We wanted a company to take a look at our septic system's leach field before we placed our home on the market to be sold. Marut & Sons was listed on Lake County's 'Registered Installers For Household Sewage Treatment Systems' and were also listed on Angie's List under excavating. I called Marut & Sons on 6/20 and Jeff Marut promptly returned my call and suggested the cause of my problem. Within a week Jeff came to our home and corrected the system's flow problem and suggested other repairs (excavate around boxes, remove debris from boxes, adjust elbow's in boxes to regulate water flow and install risers to grade). On 6/26 I received a $65.00 invoice for the work he did on my system and a written estimate of $900.00 to do the other repairs he suggested. Note: The $65.00 invoice was reasonable, but I did not know he was charging me to come to my home to inspect the leach field. To clarify what was included in his $900.00 estimate, I contacted Marut's office on 6/30 and asked for Jeff to return my call - no response. Called office on 7/7 and asked for Jeff, left a message stating that I wanted to clarify the estimate - no response. Called Jeff's cell phone on 7/14 - message on cell was that he was on vacation until 7/21. Called Jeff's cell on 7/22 - message on cell was that he was on vacation until 7/21. Then called office on 7/22 and the woman who answered said he would call me back. He did call back later that day and left a message to call back. I returned the call when I came home. He did not answer and I left a message on his cell asking him to call back after 6pm that day - no call back. Called Jeff's cell on 7/23 and said I would be home for the next 3 hours and asked him to call back - no call back. Called Marut's office on 7/29 and left a message asking Jeff to call back after 12 noon (I was not going to be home until then). When I returned home just before noon, I had two messages. One was from Scott Marut the other from Jeff, both returned the call around 10:30am, even though my message said to call back after noon. I called Jeff's cell at 12:20pm and left a message to call back - no response. Called Jeff's cell on 7/30 and he answered. We went over the quote in which he stated the following are included in his estimate: all parts and labor; all risers to be screwed in; and Marut & Sons guarantees that said work outlined in his estimate will result in our home's septic system passing the necessary inspections required for it to be sold (provided we do not flood the system by over usage). I also asked when the work could be done, he stated he would check his calendar and call me back within a week to set a specific date. On 7/30 I sent an email to Marut confirming this discussion. On 7/31 I sent another email to Jeff stating that, in our 7/30 conversation, we did not discuss the remedies contained in his guarantee in the unlikely event of an inspection failure and I wrote suggested wording to cover that issue. Again, I mentioned that time was of the essence and that I look forward to his response within his stated timeframe of one week. It is 8/6, 9:45am and No Response. One can only speculate as to why I had such a terrible communication problem with Marut & Sons, who I truly believe is well qualified to repair the minor issues I have with my septic system. Were the communication problems caused by my desire to clarity, in writing, a loosely worded estimate or were they caused by me putting in writing the verbal guarantee I was given and its associated remedies? I do not know the answer to these questions. I suggest future potential customers request an answer from Marut & Sons.
