom insert to allow stepping in easily. I sent a picture of the tub to Jim, so he could determine if it's steel, fiberglass, or cast iron. It turned out the tub is cast iron. Jim's son James came out to look at the tub, and showed us the inserts that they use. We decided to have the job done, and in a few days Jim, and his son came and prepared the bathroom for the work. I had everything removed from the bathroom per Jim's request because cast iron makes a mess with black powdery material, so they covered what needed covering, and put a fan in the window to move the dust and air outside, and began to cut the tub. The job took about 3 1/2 hours and they placed weights on the new insert to make sure it bonds properly and said we could use it in 24 to 48 hours. They were very professional, and cleaned the bathroom so you could not tell anything was done. We let the insert set up for 48 hours just to be sure it was ok then we were able to use the tub very easily. I firmly believe this method is the easiest, and best way for people with mobility issues who wish to step into the tub and take a shower.. Thank you Jim, and James, the job went better than we thought it would, especially for a cast iron tub.

Jim and his son were very professional. They arrived on time and wasted no time in getting started. Jim advised my wife and I what insert would be best for us. His son James started the tough job of cutting the cast iron tub. The job went well and took a little less than four hours to complete, this included the good job of cleaning up. Excellent experience from start to finish. Jim was very knowledgeable. He answered all my questions during the initial phone call. Jim and James arrived on time and finished earlier than they had estimated. They were professional and pleasant. The step-in works great and the grab bars were placed at the perfect heights and angles.

They prepared the bathroom, made sure it was well ventilated.  He said, it would take about 45 minutes to cut the tub, I have a cast iron tub.  It only took about 15 minutes to cut the tub, then they insert their step and cleaned up the bathroom.
They cleaned the tub, sink, toilet and surfaces, However, your still need to clean your whole bathroom, because the fine black dust  was still on the walls, doors, etc.

I contacted Jim a couple of week's ago by phone -- he asked for pictures of the tub.  Once he received, we talked and traded emails regarding price.  Mom's tub has a liner over it, so we didn't know if the tub was steel or cast iron.  Jim quoted a price based on the tub being cast iron and we set up a day for him to do the work.
Jim called in the morning to let us know he was on the way.  They arrived earlier than expected, and got straight to work.  He was great with my elderly Mom, and kept us informed as to progress and asked questions as needed.  It was a tricky install; Mom's bathroom is small, and the liner had to be reinforced so it won't buckle when Mom puts her weight on it.  Jim and James completed the work in about 3-1/2 hours.  They left the bathroom as clean as they found it.
This was a great experience from start to finish -- Jim is very personable, and knows how to put customers at ease.  The step-in looks great!  There's a 24-hour wait before Mom can take a shower, but I know it will make bathing a lot easier for her.  Highly recommend.

An outstanding job! Jim arrived promptly and worked 10 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. with only a short lunch break. He removed all debris and left the bathroom spotless. I would happily recommend his product to those who need an affordable, safe, shower for elderly people.

Jim arrived when he said he would. He set up very carefully to make sure that he did not make any trouble for the working area. His work was very professional and thorough. The whole installation only took 3 1/2 hr. I would definitely recomwned hia work to anyone.

Jim was extremely professional and available for all of my initial questions regarding his service. My mother was having difficulty stepping into and out of her bathtub. After researching different options, I came across Jim's website and this seemed like the perfect option for us. After contacting Jim by phone and discussing all of the details and costs, we scheduled an install date that would work best for Jim and my mother. Jim is very aware of the needs of older customers and was very courteous and respectful of my mother. I was unable to be in the house at the time of the install and had no reservations about Jim being in the house with my mother. He always had my contact information if any questions came up. He kept my mother informed of all of his actions throughout the install and his clean up after the installation was wonderful. This experience couldn't have been better. Mom was unsure about 'ruining' her bathroom but now it works better than ever.
Jim first came out to explain the process and marked off on the tub where the cut would go. We had to confirm Mom could navigate the step - but it was no problem.
The initial appointment had to be canceled due to Mom's medical emergency. We rescheduled and set the appointment that worked well for everyone. Before the work began, Jim confirmed where the cut needed to be to ensure Mom felt safe and could reach the wall/grab bars. Before the bars were installed he worked with Mom to position them at the right height/location.
Jim did a thorough cleaning of the space after he completed the work. All was completed within approximately 7 hours. There was only 2-3 hours when another bathroom in the house had to be used. The shower could be used a few days after the installation.
I was very pleased with how this went as I helped set it up but don't live in Cleveland so couldn't be there for the actual work. Jim communicated well with both me and my Mom about schedules etc.
Mom was very comfortable with Jim in the house and commented on his patience in getting the cut and bar locations just right for her. She had tears in her eyes when it was all done. Jim worried she was upset but in fact, she was happy this change allows her to stay in her home. That, is priceless.

Like many people my age, I am often challenged in trying to safely life one leg high enough to get in and out of the tub in order to shower, while trying to maintain my balance, and was in constant worry about the consequences were I to fall!

I explored a number of options and ultimately concluded that the installation of a Safeway Safety Step was the best choice for me. Searching the internet, I found and watched the instructional video provided by Safeway to teach contractors how to make the conversion, and I also found many, many stores and contractors now offering the service. While that's great for Safeway's business, I naturally thought: What about the fact that this looks to a layman like me as major surgery upon our built-in tub and shower? I hated to think of the consequences if an inexperienced handyman or a newly trained contractor were to make one false cut and wreck our entire existing installation! I felt that I wanted to have a company with considerable experience and knowledge in performing the conversation and installation.

When I found Jim's Affordable StepInShower website and studied the elaborate detail and explanations presented, and also checked our his reputation, I concluded that here was someone with not only considerable experience and knowledge about Safeway Safety Step Conversions, but also someone who has put a great deal of time and thought into learning and addressing the special safety needs of persons my age. My confidence grew even more as, at his suggestion, I exchanged measurements and photographs of our bath/shower setup with him by phone and by email, particularly when, with no sales pressure at all, he made constructive accompanying safety suggestions, for example also proposing to mount a firm grab bar for getting in and out; and he gave me a definite price with a fixed additional contingent charge only if my tub turned out to be steel or iron, which it was not.

Jim arrived on time on the agreed day, and set to work. He carefully removed the heavy existing glass doors and frame, put them into storage where we designated, eliminated nearly all evidence that they had ever been mounted on the tub, and then proceeded confidently to perform his "surgery" pausing only to call me in to make his suggestions and to get my input as to the exact location of the Safety Step on the tub, the location and height of the recommended grab bar based upon my personal height, arm length, and preferred method for getting in and out of the tub, etc. He worked carefully, cleanly and neatly as the time passed, and had the work site entirely cleaned up before he even called us in to inspect the finished job. He was glad to answer questions, and we were extremely pleased with the finished job.

I am not able to enjoy taking my showers again, getting into and out of the shower safely without having to painfully raise one leg higher than it wants to go, and having a secure grip to eliminate the worry of balancing on one leg in the process. It's a pleasure!

Got name off internet - spoke on phone and emailed pictures of tub for an estimate.  The owner was knowledgeable and extremely helpful.  We agreed on a date and time.  Called to discuss replacing shower head and adding grab bars.  All questions answered and when we couldn't find the recommended shower head (with 80" hose) he purchased it on the way over.  He arrived on time, took care not to track any dirt or construction dust in house (removed shoes many times as he went out to cut things, etc.).  Went out of his way to reinforce tub sides next to cut out to make sure it was stable and safe.  He finished in a few hours and cleaned up completely.  He did leave the trash in the shed for us to discard but that was no problem.  My brother asked if he would do a favor and look at the toilet in the back bathroom and he made a minor repair to the works without a charge.  We would highly recommend him to anyone for any type of service he offers.

I had my tub converted to a step in shower because I could no longer step over my tub to bathe or shower. The tub to shower conversion uses your existing tub and does not require removal of the tub. If you go to Affordable Step In Showers website you can see pictures of what a conversion looks like. The work done by Jim Zuber for me looks as good as the pictures on his site. He also added a grab bar to the side of my tub and one to the wall. I was able to step in to the tub and shower with no difficulty. So far there is no leakage. I could not afford to spend thousands of dollars on a remodel so this was the perfect solution for accommodating my disability. I am very pleased.
